‘Sold’ to open Indian Film Festival on 10 July

Sold LIFFHard-hitting feature Sold will have its red carpet European Premiere at the opening of the Fifth annual London Indian Film Festival (10 – 17 July). Based on the bestselling novel Sold by Patricia McCormick, the film is a powerful drama based on real life events, and tells of a young Nepali girl’s struggle for survival after being sold into prostitution in Kolkata, and an American photographer (Gillian Anderson), who, against the odds, attempts to rescue her and other young women. The X Files and The Fall star Gillian Anderson is expected to participate in a Q&A in London at the film’s opening night amongst other talent.

Director Jeffrey D. Brown, Executive Producer Emma Thompson and Producer Jane Charles have worked tirelessly to bring this film to the screen researching every aspect of the story in depth with charities which deal directly with child trafficking in India including: Apne Aap, New Light, Sanlaap, Prajwala and in Nepal: Maiti Nepal, Shakti Samhua and Childreach International. Emma Thompson, president of the The Helen Bamber Foundation, works with survivors in London which is why she is informed on this issue and cares deeply about it.

The film is a collaboration between US and Indian production teams and includes supporting cast David Arquette (Conception) and Indian actors Seema Biswas (Bandit Queen), Parambrata Chatterjee (Apur Panchali), Tillotama Shome (Monsoon Wedding) and Susmita Mukherjee (Dostana). Debutante Niyar Saikia plays the central role of Lakshmi, the young girl from Nepal.

Now Europe’s largest platform for Asian cinema, the London Indian Film Festival returns to the Capital, celebrating Independent cinema and bringing to UK audiences a rare selection of cutting-edge films from some of India’s hottest independent talents. Going way beyond Bollywood, the festival presents a kaleidoscope of new films that challenge, shock, generate debate and present a more realistic view of India and the subcontinent today, in all its diversity.

The festival will open in the West End at the historic Cineworld Haymarket, and continue at BFI Southbank, ICA and Cineworld Cinemas around London. The festival is grant funded by the BFI Film Festival Fund.

About the screening, Executive Producer Emma Thompson comments: “It is wonderful to have our film premiered at London Indian Film Festival, to raise awareness of child-trafficking, which is an issue close to my heart and is shockingly on the increase world-wide. We hope that this film will make people think and highlight the support for key charities such as The Helen Bamber Foundation and others working in this difficult area in India, Nepal and elsewhere”

About the film, Actor Gillian Anderson states: “Working on this sensitively told film and with young women who have themselves experienced the un-believable trauma of abduction and trafficking has opened my eyes to the horrors these young people face on a daily basis as well as the often life threatening danger those working at the charities put themselves in to free these innocent victims from modern day slavery”

Cary Rajinder Sawhney, Festival Director comments: “We are delighted that the festival is growing from strength to strength and that we have Sold for our opening night. It is a film which is remarkable on many fronts not least its riveting script and direction, but also gripping performances by Indian and US actors especially lead actor Niyar Saikia who brings so much power and heartfelt pathos to the role as the resilient young girl protagonist Lakshmi”

Photos: ‘Dhoom:3’ cast meets media in Mumbai

Actors Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, Uday Chopra and Director Vijay Krishna Acharya interacted with the Mumbai media about Dhoom:3 at YRF Studios today.

Director’s Note:

Dhoom is a journey that started in 2003. A light footed caper that became a runaway hit. It is said that sequels are arguably the legitimate offspring of successful films. However, we at Yash Raj Films always felt that the reason to make the film should be its content and not just the tag of Dhoom. With this intent we brought Dhoom:2 to you in 2006. This time, the cops and robbers set up hid a love story within its folds. It had a dream run at the box office and it created a potential mine field of expectations for us. Inadvertently we had become our own biggest competitors. So here we are ready with Dhoom:3. Saying that expectations are sky high would seem like the understatement of the decade. So all we’d like to say is that we want to share this film with you and in all humility, we hope that it is an experience that pleases, surprises and awes its audience. In the cacophony of today’s world, we’d like to transport you to a time when an audience discovered a film in the theatre.

Yash Raj Films will release the film in UK cinemas on 20th December 2013.

Photos: ‘Chakravyuh’ Gala Premiere in London

The 56th BFI London Film Festival hosted the Gala Premiere of Eros International’s Chakravyuh last week on 11th October 2012.

Despite the bitterly cold weather and heavy rain, hundreds of Bollywood fans waited for hours at Empire Cinema, Leicester Square to catch a glimpse of the stars.

The Gala Premiere was attended by Arjun Rampal, Abhay Deol and director Prakash Jha.

Check out photos from the event here, courtesy of Eros International:

National award-winning director Prakakash Jha along with actors Arjun Rampal and Abhay Deol interacted with the British Asian press here yesterday ahead of the London Film Festival Gala Premiere of Eros International’s Chakravyuh.

Speaking at the press conference, Jha said: ” I try to present realistic content in my films, weave them into popular grammar and make them engaging because everyone has to see them. They have to be released in  the same cinemas where Karan Johar’s and Yash Raj’s films will release and I have to compete with them. It is a big battle for me to package my stories for a commercial audience.”

Talking about the London Film Festival premiere, Abhay Deol told BollyNewsUK: “I am excited and have never been to this festival before. It is nice to be part of a festival. I hope it reaches to a wider audience through this. I am just curious where this would lead to. I just hope it reaches the right audience.”

“This is my first UK premiere as most of my films don’t release here. Channel 4 has shown some of my films in the UK but distributors usually don’t release my films here,” added Doel whose last release here was Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara.

Commenting on the popularity of commercial cinema that is accepted by UK audiences, Prakash Jha said:” The UK audience is not growing up. They are stuck. People here still want their children to be like what they see in Bollywood films. They want the ideal daughter-in-law they see in the movies.”

“UK audiences come out a film and talk about how beautiful Rani Mukherji’s  ‘saree’ was,” said Abhay.

“People here also touch our feet much more than people back home in India,” said the Rajneeti director speaking about the traditional values that are seen in the UK diaspora.

“If films can instill that in an audience who is far way from home and want something to connect with, then it is great,” explained Arjun Rampal.

Arjun Rampal, Abhay Deol and Prakash Jha will be attending the  London Film Festival Gala Premiere of Chakravyuh at Empire Cinema, Leicester Square later today.

Aamir Khan also addressed the audience at the screening telling them what the film is about.

After a Q&A session with Aamir Khan the audience surrounded him for pictures. Also, a few people noticed that Karan Johar (My Name is Khan), who came in late was seated next to Kiran Rao. The duo of Kiran and Karan  were being mobbed by Indian Cinema fans for pictures when Johar came up to me and exchanged pleasantries, maybe to get away from the fans but had to excuse himself as many more wanted pictures with him. RA.ONE UK Premiere to be at THE O2 Cineworld

A friend of mine, who is working on its organisation and sponsoring has informed me that Shah Rukh Khan will be holding the UK Premiere of Ra.One at The O2 Cineworld Cinema.
This particular Cinema also held the Premiere for Justin Bieber’s movie and has the largest digital screen in Europe.
A source has also informed me that eleven screens will show the film on the night of the 25th October in London. Tickets will probably go on sale a week or two prior to the Premiere.
