Interview: “We should start a campaign in the UK, to make me the next Indian James Bond” – Shah Rukh Khan

srk-mahiraHe is known as the biggest movie star in the world, yet not everyone in the UK knows him. Meet Shah Rukh Khan; Bollywood superstar who has appeared in over 80 Bollywood films and won 14 Filmfare Awards, India’s equivalent of the Oscars.

The Bollywood star boasts of 23 million followers on Twitter and 22 million likes on Facebook. Even over a decade ago, his movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) was the highest-grossing film of the year, ahead of James Cameron’s Titanic at Cineworld Feltham, west-London, which testaments his popularity among south-Asians living here.

Besides owning a plush house on Park Lane in London, Khan has filmed numerous movies here. He was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in Arts and Culture by the University of Bedfordshire in 2009. In 2015, he was conferred with a 2nd UK honorary doctorate degree by the University of Edinburgh, given in recognition of his success as an actor with a global reach and his outstanding record of philanthropy, altruism and humanitarianism.

However, Khan’s stardom often sees him involved in controversies. His latest release RAEES was dragged into the political tensions that erupted last year between India and Pakistan, as the leading actress of the film, Mahira Khan, is Pakistani. Political parties had threatened to attack cinemas that would screen the flick. The actor had to go and meet the head of the political party MNS in Mumbai to negotiate a safe and smooth release. Apparently, the politician demanded that the actress shall not promote the film in India in any which way and apparently, Khan agreed.

Speaking about the controversy to BollyNewsUK, he said, “There was a time controversies bothered and disturbed me. I just couldn’t understand why some of the things were happening. Then l realised, that is what I do for a living. I make and release films. A Shah Rukh Khan film is an occasion for many people. I have realised that it’s more important that families across the globe have the option to watch my movies. I now know that it’s my responsibility to make the experience of watching the film for the viewer as comfortable as possible.”

Even in 2015, his film Dilwale faced bans in India after Khan commented about “intolerance” in India and was branded “anti-National” by many. “I have realised with my film “Dilwale” (2015) that I am putting viewers at discomfort. They want to see the film but there are situations due to controversies, which make the experience awkward. In the past, I have not understood why, but people have attacked my stand on certain things. I am clear that my stand now is for the viewer to be able to go and watch my film without fear.”

“After working in the industry for twenty-five years, I think its now my job that a film reaches everyone. I’m okay with going to meet people to explain to them what the film is about and hear their opinion to make it a smooth release. I have realised that I need to do this and well in-time, not two days before the film is out. I have started the process much earlier. If people have issues, I will address them,” said Khan.

SRK, as he is often called by friends and fans, also worked with ex-porn star Sunny Leone for a special song in his new film. While Sunny has enjoyed stardom in India, this is the first time a mainstream superstar has worked with the porn star-turned-actress.

Talking about the special song, a recreated version of Bollywood hit ‘Laila Main Laila’, he said “We wanted to capture the time period, the costumes and the feel. That is why we did not go for a popular Hindi film actress. Sunny Leone is marvellous. We did not want to take a famous actress for it as it’s not meant to be an item number. In the film, the song is one of the most crucial moments.”

Khan, who owns Red Chillies Entertainment with wife Gauri Khan, has is eyes set to get into international distribution as well, after producing movies and ads in India.  “I am very clear that at Red Chillies Entertainment we want to start slowly distributing films ourselves. We have done that in India. To begin with, we have to partner with studios and ZEE is a good partner for the UK and USA for Raees. It’s easier now to get into overseas distribution. We have regular distributors and the business model has become easier. Its not for any other reason. All other distributors like Yash Raj Films, Eros International and UTV etc. are fantastic. But the main concern is that filmmaking has become more expensive. We want to market them a certain way and control how they released. We are making more than one film a year now and we know them better than studios. Dear Zindagi was only released in multiplex cinemas. We felt that this model will work for the film. If we had a distribution partner, they may have assumed that it’s a Shah Rukh Khan film and needs that kind of a release. But Dear Zindagi was not a Shah Rukh Khan film of a commercial calibre. The overseas release is very important, more so for me. My films sometimes do better overseas than domestically. That keeps us going. The overseas markets are perhaps bigger for me than for any other actor, ” said the actor.

SRK has often played negative characters throughout his career and those have often stayed the most memorable for his fans such as his portrayals in Baazigar, Darr and Don. Talking about revisiting a negative character he said, “I have a simple take on these negative characters; you can either like them or dislike them. As a character, I never try to justify them. If he is bad, he is bad. I don’t make any excuses for the character as an actor. Inherently, this character is a bit of a tragic hero. He makes some mistakes, which turn out more than what he had bargained for. He has a choice to get away with it and never be paying for his mistake, but he takes responsibility for his actions. This makes his somehow heroic, or the protagonist. I think, what people will take away from the film is that you need to take responsibility of your actions, whatever the outcome may be.”

Shah Rukh Khan was named the 2nd richest actor in the world but does not have his eyes set on Hollywood like other Bollywood exports Priyanka Chopra (Quantico, Baywatch) and Deepika Padukone (xXx – The Return of Xander Cage).

“Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone as well as others like Irrfan Khan, Om Puri and Anupam Kher have done a great job. They are opening doors for Indians in the western film industry. I am too old to take advantage of it. I’ll make films in India. But we should start a campaign in the UK to make me the next Indian James Bond. I’ll be a third generation Indian living in London, who joins the MI6,” says Khan laughing.

Priyanka to sing for ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’

Raindrop MediaInternational recording artist and actress Priyanka Chopra will mark her Bollywood singing debut in Zoya Akhtar’s forthcoming film. Until now, Priyanka Chopra was not allowed to sing in her films as she was bound by a contract with an international music label that produced her singles.

However, for Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do, the actress has lent her voice to one of the songs to go with the end credits. A source says, “Priyanka had recited some lines in Mary Kom which was a lullaby, not a proper song. In her upcoming film, she has sung a song that will be part of end credits. It is a fun composition and she really loved singing it. This is the first time that she has done playback singing for a Bollywood film.”

Before leaving for Los Angeles, the actress is said to have recorded the song in Mumbai. The music of the film has been composed by the Shankar- Ehsaan- Loy triumvirate.

The source adds, “Priyanka did record a song at Bandra studio before she went abroad. It is a solo track and has come out very well. There are also plans to shoot an accompanying video featuring Priyanka and her co-stars.”

Incidentally, back in 2005, Priyanka had declined the offer to sing the song Tinka Tinka for Karam as she wanted to concentrate on her acting career.

Interview: Parineeti Chopra talks to BollyNewsUK about studying in the UK, movies and more

Bollywood star Parineeti Chopra at Manish Malhotra Fashion Fundraiser in London for The Angeli FoundationBollywood star Parineeti Chopra spoke to BollyNewsUK ahead of walking the ramp for Manish Malhotra’s show in London last month.

You studied in Manchester before joining the film industry in Mumbai. How were your days here?
(Laughs) I still miss my days here. I love what I do right now; acting. My university days were just really special. The time I spent here was my first interim independent life experience, which I really loved. I was lucky enough to be in a great city. Manchester is very student friendly and I every time I come back, I have to go there because I have great memories of the place.

Did you have to keep it a secret that you are related to a well-known Bollywood star (Priyanka Chopra)?
All my close friends knew that I am related to Priyanka because I showed it off proudly. At least all mt best friends at University always knew it. There was not any problem. But yes, it did spread after a while and people would ask me questions about her. However, when I come back here now, it’s very different because they used to say that my sister (cousin) is an actress and today I am an actress. It’s very different but still exciting.

You are in London to walk the ramp at Manish Malhotra’s charity fundraiser for The Angeli Foundation. How did that come about?
I am one of the few lucky actresses to be associated with Manish Malhotra. I have walked for him thrice, in three different shows, in Dubai, Delhi and Mumbai. I am also associated with the Mijwan foundation in India, which also helps the girl child. Malnutrition and girl children are two causes that I am associated with, in India. When The Angeli Foundation show happened, Manish called me for it. I did not have to think about it because it is a cause I completely support and a designer I know and always works for good causes. It was also in a city that I love (laughs). I decided that I have to be here.

Bollywood star Parineeti Copra stuns audiences at Manish Malhotra Fashion Fundraiser in London for The Angeli FoundationAre nervous to walk the ramp in London?
No, I am not nervous (laughs). I am very excited. I never thought I will come back here for work. I never thought I will be recognised here. It is winter and I am wrapped up, but still there were a few people who recognised me. Last time, when I came to London in summer, it was just surprised that so many people recognised me. I used to walk these same streets four years ago in a very different world and frame of mind. Today it’s very different but positive. I thank God for that. I was living here alone and whenever I came to London it was with my friends or family. I did everything without thinking. Today, there are certain places I have to think twice about, before visiting. I have to always think about how I am dressed. But if these things would not happen, I would be very depressed. As an actor, you look for recognition. If I would not be recognised, I would be very depressed.

Ishaqzaade did not release in the UK. Were you disappointed?
Of course, you should ask YRF why they did not release it here (laughs).

An international cut was to be released in the overseas market. It has not happened so far. What is the update on that?
Frankly, I am not in a position to say what is happening with the international cut. I am aware that there was supposed to be a second release. However, with newcomers like Arjun and I, it was a huge risk to release it in the overseas market even though it was a big budget film in the same week of release as India. Hence, Aditya Chopra, Avtar ( YRF – International) and the international distribution team decided not to release it here. Why the international cut has not come out, only the international distribution team will be able to tell you (laughs). If I think selfishly, only as an actor, I would have loved it to release everywhere. The film has done extremely well in India and people abroad have managed to see it either on DVD or legally online, which is great. If there have been releases with newcomers after that, they had more confidence to release them abroad. I think, Ishaqzaade started that and I am very proud of the fact (laughs). I hope the international cut is released very soon.

The title of your next film with Sidharth Malhotra is quite fun and unique; Hasee Toh Phasee (If she smiles, she is mine)
(Laughs) Yes. They are talking about me obviously.

Sidharth and Parineeti - Hasee Toh PhaseeIt should be the other way around because you have a lovely smile.
(Laughs) So it should be him when I smile. I think, I’ll be doing that in the film (laughs). I think, titles always need to create interest because that is the only thing out there before anything else.
Everybody is saying good things about it and it fits into the film really well. I wish I could tell you more about the film but I am not allowed.

What other films are you currently doing besides Hasee Toh Phasee?
I have a three film deal with Yash Raj Films. I am currently shooting the third film, directed by Maneesh Sharma with Sushant Singh Rajput. His film Kai Po Che just released. I am shooting for the film immediately when I go back to India. I start Hassee Toh Phasee in mid-April and finish it in in July or August. I then start Shaad Ali’s film in August. There are two more films that are locked but I can’t talk about.

The film directed by Shaad Ali is with Ali Zafar right?

Yes, Ali Zafar plays the second lead but I am paired opposite Ranveer Singh. There will be two guys and me (smiles).

You turned down a film with Akshay Kumar..
Yes, that film was offered to me but it was not a script I wanted to be a part of. It was not something I wanted to do because there was not much to do for the girl. I want to work with Akshay one day because he is also one of my favourite actors. I will work with him one day.

Your cousin sister Priyanka Chopra has made her foray into music as a recording artist. I saw a video of yours singing a song from Ishaqzaade. Is singing something you want to pursue later on in your career?
You know, sometimes I love singing more than acting. I have been singing since I was three. She came into the music world in a big way. If I get an offer like hers, if that ever happens to me, I would definitely take it up. I would love to playback for myself one day. Singing is my passion.

Teri Meri Kahani

Kunal Kohli’s next, tentatively title Teri Meri Kahani has been shooting in England since last month. Leading actress Priyanka Chopra only arrived a day before the first day of the shoot, after wrapping up a cameo in Shah Rukh Khan’s RA.ONE.

Shahid Kapoor who plays the leading hero in the film was already in London for a shot vacation. The 30-year-old actor was often seen shopping around in the West End and indulging in pan-Asian noodles at restaurants.

The first UK schedule started in Stratford upon Avon on the 22nd July and was wrapped up in five days.Scenes for the movie were filmed outside town pubs, on the river, at the bandstand and outside Shakespeare’s birthplace.

Teri Neri Kahani is a story of a young couple, Krish (Shahid Kapoor) and Radha (Priyanka Chopra) who fall in love. According to Mr Bahri, the producer of the film, it was essential for them to shoot in Stratford, birth place of William Shakespeare, as references are made to him in the story.

“We came here to do a recce and as we walked into Henley Street we just knew we had to film here. Stratford as a location has never been seen before in Bollywood,” he told the Stratford upon Avon Harold, a local newspaper.

On last Saturday filming took place at the Old Thatch Tavern. The scene involved the Jab We Met actor getting ‘arrested’ and taken to a ‘police station’ (the tourist information office). Scenes were also shot at the bank of river Avon in a boat where the couple fell asleep together after an all-night party.

The Bandstand was used to film the all-night party on Monday evening and shooting continued until the early hours of Tuesday in Bards Walk. Kunal Kohli, the director of this love story also filmed some scenes outside the Birthplace of Shakespeare on Tuesday night. On Wednesday, the last day in Stratford, the crew filmed in the empty Royal Shakespeare Company’s Courtyard Theatre where both actors performed on stage portraying their roles respectively.

The cast and crew has since moved to Nottingham where they will continue their second UK schedule until the 13th of August. The actors started shooting at the prestigious University of Nottingham on Friday, the 29th July. They filmed in Nottingham and Long Eaton with Priyanka Chopra until the 8th of August. Shahid Kapoor and new actress Neha Sharma will continue filming until the 12th of August 2011, where one day of shoot will also take place in Leeds.

Most of the crew will be leaving the UK on the 13th of August 2011.

Bollywood stars hang out in London despite riots

Bollywood glitterati Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Ali Zafar, Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma descended into London a few days ago. Unbeknownst to them, the city was in its most dangerous time in decades, when riots spread across the capital.

Shah Rukh, Ranbir and Anushka arrived on the 8th of  August 2011 to attend the logo and new identity  unveiling   of Hero Motocorp (formerly known as Hero Honda). The high-profile corporate event was also attended by Oscar award-winning music composer A.R Rahman, American singer Akon and former tennis player Boris Becker.

The event was held at The O2, London on Tuesday, the 9th of August 2011. All three actors rehearsed for their speeches and performances a day before on Monday. While Ranbir and Anushka took time out to do some shopping in the West End, Shah Rukh did not leave his residence except for his rehearsal.

Ranbir Kapoor posed with bikes, King Khan performed with Akon and gave a brilliant speech and Anushka performed with several dancers to entertain the audience at the event. After attending the event, Khan met up with good pal Priyanka Chopra, who was in the UK for a film shoot.

The 7 Khoon Maaf actress wrapped up her shoot for Teri Meri Kahani in Nottingham on the same day Khan, Kapoor and Sharma arrived in London. She immediately took off for London and was there for three days. A source close to the project has informed us that the remaining schedule of the film with Shahid Kapoor and upcoming actress Neha Sharma will be wrapped up on the 12th of August in the UK. The next schedule will be in Chandighar, India.

Another source has revealed that Priyanka and Shah Rukh had meetings with the owners of Cineyug, a concert and event management company while they were in London. They have apparently agreed to do a show here soon. It might be a promotional concert that Shah Rukh is planning for his upcoming sci-fi flick Ra.One, but details are being kept under the wrap at the moment. Priyanka has since left London and started the shooting of Burfee in India.

Actor and singer Ali Zafar, who made a sensational debut with Tere Bin Laden in Bollywood has been vacationing in London too for a couple of days.

I can assure you all, that all these actors are/were safe from the riots happening in the UK. I met Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra during their stay in London. Check out these pictures:
