Football For Peace launched in India; iconic Peace Match to be held at Parliament premises

Former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic and Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh launched the India chapter of Football For Peace (FFP) in Mumbai and revealed that Football for Peace’s iconic Peace Match in the country will he held on the premises of the Parliament later this year.

Established by Chilean legend Elias Figueroa in 2006, the Football For Peace gathered momentum in 2013 when British south Asian footballer Kashif Siddiqi turned it into an international movement.

“Football has been a great unifying force across the globe. The FFP has been using football diplomacy to bring people together by promoting peace and the virtues of inclusion since its inception,” Nemanja Vidic said. “I am sure it can pay a huge role in making India a more tolerant society,” he added.

“We have organised Peace Matches at many iconic locations, including at the Vatican, the Eiffel Tower and the Big Ben. We have begun the process of organising India’s match at the Parliament in New Delhi,” Kashif Siddiqi, who has played in UK’s professional league, said.

“We will be inviting the honourable Prime Minister of India to play in this match. We are also looking at other world celebrities, like David Beckham, the Prince of Monaco, as also top diplomats and India’s senior politicians to bring about awareness for FFP’s initiatives,” he added.

The FFP, which is supported by the English Premier League and the UK Foreign Office, will identify 10-12 cities in the country as part of its Cities for Peace initiative.

“Close to 1,600 kids in the age group of 7-14 years will be selected in each of these cities. They will be part of a yearlong project, which will include 60% classroom education and 40% football training. Once we reach 5,000 kids, we will declare it a City of Peace,” Kashif explained.

The FFP is supported by high-profile footballing legends like Pele, Ronaldinho as well as The Duke of Cambridge, Prince William and Albert II, Prince of Monaco.

“The work of Football for Peace is important and the fact that sport can do this, bridge so many barriers is fantastic,” The Duke of Cambridge, Prince William stated.

“It is a great honour for me to be involved in a movement which contributes to peace by uniting, educating and promoting friendships between people,” Ronaldinho, a World Cup winner and a popular star in India, said.

Ronaldinho has already been part of an FFP project in India that saw a women’s empowerment initiative in Kerala in 2016. Sixty girls were chosen as ambassadors who went on to engage 1,5000 children in Kozhikode. Over 1,00,000 fans turned up to watch Ronaldinho in action during the Peace Match in the city.

“The FFP is a great initiative. The UK Foreign Office is delighted to be part of the entire project,” Crispin Simon, the British Deputy High Commissioner, said. “We have been doing our bit to provide education to the socially backward people in India. This is a wonderful opportunity to take it to the next level,” he said.

Chairman of the Diya Group and global football academy founder (along with Liberia’s President George Weah) Nirav Tripathi is the founding Board Member of India’s Football For Peace chapter.

Indian Politician Kailash Vijayvargiya, who is currently National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), one of the two major political parties in India, is a Board Member.

‘Padmaavat’ protests continue in India, UK release unaffected

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bollywood epic Padmaavat, set to release in UK cinemas by Paramount Pictures UK on 25th Jan, is still facing protests in India.

After death treats were issued to lead actress Deepika Padukone and Bhansali, followed by multiple Indian states banning the film and the local Certification Board in India refusing to classify the film, Padmaavat was postponed.

After five cuts and a name change from ‘Padmavati’ to ‘Padmaavat’ the film will finally get a general release this week.

Based on 16th century Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s epic poem Padmavat, the movie faced resistance from its early stages due to rumour-mongering.

The film that showcases the valor of Rani Padmavati, Maharawal Ratan Singh and the famed Rajput ethos of honour, bravery and sacrifice, has from early last year sparked a furor in India inciting violence against the makers and cinemas showing the film.

The Supreme Court in India earlier this week ruled that all states must show the film. The protestors disagree saying that Padukone’s portrayal in the film ‘disrespects’ Rani Padmavati. Multiple cinema chains have already been vandalised.

Karni Sena, a Rajput caste extremist group, last year threatened UK citizens and encouraged their followers to burn down UK cinemas screening the film. By doing so, they incited violence and committed hate crime, an offense in Britain. Rajput groups in the UK also decided to protest the film, albeit without violence.

Also starring Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, the film has been classified by the British Board of Film Classification twice, the original and edited version, both with a 12A rating.

The Mayor of London’s office informed BollyNewsUK that the Mayor‘s Office of Policing and Crime has been alerted following the threats.

The Home Office stated “The UK Government will not tolerate any groups who spread hate or deliberately raise community fears and tensions by bringing disorder and violence to our towns and cities and the police have comprehensive powers to deal with such activities.”

Cineworld Cinemas PLC, the second largest cinema operator in Europe, who also control the 60 percent of the UK Bollywood market stated, “At Cineworld we show a diverse range of films to cater to all tastes and preferences, so we look forward to releasing an edited version of Padmaavat on 25 January at our cinemas.

They added, “As always, we take security very seriously and have rigorous procedures in place to protect our customers.”

Paramount Pictures UK will release Padmaavat (Hindi) in UK cinemas from 25th January 2017 in 2D, 3D and at selected sites in IMAX 3D.

Ranveer Shifts out of his Family Home to get closer to ‘Bajirao’

Bajirao MastaniIt is said that a star becomes an actor in the true sense of the word when he gives his all for a role of a lifetime. Ranveer Singh has proven this right by his decision to move out of his family home and shift closer to the ‘Bajirao Mastani’ set. Ever since the film has gone on floors, Ranveer has given his all, going beyond the call of contract commitments. After nursing a shoulder injury recently, he is now moving away from home to become ‘Bajirao’.

Riding high on universal applause that he earned as the urbane, gentle Kabeer in ‘Dil Dhadhakne Do’, Ranveer is dealing with a shoulder in recovery and a tough, all consuming role for his forthcoming ‘Bajirao Mastani’. Currently, he shoots for 12 hours every day & spends another 4 in physiotherapy to strengthen his shoulder as the film requires him to perform heavy-duty action in elaborate costumes. Intense in every sense, Ranveer also needs to remain in character as ‘Bajirao’ to play this historical figure. To prepare for this part, he shaved his head and chose to live in semi isolation before the film went on floors, away from cell phones & company.

As Mumbai’s unprecedented heavy rainfall impacts traffic, the actor feels he is losing too much time in commuting from the film’s sets to his home in Bandra. Therefore, Ranveer has decided to move into a new apartment in Goregaon to be closer to the film’s set. With traffic woes & with a shoulder in recovery, he needs all the spare time that he can get to heal & focus on his part. Therefore, the actor, who has never moved out of his family abode, has brought & moved into this new apartment for practical reasons.

Apart from physical transformations and unhindered commitment to one single film for a year, Ranveer has chosen to leave behind the comforts of his home to ensure that no external factors impact his work for this Sanjay Leela Bhansali epic. Talk about leaving no stone unturned to get the job done perfectly!

Bajirao Mastani will release in UK cinemas through Eros International on 18th December 2015. The first teaser will be seen in UK cinemas this Friday with Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Interview: Ranveer Singh talks about Dil Dhadakne Do, Priyanka Chopra & Anushka Sharma

Ranveer SinghBollywood star Ranveer Singh is back on our silver screens with Zoya Akhtar’s summer blockbuster, Dil Dhadakne Do. Also starring Anil Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar, Shefali Shah and Anushka Sharma, the movie is a comedy-drama set on a cruise ship.

The story begins in the sparkling lifestyle of popular Delhi socialite family and primarily revolves around the two siblings; portrayed by Ranveer and Priyanka.

Speaking to Bollywood Reporter Sunny Malik, Ranveer talked about the new craze of ‘dubsmashing’ videos, filming in Europe, working with Priyanka again and much more…

You have been interacting with your fans on Twitter very frequently lately…
Yes, I love communicating with my fans over Twitter. I like getting feedback about what people like and dislike about my work. My favourite part about social media is that they have direct access to me and vice versa. I really appreciate everything they write to me and it puts a smile to my face every day. It’s also a great medium to get your work out there. Internet has become such a major part of everyone’s life and digital marketing is huge now. I remember, the brand for my first advertisement didn’t have budgets for TV spots and we decided to only release it digitally. That opened up my eyes because it did really well and the reach was enormous. That gave me the belief that social media is important to promote your work as well as for interactions with fans.

Your Dubsmash videos are pretty amazing too…
(Laughs) We were doing interviews with a TV channel and they suggested that I should do one. A lot of people had sent me their ‘dubsmashes’ and I thought why not? I tried it and I really liked it. I did one with Priyanka and one from an old Anil Kapoor movie. These things amuse me more than anyone else (laughs). But I’m glad that other people enjoy them too. I do them for my own enjoyment though, in all honesty. It gives me a kick.

You play a typical Punjabi character in the film. You are Sindhi but are quite Punjabi in nature. It wasn’t very hard then to portray the role, or was it?
I am Sindhi and there is a little bit of Sikh in me as well. My paternal grandmother was a Muslim so I’m a little bit of a mix. My family came from Karachi, they were based there. It was actually very easy to get into the character unlike the current movie that I’m filming for, Bajirao Mastani with Deepika and Priyanka. It’s a Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie and I had to lock myself up for three weeks in a hotel room to work on my voice, body language, appearance and everything really. That was a big process but getting into Kabir Mehra’s character was pretty straightforward. He comes from a business family like I do, he was raised and comes from an urban area and is in the same age group as me. The character is demographically and socio-economically very similar to me. I noticed, while dubbing for the movie, that Dil Dhadakne Do is the closest to who I am compared to any other characters that I’ve played in the past.Ranveer & Farhan (1)

You are a big Anil Kapoor fan and it’s quite apparent from thepromos that you enjoyed every moment of working with him…
Yes, I’m glad you noticed (laughs). That applies to off-screen too as he’s such a great guy. He’s warm, hilarious and genuine. He doesn’t give you the ‘senior’ vibe and it’s more like acting with a ‘bro’. I had the great opportunity of working with another childhood idol of mine from the 90’s, Govinda, in Kill Dil. It was different because it felt like he was my senior and I would just listen to his stories and learn from his experiences. That was fun but with Anil it’s different. We work out together and we really bonded during the making of the film.

DilDhadakneDoPosterThere is quite a lot of buzz that you are working with Anushka Sharma again…
Well, Anushka is an absolutely stunning actress. Above all and beyond everything, I have tremendous respect for her talent and acting abilities. She’s the best part of most of the movies that she’s been in. She really made a mark with NH10 as an actor and producer. I was very happy and excited that I have such a solid co-actor to work with. I was actually pleasantly surprised that Anushka will portray the role. I never thought that she would take on such a role. But this shows us exactly how secure she is as an actress to make these choices as it’s an ensemble film. I was over the moon when she signed the film and had a blast catching up with her. I did two movies with her back-to-back at the start of my career. We lost touch after that but it was good catching up with her while working on Dil Dhadakne Do. She makes acting very easy for her co-stars so that was great.

You have changed tremendously from the time you made your acting debut with Anushka. Did she notice the changes?
Well, I was trying to make it a pleasurable experience for her to shoot with me for this film. That is because I know what a pain in the #@#@ I was in my first and second film. I had all these questions and I was overenthusiastic. I had to be guided at every step and that can be quite a painful process. She was trying to get her job done but also had to deal with this novice rookie actor. I can’t imagine that to be a pleasurable experience but she was kind and nice to me. This time I made sure that I could be the best co-actor for Anushka. I even asked her that a few times whether I have become better now and if I am less of a pain now (laughs).

Farhan, Priyanka, Anushka, Ranveer (1)In Gunday, you and Priyanka Chopra played lovers, in Dil Dhadakne Do you portray siblings and in your next, Bajirao Mastani you play a married couple. Isn’t that a bit weird?
It’s weird. I’m not going to lie. It’s a bit of a dysfunctional relationship that we share. She has pretty much played my girlfriend, my sister and wife back-to-back in the span of a year-and-a-half. It’s weird but also testimony to the fact that Priyanka is a very competent actor. She can fit into any mould. It’s weird when you say it like that (laughs) but Priyanka is really professional. We trust our directors and we hope our audiences have evolved to accept two actors playing different characters for different movies.

How was it like filming all over Europe and on a cruise for most of the film?
It was like a paid holiday (laughs). There was not much work. It was pretty much just having a conversation whether it was a bar, on a couch, in a room or on a bus. It’s not like Bajirao Mastani which is emotionally and physically draining. As it was an ensemble cast, I would have two days off every week and I would find a new place to go to every time. It really felt like a holiday. I don’t think any other shooting experience will match up to this.

Dil Dhadakne Do is now in UK cinemas nationwide.

This interview was first published in Asian Sunday Newspaper.

Kamal is heading to bankruptcy; Neelam and him can barely tolerate each other. Their business savvy daughter, Ayesha is sick of her marriage and wants a divorce, which leads to a lot of drama with her husband, and in laws who are also there. Their son Kabir, who is slated to take over the family business and hopefully save the company by marrying the only daughter of the wealthy Sood family, starts to have other ideas. He falls in love with an entertainer on board the ship and realizes he is not cut out for business after all.

Will the Mehra’s socially sink? How will they be able to confront the society that is so fake and judgmental?  How will they swim to shore and survive as a happy family? This is what Dil Dhadakne Do is about.

Ranveer Singh to endorse Durex condom

Ranveer Singh DurexTrust Ranveer Singh to chart his own course and make his own rules in everything he does. The young star who is on a high after delivering powerhouse performances in the highly acclaimed Lootera, the hundred-crore blockbuster Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram Leela and the super smash-hit Gunday, is starting his brand endorsement journey with the condom brand, Durex.

With this uber cool move, Ranveer joins a very exclusive bunch of A-list mainstream celebrities worldwide like Ke$ha, Prince, U2, 50 Cent and Daft Punk to endorse condoms. Of course this really “ballsy” activity has been worth a huge loot for the young star.

Says Ranveer Singh, “As an actor and as an individual, I have a propensity for pushing the envelope, breaking the mould and taking the road less travelled. As such, I constantly endeavour to build an equity that is unique – one that truly stands out from the crowd. Over the past three-and-a-half years that I’ve been a part of the Hindi film industry, I’ve declined several tempting endorsement offers. I’ve been saving my brand virginity for the right one. And now, finally, I’m popping my cherry with the world’s leading brand in Sexual well being – Durex! Sex is still considered a taboo in our country and the idea behind my association with Durex is to create awareness around sexual well being, promote safe sex and have fun while doing it! After intensive brainstorming, my partners at Durex and I have jointly devised a kick ass creative campaign, but it’ll be a while before it releases. It will surely hit the spot, but it won’t be coming soon!”

Says Mr. Nitish Kapoor, General Manager – RB India “As a global category leader, Durex is passionate about sexual well being and understands the importance of connecting with the youth in the country.Through our partnership with Ranveer, who is a hugely popular figure and loved by young people across the country, we will be able to positively engage in a discussion around the subject of sexual well-being and safe sex in India. We are extremely excited about our association and look forward to working with him.”

That’s Ranveer Singh walking the talk for you!

Ranveer Singh excited about Zoya Akhtar’s next!

Ranveer Singh - Photo by Rohan ShresthaRanveer’s official spokesperson has set the record straight about Excel Entertainment and Zoya Akhtar’s next. He plays the main lead in the film, however there is no exclusivity clause in the contract though he’ll be shooting for over 75-80 days of the total 90 day schedule of the film.

Adds Ranveer, “I’m super excited to work with Zoya as I believe she’s one of the most talented directors in the industry. Moreover it’s a part that really pushes me as an actor and gives me a chance to showcase an aspect of my performance that will surprise my fans.”

With his back to back hits, the normally fussy Ranveer has also finally opened up to doing endorsements and has recently signed on several A-list brands. The Excel team has been kind enough to work not only their but also his co-actors schedules around to help accommodate him as most brands want to shoot with him again for follow-up campaigns in the big festive season.

Interview: Ranveer Singh talks about ‘Gunday’

Gunday - UK (1)Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh is on a high after a rewarding 2013 with films like Lootera earning him critical appreciation and Goliyoun Ka Rasleela –Ramleela giving him a blockbuster at the box office. The young actor made his debut in Hindi films with YRF’s Band Baaja Barat in 2010 and soon thereafter became the studio’s blue-eyed boy. His third film with the studio, spearheaded by Aditya Chopra, is called Gunday and is set in the 1970s.

Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar (Mere Brother Ki Dulhan), Gunday will release in UK cinemas on Valentine’s Day, 14th February 2014. The film also stars international recording artist and actress Priyanka Chopra along with Arjun Kapoor and Irrfan Khan.

In conversation with Bollywood Reporter Sunny Malik, the 28-year-old talks about Gunday, his love for Govinda, the UK success of his last film and much more…

How would you describe the past year for you professionally?
I think it’s been a very good year. It’s just what the doctor ordered after the previous year (2012) where I didn’t have a release at all. I had a break of nineteen months which was a bit of a slump. It’s not the best thing when you don’t have any instalments in your body of work for such a long period, right in the beginning of your career. But I had two films in 2013 that have most certainly done well for me. Lootera received critical appreciation and I think, is the best reviewed film of the year [2013]. Goliyoun Ka Rasleela – Ramleela is a bona fide hit at the box office and also received critical acclaim. I am really happy with the way things have gone last year. I would describe Lootera as a step forward and Goliyoun Ka Rasleela – Ramleela as a giant leap forward in my career. All the nominations that I have received for my work in Goliyoun Ka Rasleela – Ramleela at various award functions have also validated my belief that I had a good past year. I feel good but it’s done and in the past. I am only looking forward to this year and my forthcoming releases Gunday and Kill Dil.

You play a quiet character in Gunday. That is very opposite to how you are in real life…
Well, it’s not as quiet as you would think if you are using the word at the outset. You have to really see the film and you will realise that it’s not Ram-Lakhan or Jai-Veeru. It’s Lakhan-Lakhan or Veeru-Veeru. It’s as if both of the characters are full of life. It’s just that in a conflict or dramatic situation, one of them acts impulsively, that is the character played by Arjun Kapoor. My character is a rather calculating guy. He calculates situations in order to make a smart move. The other guy is loose cannon. He doesn’t think. My character, Vikram, is a mastermind. He has just been blessed with a sharp mind and is a real hustler.

Gunday Music Launch - Ranveer

Two trailers of the film have been released. Don’t you think that too much of the film has already been revealed?
No, not really. The most important things for me is that an audience going to see the film should know what they are going to get out of the film in order to avoid disappointment. I have seen a lot of trailers in my life that promised something, yet I came out of the films saying “This is not what I went to see”. Somehow you just feel disappointed and think that you saw something that you weren’t expecting. I think, Gunday has a lot to offer and we are not misleading our audience about what they will see when they come to cinemas. There is no question of too much being given away because the two-and-a-half hours have so much to offer that no one will feel that too much was revealed already.

Your dance steps and expressions in a song from Gunday, Tune Maari Entriyaan, remind me of Govinda…
It’s unintentional but I will admit that I grew up on Govinda, Anil Kapoor and the Khans. I was a 90s baby and I was consuming everything that was popular. Govinda is my foundation for performance. In a song like Tune Maari Entryiaan, what will come out of me will probably be inspired by Govinda. The most surreal thing is that now I am sharing screen space with him. He is someone I looked up to and after watching his films I would say “Someday even I want to be a hero.” He is really my idol and inspiration, in the true sense of the word. The first morning he came on set for Kill Dil, I turned to Shaad Ali (director) and asked him, “Do you realise what is happening?” It was such a dream come true to be directed by Shaad in a film produced by YRF that also stars Govinda. I can’t even describe the feeling of working with him. I have always dreamt of becoming an actor. Whenever I envisioned it, the director would be Shaad and the producer would be Yash Raj Films. That is all in place.

Gunday is primarily about friendship. What is friendship for you?
Friendship for me is a bond. A lot of things go into that bond e.g. trust, dependability, reliability, sharing good and bad times. Your friend has to be your confidante and your pillar of support. I have been blessed to have really close buddies. I’d take a bullet for any of them without batting an eyelid and I’m sure they would do the same for me. I know of people who unfortunately, never had these kinds of relationships. Friends are the special relationships in life that you choose. I know of people who never had that kind of connection with anyone. I know a little bit about what it means to have a friend who you think of as more than just a friend, who is almost like a brother that you never had.

Gunday - UK Release (3)

You are really experimenting with your style and outfits off-screen recently…
It’s just that I’m bored. It is out of sheer boredom. I could not be asked to wear one more black suit. It’s either black, grey or dark blue. It’s the same thing over and over again. I got really bored and wanted to wear something different, for my own amusement. I understand that it polarises the fashionistas out there. Some love it, some hate it, some think it’s outstanding and some think it’s ghastly. But that’s okay. I dress for myself. If I feel good about what I’m wearing when I step out, that is all what matters. But yes, sometimes I look back and think, “That suit was really ghastly. I don’t know what I was thinking.” But still, it’s okay because in the moment it seemed fine and it’s something different.

Your last film Goliyoun Ka Rasleela – Ramleela performed better than most releases in the UK last year beating films like Krrish 3, earning almost £1 million at the UK box office. What are your expectations from Gunday now?
Wow, that is some amazing statistics. I do think that it has a lot to do with Deepika’s star value and most of all Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s brand value in the overseas market. But I did benefit from it. A lot of people watched it and I hope people liked my work. I think people have me in their mind and will watch my next film. Gunday is a big film, which I think will be enjoyed by UK audiences. It’s a credible mass entertainer. A mass entertainer has almost become an insult as they are films with no stories, item numbers and a few gags. I am very proud that Gunday is not like that and has a very good story.

‘Our Chemistry was organic’ – Deepika Padukone

The leading actors of Eros International and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh recently spoke to Bollywood reporter Sunny Malik via a video conference from Mumbai.

Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhanramsali, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela is the story of Ram (Ranveer Singh), the local village Romeo – a colourful, charming yet dramatic vagabond and Leela (Deepika Padukone) – an unbridled and passionate village Juliet. The only thing in common between these two strangers is their families’ hatred for each other. The two communities have been sworn enemies since the past 500 years and their own kin falling in love with each other is worse than any storm that could have ever come.

When Ram and Leela see each other for the first time, their worlds collide, wars are fought and destinies are written in blood, forever. Set in a land of guns, vengeance against a magnificent musical backdrop, Ram and Leela fight the world to live their own dreams.

Ranveer Singh’s physical transformation

Ram-Leela-Ranveer-Singh-Shirtless“It was a very long process to transform physically to be Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram. I enjoy working out, going to the gym and physical activity but the hard part was the diet. That was where I had to sacrifice and stay away from chocolates, which I absolutely love. That’s where it gets hard. I wouldn’t wish the diet I was on even on my worst enemies. You will be put off, if you see photos of what I had to eat. A special expert had been flown down from the UK to train me for a twelve week plan with workouts twice a day and controlled meal portions. We had to do it because Mr. Bhansali decided that he wanted to showcase my physicality. He said that every girl who watches the film should lust after Ram and every guy should lust to be like Ram. He said that I need to look sexy and I am glad that I did hit the gym hard because I am very happy with the results. The response I got was great. I am happy that it has been captured on celluloid because you can’t keep such physicality for a long time as it affects your central nervous system and your body starts feeling deprived.”

Our Chemistry was organic – Deepika Padukone

Ram-Leela Deepika kisses Ranveer SinghThe first scene I had to shoot for the film was a sequence you see in the song ‘Lahu Munh Lag Gaya’. I put some colour on Ranveer’s face and then there is the kiss. It was my first day on the film and we didn’t rehearse, plan or discuss it beforehand. It was given to us when we got the sets. I have always believed that everything happens for a reason. Me and Ranveer had only spent some time together doing workshops but I had not spent any time with him as a co-star before that scene. I think, the fact that I was not familiar with him, worked for the scene. It worked out well because in the film, it’s the first time they meet. The chemistry that you see between us is very organic. It just happened.

Interview: “I am excited about my line-up of films” – Ranveer Singh

Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh speaks to BollyNewsUK about his films, co-stars, social networking and much more…

Ranveer in Lootera

How are you choosing your films?
If I have to be very honest, I go by the director’s previous work. I need to be excited about the person whom I will be putting my faith into. I am a director’s actor and for me, he is the captain of the ship. Then I look at the story of the project. It should be a story that has entertainment value and should be engaging. The story should evoke some kind of emotions out of me. Finally, I look at my part and character. It has to be a challenge that excites me because I’m going to put everything into it and I’m going to transform myself into the character. These are the main criteria that I look at when choosing a film.

Does this mean that you aren’t concerned about who plays the leading lady in your film?
No, not at all as that’s not my concern. I leave that to my director. If I am asked about my opinion, then I do say what I think. However, I don’t get involved in the casting of my heroines and I don’t make any demands. If I trust the script and my director, then I trust him to cast someone opposite me who will do justice to the role.

Ranveer Singh - Photo by Rohan ShresthaYour most recent release is Lootera, released in UK cinemas on 5th July. The director’s last release, Udaan, won many accolades and awards. Was that something that drew you towards doing his next film?
Yes. When I saw the film, I thought to myself how this director made such kind of a film in India. It was so unique and powerful. I decided back then that this is a creative mind that I would like to collaborate with. When the director, Vikramaditya Motwane, won the awards for Udaan, I won my award for my debut film Band Baaja Barat. I met him at the award function and told him that I loved his film and that I would love to work with him if he has a script for me. When I was offered the film, I loved the script and my role. The character I play in the film is slightly reserved and he doesn’t speak much, which is not usually attributed to my persona.

You were linked with your Lootera co-star Sonakshi Sinha. How do you deal with such rumours?
(Laughs) I have to give credit to Sonakshi for that rumour. She was the one who broke the ice initially and was really cool as a person. I remember the first time we met for this film was for the look test. She had started before me as we were shooting for a magazine cover. There were also all these rumours doing the rounds about us two. When I entered the room, she just shouted across ‘Hi Boyfriend’. She is really nice and comfortable to work with. She has a lot of ease to her approach towards a take and her character. I got to learn a lot from her. She chilled out throughout the whole process. She takes everything very easy and that translates into her performance. She doesn’t stress about anything and is cool as a cucumber.

So it doesn’t bother you whatever is written about you in the newspapers?
Well, both of us are mature enough to know that it’s just tabloid journalism. They need to fill space and make sales. They sensationalise news and that is part and parcel of the work that we do. We are young people and we know that we will be written about. We know better than to let such rumours affect our professional equation. I personally used to worry about these link-up stories but not anymore. I don’t subscribe to any tabloids anymore. I find them really beside the point. The point here is that I am a performer and a professional and I am here to perform and act in films. I allow all my energies to focus on that and don’t let myself to be distracted by what is being written about me. I don’t even know these days what is being written about me. When people tell me that they have read something I react with ‘Really? Is that what is being written about me?’ as I have no clue myself.

Ranveer Singh by Rohan ShresthaYour confidence was misconstrued as arrogance. Did you change yourself after almost everyone thought that you were arrogant?
When I started out I didn’t know that I have to act differently in front of people. I was just being comfortable in my own skin. I didn’t know what to say and what not to say. On whatever platform I went, I behaved just as I did with my friends, family or in my living room. I didn’t know that I shouldn’t do that. However, I have now learnt that. I don’t believe that I am arrogant. I don’t think that people who ever spoke to me would say that I am arrogant. I have developed a certain sense of tact which is important for a public figure. I know that I was misunderstood and fortunately, I still sometimes speak my mind. I still say what I am asked about and have managed to retain eighty or ninety percent of what I am. So it’s all good. As you get more experience, you learn more about how to be a public figure, which is not easy.

How do you prepare for a scene? Do you rehearse or are you very spontaneous?
I used to study a lot and do a lot of homework for acting before I performed. But now I have seen that a lot of my co-actors, especially Sonakshi Sinha, leave a lot of room for spontaneity. There is a certain organic nature that comes into the performance when you do that because it’s unplanned and unrehearsed and that’s the beauty of such a performance. I leave far more room now for spontaneity. I pretty much just learn my lines now and don’t fix a way of how I am going to perform the scene in case the director wants to change or mould the performance. He can then take it into any direction once we are on the film set.

You are recently joined Twitter and have a verified account but you don’t tweet much but retweet more…
(Laughs) Yeah, I think If I start tweeting then I will become obsessive. For the time being, I am using it as a platform for my work so that my fans know what professional work I am doing. For example, I will tweet a poster of my film. I use it as a platform for that. I had to get it verified before I started using it. It was a real battle to do that. I had to go through a lot to get it verified. There were many imposters on Twitter who were tweeting many incorrect political comments and inappropriate things about senior actors. I was getting into trouble because newspapers were picking up those tweets and were attributing them to my name. I was getting into a real mess because of these imposters which is why I wanted a verified account.

Ranveer SinghHave you experienced people on Twitter who ‘hate’ you or your work for no reason?
I was warned about this by my talent management. I was told that once I get on Twitter, there will be flak coming my way. I have been lucky though because I remember just two negative messages that were sent to me. All I see on Twitter is love. I get the warmest and full of love messages sent to me by fans. I read every message and I really can’t recall more than one or two negative messages.

What other films are you currently working on?
I am working on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela opposite Deepika Padukone. I also have another Yash Raj Films production, Gunday, releasing early next year. I will start working on Shaad Ali’s Kill Dill, also a YRF production, this year with Parineeti Chopra. I am excited about my line-up of films. There is plenty of variations of films and differences between the characters I am playing in each film. I will have four releases in a span of a year so I am happy with that.

How was your experience working with Deepika Padukone in Ram Leela?
It was amazing. She has really come into her own as a performer. She is very professional as well. The one thing I admire about her is her ability to multitask. She works very hard and that’s what I admire about her.
