Interview: “I don’t know why people think it’s a crime to work with the Khans” – Kareena Kapoor Khan

Kareena Kapoor Khan in Bajrangi Bhaijaan (1)Bollywood royalty Kareena Kapoor Khan spent some quality time in London recently with beau Saif Ali Khan.

The award-winning actress will be seen on-screen with Bollywood superstar Salman Khan this Eid, 17th July, in Kabir Khan’s political drama, Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Kapoor plays the role of Rasika in the film which is produced by Salman Khan Films and released in UK cinemas by Eros International.

Taking time off her London vacation, Kareena caught up with Asian Sunday Newspaper to speak about Bajrangi Bhaijaan and much more…

You’ve been spotted by fans in London and have been taking selfies with them too. How has the annual UK holiday been this year right before the release of your next film?
I absolutely love it. You know me and London is more than home for me. Whenever I come back here, I have this feeling that I am finally home.

You also met Channing Tatum whilst in London. That picture sort of broke the internet…
(
Laughs) I think most of my selfies are breaking the internet. One of my friends took it and he is on Instagram and Twitter which is how it got out as I am not on any social media platforms.

You recently said that you are choosing films differently now compared to a few years ago. How has the process changed?
I think, I love the fact that I can be a part of blockbuster commercial movies. They have always been a part of my repertoire and my DNA. I love doing commercial masala films. I also do different films like Balki’s next directorial also starring Arjun Kapoor. My role in that film amazing. Then I will be seen in Udta Punjab which is a drama film about the drug issue in Punjab, India. I am trying to just balance it out, like always.

Kareena Kapoor Khan in Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2)Do you go by your instinct when choosing a film then?
Yes, I do go by my instinct. Sometimes it turns out right and sometimes it turns out wrong but I have no regrets. I really have to just feel what I have to do. I have always done what I wanted to do and never followed any particular rules as such.

One doesn’t really say no to a Salman Khan movie but what made you say yes to Bajrangi Bhaijaan?
(Laughs) Everybody is used to seeing Salman in films which are loaded with action and comedy. This is one Salman Khan film where the story is the hero. The story is very different. Kabir Khan makes larger-than-life commercial blockbuster films but he also makes films which have stories and a meaning. The characters in the film are all very relevant to the plot. The entire setting of the film is also very real.

Popular male actors tend to take credit for the success of blockbuster movies while female actors are sometimes not given their due. Does that worry you when you are a part of blockbusters?
Not at all and I don’t think like that. I have been a part of commercial films like 3 Idiots, Bodyguard, the Golmaal series and Singham. I don’t think anyone has said that it’s just a Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan film. Talking about Ra.One for example, if you take out the song Chammak Challo it becomes a different film. People were mostly only talking about that song. In Bodyguard people mostly spoke about the chemistry that I share with Salman Khan on-screen. In the case of 3 Idiots, people remember my scenes very well. It’s never been about it. Even back in the days such as Hema Malini in Sholay, she didn’t have the title role. Sholay was about Dharamji and Amitji. She was a part of the film and you can’t take her out of it. For me it doesn’t work like that. I don’t know why people think it’s a crime to work with the Khans. I just don’t understand why it’s such a hue and cry and trust me, everyone wants to work with them (laughs).

The film has been a bit controversial because of its reported story…
People don’t know the story. It’s such an emotional drama and a beautiful story. People are trying to make a controversy out of it, not that it matters, but people are still going to watch the film and they will still be flocking to the theatres. Once they see the film they will know how appreciative the film is to both India and Pakistan.

Kareena Kapoor Khan in Bajrangi Bhaijaan (3)How was it like to work with Salman Khan again after Bodyguard?
We have a very special relationship. When his sister became a producer for the first time with Bodyguard, I was the heroine of the film. When his brother Arbaaz Khan directed for the first time (Dabangg 2), I had a special appearance in the song Fevicol Se. Now Bajrangi Bhaijaan is Salman’s first production after working in the industry for twentyfive-years and I’m the heroine of the film. I think there is a very deep connection between the Khan’s and myself.

The soundtrack of Bajrangi Bhaijaan is already topping charts…
Pritam, the composer, has always done a spectacular job. He composed the music for Jab We Met too. The music of the film is very soulful but simultaneously you also have songs that you can dance to.

Bodyguard also released on Eid and people at a London cinema couldn’t get tickets and were seated on the floor to watch it on the first day…
Oh God, that will most likely be the case for Bajrangi Bhaijaan too because the excitement level is extremely high among our fans. The audience is expecting a good film and they want to see a film with a good story that features Salman Khan. That is something that is going to be deeply respected.

Your item song from the film Brothers, ‘Mera Naam Mary’ has just been released…
I think that it will be ten steps ahead of Fevicol Se from Dabangg 2.

Your fanclub on Twitter wants to know if you call Saif Ali Khan by his reported legal name ‘Sajid’ too?
(Laughs) No, that’s not his legal name and I don’t know where that all came from in the media. His mother thought of the name but his name is only Saif Ali Khan and thank God for that.

Interview: Ileana D’Cruz speaks about ‘Happy Ending’

Happy Ending UK ReleaseIndian film actress Ileana D’Cruz will be seen in UK cinemas this Friday, 21st November 2014, in Happy Ending. Having worked in Telugu and Tamil cinema, the actress made her foray into Hindi cinema with 2012 blockbuster Barfi! opposite Ranbir Kapoor and alongside Priyanka Chopra. The 27-year-old actress has since worked with the likes of Shahid Kapoor and Varun Dhawan and is extremely excited about her new venture, produced by Saif Ali Khan’s Illuminati Films.

Happy Ending is directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. and also stars Govinda, Saif Ali Khan, Kalki Koechlin, Ranvir Shorey, Preity Zinta and Kareena Kapoor Khan. The much awaited rom-com will release in UK cinemas through Eros International in UK cinemas.

Here the actress talks to Sunny Malik about the movie, working with Saif Ali Khan and being friendly with Kareena Kapoor Khan…

How are you feeling about your upcoming film, Happy Ending?
I am extremely excited because the film is very different from the films I have done in the past. Barfi! was completely different and Main Tera Hero was a wholly commercial film with a little over the top humour. Happy Ending is very modern. If I may say so, it has very intelligent humour. It is more casual and conversational. The acting that was required of me was very different from films like Main Tera Hero. It was strange and took a little while as it was very new to me. I am excited because I loved the way the film has shaped up. Happy Ending, I think, will appeal to Indian and overseas audiences.

How did the film come about for you?
I was very excited when I was offered the film because I have loved the films Illuminati (Saif Ali Khan’s production house) has produced. They have made very slick comedies and shot them beautifully. They promote the films really well too. The music is very important to them. I was looking forward to the doing the film without knowing the story. When I heard the script, I was pleasantly surprised. I wasn’t expecting such a good role.

IleanaTell me more about your character…
The heroine in the film is at par with the hero. It’s a very sassy role and not a typical Bollywood damsel in distress heroine. My character is an author who writes novels but doesn’t believe in them. She doesn’t believe in love or happily ever after. She is the type of girl who asks the guy just before they make out, “You aren’t going to fall in love with me, right?” There were times where I felt that I was not doing much as my character keeps a straight face a lot of times. It was a bit nerve wrecking. I am glad I waited and chose to do this film.

Saif takes a little time to open up. How was your experience interacting with him in the beginning?
I had this stupid impression that he was going to be exactly like I have seen him in his films. That was quite stupid of me considering I am part of the film industry. I was expecting a chirpy goofy guy. He was quite normal and very polite. I kept to myself on the sets because I figured that he is reserved and doesn’t like chatting too much. Unfortunately, he took that as me being incredible formal on the sets. One day we ended up talking at one of those parties we had on the sets. He came up to me and asked me why I am so aggressive and defensive? Ironically, I became very defensive and questioned him what was wrong with him as I am not defensive at all (laughs). We had a nice conversation and we just suddenly broke the ice. We got to know each other and got comfortable. It was a very good working relationship. I find it hilarious when he gets angry even if it is for two seconds. I didn’t take him too seriously, so it was good (laughs).

He also compared you to Rani and Kajol…
I was quite shocked when he said that. I take is as a very big compliment. I don’t know if I agree with him or not. They are brilliant actresses.

Kareena Kapoor Khan, who has a cameo in the film, said that you have become friends while filming in the US…
I didn’t have any scenes with her unfortunately but she spent some time in Detroit with us and we got to know each other. We bumped into each other during breakfast and it was a really nice atmosphere. We just chatted and she is aver normal person I love that about her. She has no hang-ups, is simple and I think, she liked the same about me. We got along really well. I don’t know if we are friends because we haven’t spent as much time together. We are definitely very fond of each other as people. She has handled herself very beautifully considering the many year she has been in the industry. I think, I was expecting a different person and was surprised that she is a such a lovely person. I can’t say we are friends but we are definitely friendly.

Happy Ending is out in UK cinemas on Friday, 21st November 2014.

Kareena Kapoor Khan visits Madame Tussauds London

Kareena Kapoor Madame Tussauds LondonAward winning Bollywood actress, Kareena Kapoor Khan, recently visited her staggeringly lifelike wax figure at Madame Tussauds London and gave its glamorous new look her seal of approval after donating a stunning new outfit. The figure has undergone a dazzling restyle and now wears a beautiful red sari with gold waist detailing and jewellery inspired by the outfit worn by Kareena in the film Ra.One while performing the song ‘Chammak Chalo’. Fans can visit Kareena’s figure for a limited time this summer, before it returns to Madame Tussauds Blackpool in the Autumn.

On seeing her redressed wax figure, Khan said: “The sari looks really pretty, really spectacular – and I always think that the figure’s eyes are just like mine.”

She added, “I wanted my fans to see my figure in an outfit that was known and loved from one of my films, and my favourite outfit to wear out is a sari, so I jumped at the chance to redress my Madame Tussauds figure in one. This is a moment I’ll treasure forever.”

Kareena’s figure was originally launched wearing a striking black outfit with silver jewelled embillishment. The actress gave our creative team a sitting in Mumbai, where they took hundreds of precise measurements and reference photographs, and was closely involved in styling the overall look of her figure. In all, the figure took the talented team four months to complete at a cost of £150,000.

Fans can visit Kareena’s redressed figure in our incredibly popular Bollywood area, alongside four other major names in Indian cinema – Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Hrithik Roshan and Amitabh Bachchan. The world famous attraction recently gave fans the opprtunity to choose which female Bollywood star (between Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone) will be honoured with a wax figure next year via an online public poll, and will announce the results soon.

Q&A: Alia Bhatt talks about ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’

Bollywood sweetheart, Alia Bhatt, who also made her big-screen debut in the Karan Johar production Student of the Year and received widespread critical acclaim for her role in Highway and 2 States, convincingly plays the main female protagonist, sealing her position as one of Bollywood’s most sought after leading ladies.

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is directed by debutant director Shashank Khaitan and is produced by award-winning film-maker Karan Johar, whose banner Dharma Productions recently brought you such hit films as 2 States and Hasee Toh Phasee.

How would you describe ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’?
Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is the quintessential romantic story. No matter how unromantic you may be in your personal life, it’s a film that we can all relate to. Everyone always wants their love story to be a ‘story’. I would call it a tribute to the typical filmy love story.

How would you describe your character in the film?
Kavya Pratap Singh is a simple girl, and doesn’t have many wants or needs in life. She definitely clashes with the title character, ‘Humpty’, because she’s a lot more practical and no nonsense, even though she sometimes likes to dream big.

Alia Bhatt - HSDKYour character in the film is a huge fan of Kareena Kapoor. You have often been compared to her in real life, so would you consider yourself a fan?
Like my character, I am a huge fan of Kareena [Kapoor] and I definitely consider her one of my biggest inspirations. I find the comparisons very flattering, but not at all true. There is only one Kareena Kapoor out there, and I think it’s very important to carve out my own niche in the industry.

She also mentions how she wants to wear Kareena Kapoor’s wedding dress. Are these things you think about regularly in your personal life?
I think every girl dreams of their ideal wedding, and would like to get married in the grandest way possible. When we see our favourite actresses in these beautiful gowns, it is only natural that we start thinking about our own wedding and what we’ll wear on our special day.

Is it true that you were the inspiration behind the posters of the film?
Yes, that’s actually something I’m quite proud of. During filming, we were constantly saying that we needed to do something innovative for the posters, and I was very fond of taking selfies at the time, so I suggested we implement that. At first, people weren’t fond of the idea but as time went on, they definitely warmed to the idea. I think everyone was delighted with the end result, and it made for a fun and fresh poster.

Your career has had a very interesting trajectory, with every film being different from the other. How do you choose your roles?
When it comes to the roles I choose, I am not very calculating. It’s important for me to stay versatile and not be typecast into any particular role.  I hope with Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, people continue to see a different side of me.

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania – A Reliance Entertainment release in the overseas markets, in cinemas 11thJuly 2014.

Anubhav Sinha Interview on Ikonz

Anubhav Sinha made his mark in Bollywood ten years ago as a director with ‘Tum Bin’. After directing action films like ‘Dus’ and ‘Cash’, the 46-year-old filmmaker started to work on his most ambitious film ‘Ra.One’ with Shah Rukh Khan.
Sinha has also written the story of this Sci-Fi Indian film which will show Khan playing a superhero and Kareena Kapoor, the leading lady, a mother on screen for the first time. Set in London and Goa, ‘Ra.One’ is this year’s most anticipated film and Khan is leaving no stone unturned for promotions. Anubhav Sinha took out some time to speak about the film to Bollywood Reporter Sunny Malik for Ikonz .

What is the unique selling point of ‘Ra.One’?
The story is the unique selling point of my film. The story happens to be about a superhero, so it becomes more exciting and engaging. At the end of the day, the USP of any film should be the story.

Tell me a little bit about the story of ‘Ra.One’.
The film is about a father and his son and how the son finds his father, how he conceptually finds his father and his relationship with him. I can’t tell you more about the story right now.

You also wrote the story of ‘Ra.One’. How did that come about and where did you draw your inspiration from, or was it written from personal experiences?
I don’t instinctively remember the image. I don’t know if it was a movie commercial or print commercial, I don’t know what exactly it was, but it was an image of a child controlling a human being with a remote. I found that really interesting and I ended up writing a story around it and that became ‘Ra.One’.

How did Shah Rukh Khan come on board?
When I wrote the story, I realised that I need someone who would perhaps believe in a film like this, who would believe in the vision of a superhero film in India. I spoke to him about the film and we worked on it. A few years later we started making the movie.

The film was originally to be shot in Miami but was relocated to London. What happened and did you have to make many changes to the story?
Yes, we did a technical recce (location scouting) in Miami and suddenly the budget started to seem out of control. At that point, Shah Rukh decided to recalculate the budget and that would have meant postponing the shooting there which would have resulted in serious weather issues for the filming. The whole plan of shooting outdoors had to be changed and we needed to change the country and we decided on London.

While you were shooting in London, you laughed off reports of the film being sold for distribution at a certain price. Do you think these rumours helped the film in terms of promotion or created too many expectations?
There is no way we could have controlled the expectations of the film because Shah Rukh was going to release a film of his after a gap of eighteen months, then he is also playing a superhero and then the whole of myths that get associated with such films. We were also aware that the film will have massive expectations. I agree with you that these things should make you nervous because people go into the theatre with a lot of expectations. In terms of what you have to deliver, you must do your best to go beyond it. We have tried to do that.

You are not attending any promotional events at the moment. Are you still busy with post production of your film?
I am busy 24/7. There are three to four days more and then I am going to be jobless (laughs).

There were two units shooting in London for a few days. Karan Johar was overseeing the filming at Hardwick House in Ham and you were shooting action scenes in Temple (Central London). Why was that necessary?
The filming at Battersea Power Station was extended by a few days because of the rain and we ran into the schedule of the next planned location. The need for two units came up and fortunately Karan Johar was in town and I requested him to take charge of the second unit.

Which according to you is the most interesting character in ‘Ra.One’?
At the risk of sounding pompous, I am a righteous guy (laughs), so I like heroes more than villains.
Villains are very interesting but G.One is very intriguing to me.

How was your experience working with Shah Rukh Khan?
It was fantastic. I have worked with a very wide range of actors. I have worked with big stars, newcomers and now Shah Rukh Khan. It was one of the best experiences I had.

How was it working with Kareena Kapoor and why did you decide that she should be playing the leading female character?
Kareena is a brilliant actress. There is a very wide range of emotions that her character goes through. I am a big fan of Kareena Kapoor as an audience and I really like her and wanted her to be in my movie.

Recently filmed Bollywood productions attracted huge crowds in London. Did that happen to you when you were filming Ra.One last year here in the capital?
We feared that something like that would happen but fortunately most of the times we were shooting stunts, chasing sequences and indoors. We were mostly in secured zones and for safety reasons those roads were blocked off and nobody could get there.
But obviously, there used to be some fans around but really small in numbers. We had a very large security system making sure that G.One’s look does not get clicked.

Why did you decide to get Akon on your OST?
When we decided to approach Akon, it was the tune that made us chose him. When Vishal and Shekhar, my music composers, played me the tune we were thinking about who should sing it.
One of them said that this is so much of an Akon song and I told them that we should get him to sing it then. I asked Shah Rukh Khan and he said that he will try and he delivered. It was not intended that we are bringing Akon on board to add value. That just happened.

Which is your favourite song from the OST?
That is the toughest question you have asked so far. I think, Stand By Me (Dildaara) is my most favourite song.

What about your bet that the song ‘Criminal’ from your Soundtrack is going to be bigger than ‘Chammak Challo’?
Shah Rukh reminded me last night and asked me whether I have lost the bet yet or not. I told him no, let the film release. I love both songs but regarding the bet, I have to pay him less and he pays me much more (laughs).

You are holding a Premiere in London. How are you feeling about it?
I love London. I don’t know why, I am just trying to figure out the reasons why I love it, but I just do.
Being there for a Premiere of a film that I have made over six years is ideal. I will be there with my friends, my Indian team, my UK friends and crew members and I will have a lot of fun.

Ra.One, produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and distributed by Eros International Ltd will premiere in the UK at The O2 Cineworld in London on the 25th October 2011 followed by a nation-wide release on the following day.

Imran Khan Shares his experience about Dharma Production

Imran Khan is completely impressed with Karan Johar and Dharma productions. His upcoming movie with the production house, ‘Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu’ featuring Kareena Kapoor has already created a buzz in the filmy duniya.

They just shot for a still photo shoot for the publicity of the movie. Without a doubt they looked fabulous together. He is all praises for his co-star for her extreme brilliance, on screen as well as off screen.

After ‘I Hate Luv Storys’, Imran is glad to be back with Dharma Productions. Karan’s support and belief in him at the lowest point of his career has been the limelight for him. He was offered ‘I Hate Luv Storys’ when he was facing a rough patch, the actor recollects. Post the shoot of the movie the bond between him Karan and Punit Malhotra (director of IHLS) has grown stronger.

Imran started shooting for the film after the release of ‘Break Ke Baad’ in 2010. Set in Las Vegas the film shows a span of five to six days in Imran’s life when Kareena Kapoor enters his life and everything changes. Speaking to me about this film and co-star Kapoor, Khan said: “I pushed for her to be in the film. Shakun Batra, the director, is a good friend of mine. He was a second assistant director on ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’. I always knew that He will make a good director and He was writing the script keeping me in mind. I think, he always had Kareena Kapoor in mind while writing the female character. The first time I heard it, I also told him that it has got to be Kareena.”

Dharma Productions plans on setting new records with the much anticipated and awaited movie of 2012. The film is set to release around Valentines Day 2012.

RA.ONE Music Launch

An Epic music launch – Ra.One is here to stay!

The Ra.One music launch is definitely one that is not going to be forgotten very soon by the industry and audiences alike. No doubt that the music of Ra.One has been one of the most highly-anticipated albums of the year, however the sheer scale of grandeur and enigmatic presence on the stage of the stars has left everyone’s jaws dropping.

Shah Rukh Khan was at his usual charming best as he joked and said, “Superman ko apna naam Karan Johar rakhna chahiye.”  He grooved with Kareena Kapoor, his female co-star in the movie, to the latest chartbuster from the movie Chammak Challo, and while Kareena did look stunning in a blood-red sari, all eyes were eagerly looking out for the well-kept secret that is the character of Ra.One, which is being portrayed by Arjun Rampal..And quite an entry it was!

Karan Johar, Shah Rukh Khan’s closest friend in the industry, launched the music album while the film has been dedicated by SRK to the late Yash Johar.

Though we faced an unexpected delay in the start the event,it was probably because of the rains affecting certain portions of the set, built in an open area. And later, live glimpses of the event were shown, as promised, on the official YouTube channel. If the glimpses didn’t quite please you, you must watch the entire event to be aired on national televisionvery soon… the funny SRK on-liners & the dance performances will definitely impress you. And national broadcasting means that not only the media, but also the entire fans base can become a part of the celebrations.

YouTube views and comments for the event were at an all-time high, and Ra.One’s official Twitter handle even amassed 300+ followers in a matter of 2 hours.

The official release of Ra.One’s music album has truly been the perfect gift for all at the end of this festive season.  It truly was worth the wait!

Being their bodyguard for the day, has excited the public and their fans are going crazy for this contest. In just few days, thousands of people from across India have applied to become Salman’s and Bebo’s bodyguards.

It seems that they don’t want to lose out on a chance of becoming their favorite actors bodyguards for a day and to travel with them to all the places they visit within the fan’s city. The selected person, in each city, will be like a shadow to the stars and will get to touch and feel the world of glamour intimately.

Bebo does a “Mandakani” for Bodyguard

The Bollywood industry had recently turned upside down with the whole dilemma of whether Kareena Kapoor has agreed to do the Mandakini act for a film or not.

Will the Kapoor girl do the bathing act that still remains fresh in audiences’ minds was a question that had kept many under deep curiosity.Well the actress has finally come out of secret doors and did the most famous ‘Mandakini’ act for ‘Bodyguard’ along with the hunk Salman Khan. The song is a love track between Kareena and Salman titled ‘Teri Meri Prem Kahaani’ , shot in Film City over three days – last Saturday Sunday and Monday.Sources from the set revealed that Kareena was seen donning a beautiful white saree for the first time specially this act, she gracefully danced under the rain water and was very comfortable performing the choreography of the song, which was done by Vaibhavi Merchant.

Not only that, Bebo had few changes in other sarees as well but she absolutely loved her white saree look. Sources from the set couldn’t stop talking about her look in the saree under the rain water and how she perfectly matched Mandakini.

Atul Agnihotri says, “we shot the love song ‘Teri Meri Prem Kahaani’ with Salman and Kareena recently. Kareena looked absolutely stunning in the saree. The audiences will surely enjoy the song and fall in love with her all over again.”

Bodyguard is touted as this season’s biggest film; after ‘Wanted’ (2009 Eid release) and ‘Dabangg’ (2010 Eid release) Salman’s ‘Bodyguard’ is all geared up to release this Eid on 31st August, 2011.

‘Bodyguard’ is a romantic action film starring Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor. Directed by Siddique, the film is a remake of the director’s 2010 Malayalam film of the same name.
