Irrfan bags top honour at the Oscars of the East

Irrfan receiving the awardIrrfan is widely known as one of the finest Indian actors of all time, and with little doubt. The actor who has charmed his way into the hearts of the audience and the critics alike with his powerpacked performances in films like Maqbool, Life of Pi, The Namesake, Pan Singh Tomar and more recently The Lunchbox.

Irrfan added yet another feather to his cap a few days ago buy bagging the top honours at the Asian Film Awards, more commonly known as the Oscars of the East.

Commenting on his win the actor said, “This award is considered Asia’s Oscars, which is an honour in itself. Besides, one of my favourite actors, Toni Leung Chiu Wai was also nominated in the same category for the Wong Kar Wai film The Grandmaster, this in fact made the win even more special.”

In addition, The Lunchbox director Ritesh Batra also bagged the honour for the Best Screenplay.

The Lunchbox also stars Nimrit Kaur and Nawazuddin Siddiqui and is produced by DAR Motion Pictures.

The Asian Film Awards were held on the 27th of March 2014 at Macau.

‘The Lunchbox’ continues to garner accolades

The LunchBoxAfter wowing festivals worldwide and winning hearts back home in India, The Lunchbox, Ritesh Batra’s charming debut film, continues its winning trail. It has won the Church of Iceland award at the Reykjavik International film festival, and the Best Director and Best Actor awards at saint jean de luz Film Festival (a French Festival).

The Lunchbox was also selected in the official competition section of the prestigious BFI London Film Festival.I n the 56th year of this festival, The Lunchbox, starring Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur as two people who exchange handwritten letters,  competed with some of the best films in the world including the Jesse Eisenberg-starrer The Double and the Scarlett Johansson-starrer Under the Skin. The festival also screened Steven McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave and Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity in the Gala section.

In another key development, Artifical Eye has bought the UK distribution rights of The Lunchbox.

“We acquired the film both because we love it and because we feel it will be loved by UK audiences,” says Artificial Eye Managing Director, Louisa Dent.

‘The Lunchbox’ Oscar race strengthens

The LunchBoxHaving won rave reviews and accolades across the Globe, THE LUNCHBOX directed by Ritesh Batra has now been officially selected to screen at the Telluride film festival.

 Held annually in Telluride, USA; the festival is regarded amongst the most coveted and exclusive film festivals in the world. Selecting only 24 films from across the globe, the festival is renowned for its program and the fact that most of the films selections make it to the Academy awards nominations.

“I am thrilled to be in Telluride and in a line-up that includes my favourite filmmakers the Coen brothers and Robert Redford. I hope The Lunchbox continues to bring accolades to India,” says director Ritesh Batra

Critics have referred to the festival as a springboard to the Oscars. “It’s such a great honour that The Lunchbox will be playing at Telluride. Looking at how all their past selections have made it to the Oscars only bolsters our faith in the film and its journey ahead” says Guneet Monga, Producer and CEO, Sikhya Entertainment

 With Sony Pictures Classics backing the film in USA and Canada, with a great academy awards nominations and win track record, THE LUNCHBOX seems like a on a path for the Best for Foreign films nomination.

Karan Johar who is presenting the film says, “The Lunchbox has been on a streak of amassing rave reviews and numerous accolades at various film festivals.”

Other films playing at the festival alongside The Lunchbox will include the Inside Llewyn Davis, Blue is the warmest Colour, Gravity, Nebraska, The Past and Labor Day amongst others.”

Adding to this Siddharth Roy Kapur Managing Director – Studios, Disney UTV says, “This is great news for all of us involved with the film. We believe good content transcends boundaries and with The Lunchbox reaching out to such a wide international audience already and being loved universally, we intend to ensure the same reach for the film in India.” 

The film is being readied for a 20th September release in India and is being presented by UTV, Karan Johar and DAR Motion Pictures and has been produced by Guneet Monga, Anurag Kashyap and Arun Rangachari. Co-Producers on the film include NFDC, Essel Vision, ASAP films, ROH films and Cine Mosaic.

Karan Johar to miss the Premiere of ‘The Lunch Box’

The Lunch Box is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. But Karan Johar who is presenting the film in India wont be able to make it for the festival to Toronto as he has prior commitments.The LunchBox

A source close to Karan says “Karan was excited to walk the red carpet with the entire team but unfortunately due to his commitments he wont be able to reach Toronto but his support is with the entire team.”

When contacted, Karan confirms the news saying, “I am very upset about it, but nothing is in my hands because I can’t overlook prior commitments. I have to be in Durban before heading back for the finale shoot of the dance show. But I am always there with the team in spirit. And also, I will be part of the promotions throughout India.”

The Lunchbox stars Irfan Khan, Nawazudin Siddhiqui and Nirmat Kaur. The film hits Indian theatres on September 20. The film bagged the Critics Week Viewers Choice Award at the 66th Cannes Film Festival in May this year.
