Exclusive Sneak Peek in London: #Dilwale soundtrack

Sony Music Entertainment and Red Chillies Entertainments Pvt. Ltd. recently launched one of the most anticipated film soundtracks of the year, ‘Dilwale’ with a worldwide exclusive listening session of three tracks from the OST at the Sony Music headquarters in London. Shah Rukh Khan sent a video message for the event and music composer Pritam interacted with the UK media via video conferencing.

Dilwale will reignite the quintessential, romantic magic of the iconic Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan on-screen pairing for the first time since 2010’s worldwide hit, ‘My Name Is Khan’.

The soundtrack for ‘Dilwale’ has been composed by renowned music director Pritam, collaborating with lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya. The duo has previously come together to create hit songs for soundtracks such as ‘Cocktail’, ‘Barfi!’, ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ and ‘Dhoom 3’.

Dilwale Sneak Peek poster

‘Dilwale’ features a standout musical contribution and a wide variety of genres from key ballads to anthemic dance tracks that bring to life the truly unique and evergreen chemistry of Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan. Looking back over two decades in film, Bollywood’s favourite onscreen couple has always shared a backdrop of incredibly successful music, with classic hits from ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, ‘Baazigar’, ‘Karan Arjun’, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ and ‘My Name Is Khan’; still very much in the hearts and minds of Bollywood music lovers of all ages, all over the world. Not to forget the timeless Kajol-Shah Rukh Khan classic, ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’, which celebrates a landmark 20 years in cinema this month, making it the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema.

[tweet 661543584471076864 align=’center’]

Speaking about the launch Shah Rukh Khan through his video message said that it was a special day, as the music of a Bollywood film has never been sampled to the media in the past and that too even before the trailer has been released.

The three tracks previewed to the press at the event are titled ‘Gerua’, Manma Emotion Jaage’ and ‘Janam Janam’. The soundtrack of Dilwale will feature seven tracks in total.

Speaking to the media at the sneak peek event, Pritam said that Dilwale is a very special movie for him. “I have never worked on a full-fledged Shah Rukh Khan movie. I composed the music for Billu which featured SRK in a special appearance. Last year on his birthday, Shah Rukh told me that he was coming to me with something special. I was extremely excited as I have always wanted to work with him. Our generation has grown up idolising SRK-Kajol.”

Gerua

Veeran Tha Dil Ka Jahaan
Jis Din Tu Daachil Hua

Duniya Ko Bhula Ke
Tumse Mila Hoon
Dil Se Nikli Hai Dua
Rang De To Mohe Gerua

” ‘Gerua’ is a romantic song picturised on SRK and Kajol in Iceland. It has been sung by Arijit Singh and Antara Mitra. I actually reworked the song after I saw the picturisation and added Bulgarian folk instruments in the track. When I found out that Kajol has been cast opposite SRK in Dilwale, I couldn’t sleep for one night. Then I stopped thinking about it. Their legacy is impossible to beat. This was the first romantic song that I played to them and they approved it straight away. The words in the song mean that ‘I should become a yogi in your love and leave the world’. We went through a few voices for Gerua but Arijit suits the track and Antara brought a freshness to it,” said Pritam about the love song ‘Gerua’

Manma Emotion Jaage

Chooriya Re
Gooriya Re

Tere Jalwa Dekha Tu
Mana Main Mausam Jaage Re
Dil Jaaga Re
Manma Emotion Jaage

Talking about this dance party song, Pritam said, ” This song has been picturised on Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon in a grand way. It’s a fun track and the main hook of the song is something that Amitabh Bhattacharya came up with.”

Janam Janam

Jaane Saath Chalna Yoohin
Kasam Kasam Aa Ke Milna Yoohin

Meri Subah Ho Tun Hi Ho
Aur Shaan Bhi

Teri Baahon Main Hoon Mere Dono Jahaan
Tu Meri Aarzoo
Tu Meri Aashiqui

Janam Janam

“After SRK and Rohit Shetty narrated the script to me, this was the track I composed on the next day. They instantly liked it as well. Janam Janam is truly the theme of the movie and is played whenever SRK-Kajol meet in the film.  While the film is a typical Rohit Shetty film, it also has a love story which is very important,” said Pritam.

‘Dilwale’ is directed by Rohit Shetty, whose last collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan, ‘Chennai Express’, was a runaway, global success. The film also features the crème of Indian cinema’s new generation talent, Kriti Sanon and Varun Dhawan, alongside a seasoned supporting cast of actors like Johnny Lever, Sanjay Mishra, Vinod Khanna, Kabir Bedi, Mukesh Tiwary and Varun Sharma.

Venky Mysore – CEO, Red Chillies Entertainments Pvt. Ltd. said “Music continues to be an integral part of Indian films and that of movies featuring SRK have always been received very well world over. With the help of Sony Music this time, we wish to present every Hindi film music lover with a musical brilliance in the form of ‘Dilwale’.”

Shridhar Subramaniam – President India & Middle East, Sony Music Entertainment said, “We are committed to make Dilwale the biggest Soundtrack in the International markets by putting together one of the most aggressive and innovative marketing campaigns. The pairing of Shah Rukh Khan with Kajol has had a special place in the hearts of millions and with the addition of two young heart throbs Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon we believe that the music of Dilwale will carry forward this tradition.”

When Shraddha- Varun’s love story got too real

Varun and ShraddhaIt is a known fact that Shraddha and Varun come from a filmy family and their fathers have worked together for many years. As children, Shraddha and Varun would often be accompanied with their parents on outdoor shoots. On one such schedules at a hill station, Shraddha, being all of 8 years-old, had been nursing a crush on the mischievous child Varun. She decided to profess her love to Varun. Shraddha’s proposal, however, did not go as planned.

“I was only 8-years-old and I had a crush on him so I thought I should just tell him to his face, but as soon as I began to speak I got nervous and decided to say “I love you” backwards to him. I then told Varun that I am saying a sentence backwards, so he must listen carefully. Then I said ‘You – love – I’. But it was too complicated for a little boy to digest because he gave me a stern “NO” and just ran away from there! It’s been a joke between us ever since” laughs Shraddha.

So it was déjà vu of sorts for the actress when she had to shoot a romantic song on Mount Brute in the USA with Varun. “It was a romantic song in a beautiful mountainous location and I suddenly burst out laughing when I realized what had happened the last time I professed my love to Varun on a hill.  Varun and the unit were all wondering why I got into a sudden burst of laughter.  I reminded Varun how he had ran off the last time we were together on a hill top as kids and we both had a good laugh about it. Varun’s reaction was much better this time around though,” said Shraddha.

With stunning international locales, foot-tapping music, sizzling performances, ABCD 2 stars youth sensations Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead. The actors will be seen grooving with Prabhudheva and the ace choreographer Remo D’Souza will be directing them. The film is based on the real life struggle of a Mumbai based dance troupe who go on to win the World Hip-Hop dance championship.

Varun Dhawan trains under Prashant for his look for ABCD 2

Varun in ABCD2Varun Dhawan, who will next be seen in UK cinemas in ABCD 2, has trained hard to become lean for the film.

Varun has been trained by celebrity fitness guru Prashant who has trained Shahrukh Khan as well.

Prashant says, “When I got to know of ‘ABCD 2’ and that varun was playing  the lead, I sat down with Varun to stratergise the kind of body he wants. Remo Sir had instructed that he wanted Varun to look ripped and lean at the same time, just like a dancer’s body.”

“After Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Badlapur which required different looks, achieving the cut-edge body for ABCD 2 was a challenge but varun was very dedicated to achieve his body. We religiously worked out every single day
Varun is extremely dedicated and gives his 100%; he had to train for dance twice in the day but even after that he used to workout both before and after the shoot without fail,” added Prashant.

Speaking of managing the kind of food the actor consumed during the training, Prashant said, “His diet was also monitored by us. We initially kept him on a low carb diet  but when shooting started we put him on a high carb and protein diet and eventually we got the body we were looking for. I am happy that I could deliver what was asked of me and put up with the expectations.”

Interview: Varun Dhawan talks about ‘Badlapur’

Varun Dhawan - UK Interview - Badlapur (1) Bollywood’s chocolate hero Varun Dhawan made his Hindi film debut with Karan Johar’s last directorial Student Of The Year a few years ago in 2012. He has since starred in Main Tera Hero and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. Many may not know that Varun in fact studied at Nottingham Trent University before he joined the glamorous world of movies and was a pretty normal young lad, and to some extent still is.

The 27-year-old actor, son of prominent film-maker Dawid Dhawan (Raja  Babu, Biwi No.1, Mujhse Shaadi  Karoge), managed to charm audiences worldwide with his boyish smile and his energetic funky dance moves. Varun was also lauded for his acting skills and was the only actor from his debut film to receive a special Tweet from Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, who called his acting in the film ‘exceptional’.

It is no wonder then that the young actor is experimenting with his roles and not playing it safe by only acting in rom-coms in order to expand his fan base, which young actors tend to do.

Dhawan returns to UK cinema screens this month with the dark noir-drama Badlapur, releasing nationwide on 20th February 2015. Some may call it a risky film for the actor do to so early in his career.

Excited and nervous at the same time about his next project, the actor opened up to our Bollywood correspondent Sunny Malik and talked about the much-awaited film and much more…

How do you look back on last year?
It was amazing. I feel it has been a very long year too because it started with Main Tera Hero. It was my second film and I was really scared and nervous. Then going into a film like Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania was different. I just feel a better connection with the audience now. I just don’t want to let them down.

Varun Dhawan - UK Interview - Badlapur (2)As you made your debut with Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt in 2012, there are always comparisons with the two regarding film choices, box office collections etc. How do you deal with that?
I just find it really silly that directors, producers and actors are compared. There is no reason to compare us because we all work in a very creative field. I don’t feel it is correct to compare us to others. I am not really bothered when I am compared with someone else. I don’t take it very seriously. What I take seriously is criticism towards my work. I hear that and it inspires me to do better.

Badlapur is a risky film for you…
Many people did say that. At the end of the day, I try to hear the audiences’ voice. I signed Badlapur after my debut film Student Of The Year. After my first film released, there was a certain section of audiences that were saying that it was a children’s film and that these actors have baby faces. I was told that I sound like a child. In a way, I took that criticism and heard what the audience wants. Badlapur is not your regular Hindi film. I can guarantee you that we have filmed things that you would not have seen in Hindi cinema before. We have been true to the film and the genre. Whether the film is good or bad, the audience has to decide that. We have not held up our punches back. We’ve gone for it.

There were reports that you were depressed while you were making the film…
Yes, I was to a certain degree. I was not clinically declared depressed but I was heading there. I was to a certain degree very sad. I don’t  want to use the term ‘depression’ loosely because it is a serious illness. It definitely did affect my mental health. I was prescribed and did see a doctor for it as well. It took a toll on me. Maybe because I am young and I saw things I haven’t seen before. Maybe that is why it hit me harder than it would someone of an older age.

Varun Dhawan - UK Interview - Badlapur (5)Deepika Padukone also recently opened up about her battling depression…
At the end of the day, it’s all about your emotions. Regular people go through something like this too. But they have a perception in their head that actors are super humans. It becomes very aspirational in our country. I don’t think it should happen. They should know that we get affected as well. We do bleed when we get cut. I always say that I want my fans to see me as their friend. I openly talk about these things because I want my audiences to connect with me.

Badlapur was earlier supposed to be produced by Saif Ali Khan’s production house, Illuminati Films…
It was completely irrelevant to me because when I signed on to do the film, I signed onto Sriram Raghavan.  Dinesh  Vijan is creatively a very intelligent producer. I have got to know him better during the making of the film. I was only concerned with the fact that I want to work with Sriram Raghavan, someone I respect. I didn’t care about the other aspects.

Varun Dhawan - UK Interview - Badlapur (4)

Kissing scenes get a good share of media and audience attention. Do you believe that is why producers or directors include them in their films even if they are not needed?
I guess so. I wouldn’t deny that this doesn’t happen. I don’t actually understand what the big deal is really. Film makers give the audience what they want. I feel that it is better if one doesn’t make much noise about it whether it’s the media, the actors or the film makers. Everyone is responsible. I am not going to point out one person. If you are in love, then kissing is a natural thing.

I remember you were quite shy when doing intimate scenes for Main Tera Hero because your father was directing the film…
Main Tera Hero was different ballgame because my Dad was directing it. It was also a comedy. Whereas Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania was a love story and it was different. When it comes to Badlapur, it’s been the most comfortable. There is a very huge emotional base between Yaami Gautam and my character because we play husband-wife on-screen. That is a very pure relationship. Yaami and I also struck a chord as actors. We both were very comfortable with each other. It was a lot of fun shooting with her. However, I don’t know why it’s a big deal that I kissed Divya Dutta in the film. We did the scene as actors and professionals. I hope the audiences don’t just take away that from the film. I am sure they will not. I am confident but in a nervous way (laughs).

Varun Dhawan - UK Interview - Badlapur (7)You launched the audio track of Jee Karda almost three months before the release of the film on Bigg Boss 8.  Was it important to create awareness in advance because Badlapur is a different film?
We had just launched the audio track of Jee Karda because everyone liked the beat in the trailer. It was mainly because of demand. I hardly even danced on Bigg Boss. We didn’t really promote it or publicised it much. We released the video much later.

Dinesh Vijan, the producer of the film, is very involved in the music of his movies. What is your take on the music?
When we started the film, I told Dinesh that I hope the music is good because he is known for selecting good tracks. Dinesh told me that he will make sure that the soundtrack of Badlapur will be considered my best soundtrack yet. Jee Karda has been received really well. Atif Aslam’s Jeena is a gem. There is also a track by Arijit Singh called Judaai, which I am excited about.  I am very happy.

There are rumours that you have sung an unplugged version of Jee Karda…
(Laughs) No, No. The pictures of me in the studio were posted online and everyone thought that I was singing.  I was actually just there to hum. I was required to do that. I do sing like every other normal person. When I sing, people laugh at me (laughs).

Badlapur UK (2)You also recently filmed in Las Vegas for ABCD2, which was your first outdoor shoot in the US. How was that experience for you?
We are working with an amazing crew along with many talented dancers from India who are in the film. We have become a group, a big family actually. Las Vegas as very good. My Mom joined me and we just had a really good time.

Recent rumours suggest that you are finally doing a movie with Parineeti Chopra…
That is, unfortunately, a rumour. I am currently only working on ABCD 2. Badlapur is up for release. I will also be starting my brother Rohit Dhawan’s next directorial. That’s about it at the moment. I also don’t want to do too many films. I don’t have dates to do more films at the moment. There were some news reports that I was doing about new eight or nine films. How is that even possible? I shoot one movie at a time. At least I try that. I am coming out with two movies a year and I believe that is pretty decent.

Badlapur is released in UK cinemas on 20th February 2015.

Varun Dhawan opens up about depression

Varun DhawanBollywood actress Deepika Padukone has pledged to create awareness about depression, anxiety and mental health this year. The 29-year-old star decided to do so after experiencing the same last year and also recently spoke out in detail about battling depression and receiving treatment for it, which she says helped her get back on track.

Now young actor Varun Dhawan opened up to UK Bollywood journalist Sunny Malik about being depressed during the making of his forthcoming release, Badlapur.

When asked whether the Main Tera Hero actor was depressed while making the dark noir-drama, Dhawan said, ” I was depressed. I was not clinically declared depressed but I was heading there. I was very sad to a certain degree. I don’t want to use the term ‘depression’ loosely because it’s a serious illness. It definitely effected my mental health. I was prescribed and did see a Doctor for it as well.”

Speaking about what triggered feelings of depression in him, the actor said, “I don’t know. But maybe because I am young and I had not seen the things I got to see during the making of Badlapur. I think, that is why it hit me harder than it would affect a person older than me.”

Varun also said that people have a perception that these things don’t happen to stars. “They should know that we are also normal people.”

Varun Dhawan will next be seen in Badlapur, releasing worldwide and in UK cinemas on 20th February through Eros International.
