Watch the trailer here:

Synopsis:
Exotic island, youthful abandon, far far away, Ved and Tara – a story begins. Ved has grown up among stories. As a kid in Simla, he would collect money, even steal money so that the old storyteller would tell him stories. Ramayan, Helen of Troy, Laila Majnu, Heer Ranjha, Aladdin, Romeo Juliet. The storyteller would also say that all stories are the same. Ved wants his story with Tara to be different. So they decide to not tell each other who they are, to only lie about themselves and after returning from the island to never meet each other again.  But they do meet again. The question is whether they will be able to shape their story in the way they want. Will the muse be able to make an artist of a common man, will Ved be able to break the shackles of ordinary existence, escape the corporate rat-race and become the way Tara sees him – the exuberant story-teller? Corsica, Simla, Delhi, Calcutta, Japan – all the world is a stage – as the drama of Ved and Tara unfolds. Frolic, rage, quirk, laughter. Defeat, victory. Tamasha.

Interview: Ranbir Kapoor talks about ‘Bombay Velvet’

Bombay Velvet UK ReleaseBollywood superstar, Ranbir Kapoor, is India’s heart-throb with millions of fans around the world. Even when the actor is in London, he is greeted by screaming fans when they spot him enjoying a meal at Nobu, relaxing at Café Rouge on James Street or shopping at Selfridges.

Born to actors Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, Ranbir belongs to the First Family of Indian cinema and is the grandson of India’s most noted actor, Raj Kapoor.

Kapoor learnt method acting at New York’s Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute and is one of the few Bollywood actors with a formal training in performing arts.

In 2007, Ranbir made his acting debut with ‘Saawariya’ which won him several accolades and established him as a budding superstar. His performances in his last few films such as ‘Barfi’ and ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ and the commercial success of these movies gave him a straight ticket to the big league.

But it’s not just his work which made him so famous. After dating actress Deepika Padukone and their public break-up in the beginning of his career, he was considered an industry Casanova. There were constant affair rumours with whoever he was working with and his personal life was splashed across India’s newspapers frequently. Even today, conjecture about when and if he will marry his current girlfriend, British-Indian actress Katrina Kaif, is more of a talking point than his work.

While Ranbir was pretty open about his relationship with Deepika, he has never really admitted to being together with Katrina Kaif and neither has she. The duo are often spotted together abroad and in India. They both tend to avoid media interactions to evade questions about their personal life.

BOMBAY VELVET RANBIR KAPOOR 20TH CENTURY FOX UKAll the drama about his personal life doesn’t really affect the actor as he is currently working with some of the biggest names in the industry and is wholeheartedly focused on his job.

Kapoor can be seen in UK cinemas this month in ‘Bombay Velvet’, produced by Fox Star India, a joint venture between 20th Century Fox and Star India.

The film is directed by Anurag Kashyap and also stars Anushka Sharma and director-producer Karan Johar (My Name Is Khan) in his first full-fledged acting role.

Set against the backdrop of ambition, love, greed, and jazz, ‘Bombay Velvet’ is the story of one ordinary man, played by Ranbir Kapoor, who goes against all odds and forges his destiny to become a rich and successful man.

Ranbir Kapoor spoke to Bollywood reporter Sunny Malik about the film, his co-stars, avoiding social media, being a star, friendships and much more.

How did Bombay Velvet come about for you?
It’s a strange story. I was supposed to do another film a few years ago which didn’t materialise. My friend, Vikas Bahl, who is one of the producers of Bombay Velvet gave me the script and asked me for feedback. I knew that Anurag Kashyap wanted to make this film and after reading the script I called him up myself. He told me that he couldn’t visualise me in the role as he was used to seeing me in the typical urban coming-of-age type of characters. The film did eventually happen and it’s been a dream experience for me.

Bombay Velvet UK

How was the experience of changing your appearance for the character?
It was very different especially because of the kind of character that I play in the film. He is someone on the streets of Bombay with plenty of passion and greed. I had to look the part. The look has been inspired by Indian actors Kishore Kumar and Raj Kapoor from the 1950’s as well as Robert De Niro. We tried to mix everything to bring in a new look to the character. If someone has seen ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, they will see a completely different person in me this time around. The whole crew also worked extremely hard to recreate the retro look of Bombay.

What do you have to say about the comparisons being made to Hollywood films?
The comparisons are unfortunate. We made an Indian film which is essentially a love story with its share of conflicts. It’s also something new for Indian audiences. The visuals of gangs in Bombay in the 1950’s isn’t something they are used to, hence the comparisons. I can promise everyone that it’s very much a Hindi film.

You are working with Anushka Sharma for the first time…
I have loved Anushka right from her debut film, ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’. I have known her on a personal level even before we started filming for ‘Bombay Velvet’. It was really comfortable. Anushka comes with no trappings of a star. She brought a lot of positivity and talent to the role which made the experience quite enjoyable. The love story is the spine of the film and it is very important that audiences believe in it. I believe that chemistry between characters on-screen is always written by the writer and created by the director. The actors just bring the energy.

BOMBAY VELVET 20TH CENTURY FOX UKHow did you react when you were told that director-producer Karan Johar will play the antagonist in the film?
To be honest, I was shocked. I was very surprised that he was going to play the main villain in ‘Bombay Velvet’. The cunning and manipulative nature that Karan brought to the character was very unique. I don’t think any other actor in Bollywood could have done that. We also don’t realise how big of a star Karan Johar is. Even though he hasn’t really acted in movies, he is known worldwide and has brought a lot of star value to the film and weight to the character.

You are not on social media but you hate promoting a movie. Would it not be easier for you to just join the bandwagon?
I truly believe that online and digital is the way forward. I support and encourage online marketing because you reach a huge audience. I personally don’t like social media just because so much is written about my personal life. I have nothing against these platforms. It’s a double-edged sword for me. Personally, I don’t feel comfortable using social media but I do know that it can help promoting a movie.

Your father, Rishi Kapoor, recently re-joined Twitter. He is hilarious and unabashedly honest…
I know, all my friends have told me that after reading his tweets. To be honest, that’s how my father has always been like. He isn’t trying to be funny or trying to be someone he isn’t. I am glad that people are getting to know this other side of him now too.

Bombay Velvet UK CinemasDo you believe that a ‘star’ needs to remain inaccessible?
Absolutely. Actors and celebrities around the world are over-exposed nowadays. The paparazzi trend has kicked off in India too and a lot is written about our personal lives in tabloids. The sense of mystery about actors is dying because people have too much information about them. Half of the time, it’s nonsensical and extremely exaggerated information. It’s good to stay away, do your work, build a little bit of a mystery and let people discover you through your work.

There is some distrust in the movie among the main characters. Do you personally find it hard to trust people because of who you are?
It’s a tough predicament to be an actor in our industry. When you are successful, you have many people around you who want to work with you. When your films are not doing well, they all run away. It’s very important to know who your real friends are and who can be trusted. Friendships need to be on the basis of love, care and trust. It’s very hard to get this in the film industry. I have been lucky enough to find friends in the industry like Ayan Mukherji, Imtiaz Ali and Anurag Basu with whom I am also working professionally. It’s very hard though. You have to be careful because when things go bad in your life and people who you thought were friends, may just not be there for you.

‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ was your first film that crossed £1M at the UK Box Office and was a blockbuster worldwide. Do you feel the pressure with this film now?
‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ was a film made with a commercial purpose. It had a quintessential love story, a beautiful heroine, a flirting hero, super hit songs and the dances. It was expected that it would do well. I didn’t expect commercial success for my film ‘Barfi’ with Priyanka Chopra. It was surprising. It’s important to surprise yourself and see how things unfold. ‘Bombay Velvet’ is that kind of film. You have to leave it to the audience because films are made for them. Movie-making is expensive and we don’t create films for ourselves or just the art purpose. They have to work at the Box Office too.

Ranbir promotes Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani in LondonYou will be filming in London for the first time for Karan Johar’s next directorial, ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’, this summer. Are you excited?
Absolutely, especially after doing an intense film like ‘Bombay Velvet’. I have finished my film ‘Tamaasha’ with Deepika Padukone and I will be completing ‘Jagga Jasoos’ with Katrina Kaif this year too. I really want to do a light, urban love story and there is nobody better for that genre than Karan. To work with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Anushka in the film is really thrilling and another exciting chapter for me. I just hope that I can match the expectations of a Karan Johar hero. He has worked with the best of the Indian film industry and it’s really heart-warming that he has chosen me as his next leading actor.

What else can we expect from you?
‘Tamaasha’ directed by Imtiaz Ali should release by the end of the year, perhaps November. Anurag Basu’s ‘Jagga Jasoos’ should release after ‘Tamaasha’. Karan Johar’s ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ will release next year. I will also be collaborating with Ayan Mukherji for the third time. It’s not a superhero movie as many people have that misconception. He is making a mythological trilogy set in contemporary times. He will be spending ten years of his life making that trilogy and that’s definitely very exciting.

Ranbir also revealed all his favourite things:

As the film is slated to hit the UK screens next week from February 13, here are five reasons why it’s a film worth watching:

Arjun Rampal
The good-looking hunk will be seen after a long time on-screen. Arjun will be playing a filmmaker who falls for every heroine he works with in the film. The kind of intrigue, which is created around his character, is one of the reasons, why you must book your tickets soon.

Ranbir Kapoor
This Kapoor lad too will be seen after a pretty long time. In ‘Roy’, his chemistry with Jacqueline Fernandes will be something new for the eyes. The makers have been successful in keeping his character under wraps so far.

Jacqueline Fernandez
The fans loved her in ‘Kick’, and since then there has been no looking back for this Sri Lankan beauty. It is for the first time that Jackky will be seen in a double role. There has been enough detailing done in order to keep her one look distinct from another one.

Sizzling chemistry
There is enough fodder for the eyes. In a way, what’s better than watching sizzling Jacky romance both Arjun and Ranbir in the same film. The storyline has been set in such a pattern that both the on-screen love affairs look equally appealing to the audience. Go watch it for their on-screen chemistry.

Music
The background score of ‘Roy’ has been created by Sanjoy Chowdhury, where as Ankit Tiwari, Amaal Mallik and Meet Bros Anjjan have composed the songs. ‘Tu Hai Ki Nahi’, ‘Sooraj Dooba Hain’ and ‘Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan’ are some of the tracks already riding high on the chart-buster lists.

Filmonix to release ROY in UK cinemas on 13th February

Life imitates art and the lines between fiction and reality are blurred in 2015’s most stylish and engaging romantic thriller, ROY, releasing on 13th February, produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Divya Khosla Kumar and Freeway Pictures and distributed in the UK by Filmonix.

Bhushan Kumar’s upcoming romantic thriller, ROY, has created quite a stir; a film that has been much-anticipated by the industry as well as the fans. The trailer crossed three million views on YouTube in just three days of its release followed by the songs, which have gained popularity across all media platforms.

Ayesha - ROY (1)After giving audiences several musical hits such as Aashiqui 2 and Yaariyan, ROY is said to be another feather in this renowned company’s hat. Debutant director Vikramjit Singh presents a handsome and accomplished lead cast comprising Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal and Jacqueline Fernandez in a slick, romantic thriller, set against a sweeping backdrop of international locales. Ankit Tiwari, Meet Bros Anjjan and Amaal Malik have created a beautifully haunting soundtrack to complement the air of onscreen mystery and suspense. Sure to be lauded by critics and a new generation of Indian cinema audiences, ROY marks a dynamic new turn in the Indian thriller genre.

While Ranbir Kapoor plays the title role, Arjun Rampal plays the role of a director and will be seen in a completely different look in ROY. The two are paired with Jacqueline Fernandez for the first time in a film. Jacqueline, who plays a double role, is seen romancing the two most dashing leading men of Bollywood in ROY. The actress will be seen in two different looks: elegantly glamorous and vivaciously hip, respectively.

Arjun and Ranbir in RoyT-Series head honcho Bhushan Kumar says, “We received a fabulous response to the theatrical trailer and the first song Sooraj Dooba Hai, which is now a party anthem for the season, followed by Tu Hai Ki Nahi and Chhitiyan Kallaiyan. The rest of the songs from the album have an individuality of their own and help the story go forward. The trailer helped us build enough curiosity on the characters each actor plays. Where Arjun is seen in a role and look he has never tried before, Jacqueline plays a double role for the first time and both are poles apart; while Ranbir plays a dynamic title role and he is supportive to the film and Vicky.”

Synopsis: ROY is the greatest thief ever known to man, having pulled off impossible heists in every part of the globe. ‘Kabir’ is a highly successful filmmaker. Will Roy finally reveal his face to the world? Will he mess up his heist or will he be caught?

Roy releases on 13th February, produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Divya Khosla Kumar and Freeway Pictures, distributed in the UK by Filmonix.

Kapoor Screen Icons Ranbir, Rishi and Neetu Host Exclusive Press Conference To Launch Besharam in the UK

Two generations of the iconic Kapoor acting dynasty were in the UK on Thursday, 19th September 2013 for the official launch of their new family entertainer film Besharam, which releases on 2nd October 2013 through Reliance Entertainment.

A co-production between and Movie Temple and Reliance Entertainment, hearthrob son and Indian Cinema’s iconic leading man Ranbir Kapoor was joined by his famous real-life parents Rishi [Kapoor] and Neetu [Kapoor] as the ‘Kapoor Khandan’ came together for a fun and candid press conference. Besharam marks the first time that all three Kapoor family members have acted together on the big screen.

The spacious hall was hushed in anticipation as the three Bollywood superstars made their grand entrance to a frenzy of flashblubs and applause. Taking their seats together with lead actress in the film Pallavi Sharda and Sanjeev Lamba, CEO, Reliance Entertainment, Mahesh Ramanathan, COO, Reliance Entertainment and Himanshu Mehra, partner at Movie Temple, proceedings commenced with a special viewing of the item song featuring Ranbir, Rishi and Neetu, Chal Hand Uthake Nachche.

The media were then treated to a special welcome from the man himself Ranbir, who said: ‘I am delighted to be here in the UK. This visit is even more special this time as I finally have my parents with me. Besharam is very much a family entertainer, so it is fitting that I should come with my father and mother.’

The floor was then opened up for a lively question and answer session. With the interest garnered by the fact that the Kapoor clan have acted together for the first time, the media asked the trio questions about how it felt to act together, to which Ranbir said: ‘It feels great. Both my parents are an inspiration to me. My father and mother are fabulous actors and my father has been passionate about his craft for over 40 years. I have learnt so much from both of them.’

Neetu Kapoor added: ‘For me, I took on this role in Besharam for two reasons. Firstly, it was a very unique script and concept, and secondly I could act with my family. It was nice, it felt secure and I was in my comfort zone.’

Attention then turned to beautiful leading lady Pallavi Sharda. The Indo-Australian actress spoke of her association with the Bollywood industry and of how Bollywood is perceived by the Indian community in Australia. ‘When I was growing up I was fascinated by Bollywood. I used to wear a Bindi on my forehead whenever I went out. I love Bollywood; it formed a big part of my identity when I was growing up in Australia. Australian Indians really identify with Bollywood as it acts as a way for them to connect with their roots. Indian Cinema is increasingly more cross-over nowadays in the type of films that are being made.’

She added: ‘I have had a great time working on this film. The Kapoors have been very welcoming to me during the making of this film. I had a great time.’

When asked about the key messaging behind Besharam, Ranbir Kapoor said: ‘Beshram is not about embarrassing anybody. Besharam is an attitude. It’s about listening and following your heart.’

Speaking about the evolving of the Indian film market, Rishi Kapoor said: ‘We are evolving by each film. We are making technically better films. Few films offer a message to society.’

In response to a question on what Mr Sanjeev Lamba, CEO of Reliance Entertainment’s expectations are from Besharam, he said: “Reliance Entertainment distributes and produces both Hollywood and Bollywood movies. With a strategic global outreach, our films are going over 65 – 70 countries. Besharam is a movie for all. Besharam being the most commercial family entertainer, we want it to be liked by all.”

Mr Mahesh Ramanathan, COO of Reliance Entertainment added: ‘There are 200 countries in the world. And Bollywood has gone only to 35 countries of the South Asian population. There are wonderful markets who are on the lookout for Bollywood. It is about taking the infrastructure, funding people with passion, to take the films to various markets. Reliance has one of the biggest distribution structures from India.’

Speaking about his involvement in the production, Himanshu Mehra, Partner at Movie Temple said: “I was part of Abhinav’s team with Dabbang. We realised that we could form a company and work together. We then approached to Ranbir Kapoor and Neetu Ji with the script and went ahead with Besharam. Our like mindedness has helped us work in unison.”

Ranbir Kapoor goes the Bhangra way in ‘Besharam’

Besharam UK ReleaseRanbir is all set to surprise his fans as he goes Besharam with his bhangra moves. After setting the screen ablaze with popular anthems, like Bachana Ae Haseeno and Badtameez Dil, this time Ranbir Kapoor shakes his leg bhangra style this autumn.

As Ranbir Kapoor plays the role of a street smart car mechanic living in a Delhi orphanage, he had to familiarize himself with the mannerisms, lingo and style of a Punjabi Delhi-ite.

First off, Ranbir has added the gold old balle balle in his repertoire. A perfectionist that he is, Ranbir took time off to learn the dance form which is a culmination of jumps and rhythms. Ranbir has been trying to master the dance form, as it isn’t as easy as it sounds.

Commenting on this Ranbir Kapoor said: “Bhangra is one of the most energetic and vibrant dance forms requiring a lot of strength and stamina to perform. With its intense music, one cannot stop moving their feet to its beats.”

Next he took lessons in Punjabi to perfect the dialect as his character will be required to speak the language. Essaying a proper Punjabi character, Ranbir was given a few dialogues in chaste Punjabi during the shoot. Even during the usual Hindi dialogues, his diction needed to be given a minor Punjabi twang.

In Besharam Ranbir Kapoor plays ‘Babli’, a street smart, fun-loving, football-playing car mechanic who has seen the dark side of life as one of India’s many desolate orphan children. The worldly-wise Babli learnt at a young age how to survive the trauma of having no one to care for him. He grew up fast in a Delhi orphanage and has devoted his life to helping and mentoring the other children in the shelter.

The cheeky and fiercely independent Babli takes as his life motto: “Na Samaan Ka Moh, Na Apmaan ka Bhay”, translated as “No Want for Respect, No Fear of Disrespect”. The film unfolds his many ‘Besharam’ moments with hilarious consequences.

Besharam which is directed by Abhinav Kashyap, stars Pallavi Sharda opposite Ranbir Kapoor. The movie will also see Ranbir sharing the frame with his parents – actors Rishi and Neetu Kapoor – for the first time on the big screen.

The film is presented by Reliance Entertainment and set to releasein UK cinemas on 2nd October .

Ranbir Kapoor to promote ‘Besharam’ in London

Besharam - UK ReleaseBollywood sensation Ranbir Kapoor will promote his upcoming comedy Besharam (Shameless), releasing 2nd October 2013 through Reliance Entertainment in UK cinemas, in London this month.

The actor will be accompanied by Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor, Pallavi Sharda and  director Abhinav Kashyap.

According to sources, the Barfi! actor will meet the British press and later on attend a private party in the capital during his promotional visit here.

Besharam marks the first film to feature Ranbir Kapoor with his parents, screen legends Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh. The film also stars Pallavi Sharda who made her debut in My Name is Khan and comedy king-pin Javed Jaffery. It is directed by the accomplished Abhinav Kashyap, who previously directed the blockbuster Dabangg. The musical score comes from popular film composer Lalit Pandit responsible for memorable scores for mega cinematic hits such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Dabangg.

He sets out to fix all the wrongs in his life but continues to be shameless as he does so. But his parents Inspectors Chulbul Chautala (Rishi Kapoor) and Bulbul Chautala (Neetu Kapoor) are after him to mend his mischievous ways.

“Ranbir didn’t drive the car, but I took him for a ride on the first day itself. He is happy for me. Ranbir was like, ‘I know how it feels to buy your first big car.’ He told me how he felt when he got his maiden vehicle. I guess the feelings are the same,” says Aditya, with a smile.”

“He is a car junkie who is constantly updating and upgrading,” says Aditya.

As for Aditya, he has bought a new car after driving a very old vehicle for years. “Yes, it was famous for all the wrong reasons,” he says with a laugh. “I drove that car for many years. I still have my old car and love it a lot. I feel, the more the merrier.”

Ranbir to travel to Russia

Ranbir promotes Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani in LondonRanbir Kapoor will promote his recent romantic comedy three days before its release in the foreign country

Ayan Mukerji’s recent film, that has apparently earned the biggest opening at the box office this year, is now all set to release in Russia.

And to make sure it rakes in big numbers overseas as well, the film’s lead actor Ranbir Kapoor will soon head to the foreign location to promote the romantic-comedy. For the record, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD) crossed the R100 cr mark within the first week of its release in India.

“YJHD will release in Russia in the coming months. Ranbir will be there for three days before the release so that he has time to engage with the media and market the film,” says an insider close to the development of the project.

Incidentally, films starring Ranbir’s grandfather — the late Raj Kapoor — are very popular in Russia. He shot to fame and developed a fan following after hit films like Awara (1951), Shree 420 (1955) and Mera Naam Joker (MNJ, 1970) released there. MNJ also featured Russian actors. As per reports, back in the ’50s, when Russia was in a war-torn condition, the people considered Kapoor’s films a beacon of hope. He is revered as an icon even today in Russia.

“Ranbir is excited about this trip and is looking forward to interacting with his fans,” adds the insider.

Karan Johar in ‘Bombay Velvet’ with Ranbir Kapoor

Jab Tak Hai Jaan - Premiere - Karan JoharDirector, producer, writer, chat show host, reality dance show judge: Karan Johar’s CV could rival that of the very best in showbiz. But the one thing the 41-year-old hasn’t done — a few cameos aside — is take up a serious acting role. Now, that is set to change.

A few days ago, Karan decided to take up an offer to act in Anurag Kashyap’s next, Bombay Velvet (BV). Karan says the offer “came out of the blue”. In the film, he will be seen playing the “antagonist” opposite Ranbir Kapoor.

“Yes, it’s true that I’m acting in Bombay Velvet, and of course, it’s unusual for me,” Karan says, adding, “I was blown away by the narrative. And all the cast members — besides Ranbir and Anushka (Sharma, lead actress) — have strong roles in Anurag’s film. Since I’m playing an antagonist, there are shades of grey to my character.”

Over a decade-and-ahalf ago, Karan played a cameo in the Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol-starrer Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995). More recently, he made guest appearances in films like Om Shanti Om (2007) and Luck By Chance (2009).

But what’s interesting is that now the director of feel-good, family-oriented dramas will be seen in a negative role. Karan explains, “I’ve never shied away from trying new things. Fifteen years ago, I took up direction (with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai; 1998) on an impulse, followed by my stint as a TV show host (Koffee With Karan).”

He says he always knew that, somewhere down the line, acting will happen. “I didn’t know whether I was ready for it. Now, I will start working on my role with Anurag. I will follow his directorial vision, and I won’t bring my director’s baggage on the sets,” he clarifies.

Has he discussed this with anyone else? “Besides Anurag, Ranbir too was keen that I come on board. As for my mother (Hiroo Johar), she has always been encouraging in whatever I do,” he says.

When contacted, Anurag says, “Karan is fantastic for the part. I actually wanted to bounce ideas off him. He loved the script, and I suddenly asked if he will play the role. He was surprised, but said yes. Karan said he will charge Rs. 11, and the money kept aside will go for special effects and production.”

Deepika and Ranbir – Bollywood’s Golden Pair

Deepika Padukone in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani - UK Release (4)Think about romantic movies in Hindi cinema then one can simply visualise Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha crooning love melodies in a scenic location. Or imagine Kajol running across the wide yellow fields just to give a tight hug to the awaiting with opened wide arms Shah Rukh Khan.

Or if you are a lover of black and white era then chances are that you will immediately strike an emotional chord thinking of Dilip Kumar and Madhubala cooing softly to each other.

Taking a walk down memory lane, we have seen some really wonderful on-screen couples. Their chemistry sets the tone of the film and the audiences always look forward to them coming back together.

It will be perfect to call them the Golden pairs of Bollywood. For, these couples add dimension to the script and maybe personally share an understanding and emotional connect which gets manifested on the silver screen as well.

In the 100 years of Bollywood, we have managed to only have a handful of such pairs. Their online equity, films are etched out, remembered and appreciated across generations. If the filmy clock is set backwards, we can undoubtedly randomly pick up the following pairs – Raj Kapoor & Nargis, Dilip Kumar & Madhubala, Amitabh & Rekha, Shah Rukh Khan & Kajol.

Each of these couple has made love shine like never before and have given many hit films together. Now, it seems like Bollywood has found another golden pair.

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, the new golden ‘jodi’ are seen romancing in the recently released Ayan Mukerji’s film, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Even the industry has been abuzz with the duo coming together.

Filmmaker Anurag Basu had quoted on IBD: “Ranbir and Deepika are one of the best onscreen jodis in the history of Indian Cinema.”

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is successfully running in UK cinemas.

Interview: “Happiness is only real when shared with someone” – Ranbir Kapoor

Ranbir in London - Yeh Jawaani Hai DeewaniBollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor was in London recently to promote his latest release, Karan Johar’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. The young award-winning actor teamed up with Johar’s production house, Dharma Productions and with director Ayan Mukherji again after the success of Wake Up Sid (2009).

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani also unites the Kapoor lad with his ex-girlfriend Deepika Padukone on-screen after Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008). The film also stars Aditya Roy Kapur ( Aashiqui 2) and Kalki Koechlin.

In the film, Ranbir Kapoor plays the character of Bunny who is charming and fun-loving, full of spirit and an indomitable spirit of adventure. He rejects mediocrity and longs to leave his life at home behind to travel, see the world and embrace the freedom of being unattached.

Audiences will see Ranbir as Bunny grow from a young student full of unconventional ambitions to a hard-working videographer on a travel show, chasing and concretizing his dreams. He embraces a modern value system and wants to be answerable to no one but himself.

In Conversation with Bollywood Reporter Sunny Malik, Ranbir Kapoor talks about the film and much more…

You came to London last time to promote Barfi! and had just wrapped up the schedule of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani in France. How does it feel like to actually be promoting the film here now?
It is really strange as for my last release Barfi!, I kick-started the promotions in London and now I have started the promotions of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani here. I hope the love I get for this film will be similar. I am really excited as it is my second time collaborating with my most favourite person in the world, Ayan Mukherji. I have immense belief in him as a person and filmmaker. I am really excited that we collaborated on a movie like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

How was your experience playing the character of Bunny after doing different roles in Rockstar and Barfi! ?Ranbir in London - YJHD
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
was a really hard film for me because I had played characters in Rockstar and Barfi! and it is easy for an actor to hide behind characters. They have certain nuisances – the way they walk and talk. In Barfi! I didn’t even speak and I feel those characters are easier to play. Now when you have somebody who is real in an urban and contemporary setting, there is so much of yourself that you have to put out there. It has to be organic and moment to moment. I feel that it’s very tricky as it’s hard to, in some ways, reflect your own personality onto a character. However, I feel if the film and my performance are appreciated, all credit must go to Ayan. He did so much of work for me as an actor and I will always be grateful for that.

Ayan Mukherji had you in mind while writing the story but could you picture yourself playing the role when you first read the script?
Ayan is a dear friend of mine and because of that, he wrote a lot of me into the film. My character is a detached boy who has this desire of wandering around the world, meet people and see different cultures. The story is basically of him coming of age. The simple philosophy of the film is that happiness is only real when it’s shared with someone or with people around you. I think it’s a beautiful philosophy to make a film on.

Ayan also said that he wrote the character of Naila Talwar keeping Deepika Padukone in mind. But you said in an interview, before Deepika was announced as the heroine, that Katrina Kaif is starring the in the film. What happened?
I don’t know what happened at that time. There are certain dates of actors that keep fluctuating and I was under the impression that he was talking to Katrina to do the film. I wasn’t aware that Ayan had written the character keeping Deepika in mind. He had not shared that with me. I am very glad though that I collaborated with Deepika. This is the perfect film for us to do together after Bachna Ae Haseeno. I have closely followed her career and have seen all her films. To see her growth as an actor and to see her success is just amazing. I had a wonderful time working with her.

There was some criticism to the trailer as fans said that one could make out the story of the film from the three-minute footage. Was that bothering you?
We have very carefully tried to blend entertainment with the kind of films that Ayan, the director, believes in. You have to do that to get the audience into theatres. You have to add a little bit of glamour and so called poppy culture. But at heart, the film is very unadulterated and very new. It is one of the newest films I have worked in and I am not saying that because it’s coming out now. I don’t have a reference to this film. It’s not like Bachna Ae Haseeno or Deepika’s Love Aaj Kal. Yes, the setting is contemporary and urban but that is the only similarity. The characters and nuances and the dynamics between all of the characters, all of that is very new. It’s very heart-warming. I feel that if the heart of a film is in the right place and there is warmth, then that’s what really matters.

Ranbir promotes Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani in London

Your character, Bunny, travels a lot in the film. Is it easy for you as an actor to travel all around the world?
My work makes me travel a lot. But besides work, I am quite lazy and if I have a few days off, I will just travel to London or New York. My job takes me to such wonderful places like Barfi! took me to Darjeeling, Rockstar took me to Prague and I shot in Delhi for a very long time. For Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani I went to Manali, Kashmir, Paris and Udaipur. I am really grateful to the kind of places my job takes me to.

You also shot with Madhuri Dixit for a special song, Ghagra.
Well, I love Madhuri. She broke my heart when she got married (laughs). The opportunity I had to work with her completes me as an actor. As the director is a dear friend, I bribed him into letting me kiss her on the cheek (laughs). It was inspiring to see her at work.

The film was supposed to release in January, then it was postponed to March and now it’s releasing on 31st May. Why were there delays?
I always believe whenever you give a film a deadline to release on a particular date, you kill the movie. A film is a piece of art. It needs to evolve and then there is editing, background music and that takes time. Sometimes you say that a film is coming out a certain date but then there are some production issues like what the correct release date is and what other films are releasing at that time. We want everyone to see the film and sometimes delays are in nobody’s hands. Sometimes you are fortunate that you get a correct release date and I think, 31st May is a great date since the IPL (Indian Premiere League) is over and most colleges have holidays. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is a movie that families will enjoy.

Everyone is going gaga over your Badtameez Dil dance moves. The music has also become very popular…
The composer, Pritam is really instrumental in the success of so many movies nowadays. He is just such a great musician. He provides so much entertainment and joy through his songs. Badtameez Dil has a swing dance and the choreographer, Remo wanted to try something new. Even the hip thrusting move, even though it was simple, was catchy and that’s what matters. People said that we are trying to emulate Shammi Kapoor. Just because I am from his family people saw the similarities. The concept of the song was that we are all getting old and we all will get old at some point in our life and let’s just enjoy our youth before that. It’s a cocktail party song and the re-entry of the character Bunny in all his friends’ life. He is just trying to infuse some laughter into people’s life.

Ranbir Kapoor in London - Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Jacqueline recently confirmed that you are doing a film, Roy, with her…
Yes, it’s directed by a childhood friend of mine. I am not the lead in the film. It stars Arjun Rampal and Jacqueline Fernandez. I have a very interesting character role and I am really looking forward to it. I will start shooting for it by the end of the year. I hope that my friend, Vicky, makes a good film.

She said that she is a big fan of yours and looks forward to learning a lot from you…
I think she is just pulling my leg (laughs).

Everyone from the film industry keeps praising you. How does that feel?
I don’t take it in because I don’t believe it. I am still struggling as an actor, inside my head. I have so much to learn from people. I can’t really be content with so much love coming my way. I have to shut it out at some point. It feels great at that moment but then you just have to switch off and focus on what you are doing.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani opens in UK cinemas on 31st May 2013.
