Interview: “I don’t know why people think it’s a crime to work with the Khans” – Kareena Kapoor Khan

Kareena Kapoor Khan in Bajrangi Bhaijaan (1)Bollywood royalty Kareena Kapoor Khan spent some quality time in London recently with beau Saif Ali Khan.

The award-winning actress will be seen on-screen with Bollywood superstar Salman Khan this Eid, 17th July, in Kabir Khan’s political drama, Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Kapoor plays the role of Rasika in the film which is produced by Salman Khan Films and released in UK cinemas by Eros International.

Taking time off her London vacation, Kareena caught up with Asian Sunday Newspaper to speak about Bajrangi Bhaijaan and much more…

You’ve been spotted by fans in London and have been taking selfies with them too. How has the annual UK holiday been this year right before the release of your next film?
I absolutely love it. You know me and London is more than home for me. Whenever I come back here, I have this feeling that I am finally home.

You also met Channing Tatum whilst in London. That picture sort of broke the internet…
Laughs) I think most of my selfies are breaking the internet. One of my friends took it and he is on Instagram and Twitter which is how it got out as I am not on any social media platforms.

You recently said that you are choosing films differently now compared to a few years ago. How has the process changed?
I think, I love the fact that I can be a part of blockbuster commercial movies. They have always been a part of my repertoire and my DNA. I love doing commercial masala films. I also do different films like Balki’s next directorial also starring Arjun Kapoor. My role in that film amazing. Then I will be seen in Udta Punjab which is a drama film about the drug issue in Punjab, India. I am trying to just balance it out, like always.

Kareena Kapoor Khan in Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2)Do you go by your instinct when choosing a film then?
Yes, I do go by my instinct. Sometimes it turns out right and sometimes it turns out wrong but I have no regrets. I really have to just feel what I have to do. I have always done what I wanted to do and never followed any particular rules as such.

One doesn’t really say no to a Salman Khan movie but what made you say yes to Bajrangi Bhaijaan?
(Laughs) Everybody is used to seeing Salman in films which are loaded with action and comedy. This is one Salman Khan film where the story is the hero. The story is very different. Kabir Khan makes larger-than-life commercial blockbuster films but he also makes films which have stories and a meaning. The characters in the film are all very relevant to the plot. The entire setting of the film is also very real.

Popular male actors tend to take credit for the success of blockbuster movies while female actors are sometimes not given their due. Does that worry you when you are a part of blockbusters?
Not at all and I don’t think like that. I have been a part of commercial films like 3 Idiots, Bodyguard, the Golmaal series and Singham. I don’t think anyone has said that it’s just a Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan film. Talking about Ra.One for example, if you take out the song Chammak Challo it becomes a different film. People were mostly only talking about that song. In Bodyguard people mostly spoke about the chemistry that I share with Salman Khan on-screen. In the case of 3 Idiots, people remember my scenes very well. It’s never been about it. Even back in the days such as Hema Malini in Sholay, she didn’t have the title role. Sholay was about Dharamji and Amitji. She was a part of the film and you can’t take her out of it. For me it doesn’t work like that. I don’t know why people think it’s a crime to work with the Khans. I just don’t understand why it’s such a hue and cry and trust me, everyone wants to work with them (laughs).

The film has been a bit controversial because of its reported story…
People don’t know the story. It’s such an emotional drama and a beautiful story. People are trying to make a controversy out of it, not that it matters, but people are still going to watch the film and they will still be flocking to the theatres. Once they see the film they will know how appreciative the film is to both India and Pakistan.

Kareena Kapoor Khan in Bajrangi Bhaijaan (3)How was it like to work with Salman Khan again after Bodyguard?
We have a very special relationship. When his sister became a producer for the first time with Bodyguard, I was the heroine of the film. When his brother Arbaaz Khan directed for the first time (Dabangg 2), I had a special appearance in the song Fevicol Se. Now Bajrangi Bhaijaan is Salman’s first production after working in the industry for twentyfive-years and I’m the heroine of the film. I think there is a very deep connection between the Khan’s and myself.

The soundtrack of Bajrangi Bhaijaan is already topping charts…
Pritam, the composer, has always done a spectacular job. He composed the music for Jab We Met too. The music of the film is very soulful but simultaneously you also have songs that you can dance to.

Bodyguard also released on Eid and people at a London cinema couldn’t get tickets and were seated on the floor to watch it on the first day…
Oh God, that will most likely be the case for Bajrangi Bhaijaan too because the excitement level is extremely high among our fans. The audience is expecting a good film and they want to see a film with a good story that features Salman Khan. That is something that is going to be deeply respected.

Your item song from the film Brothers, ‘Mera Naam Mary’ has just been released…
I think that it will be ten steps ahead of Fevicol Se from Dabangg 2.

Your fanclub on Twitter wants to know if you call Saif Ali Khan by his reported legal name ‘Sajid’ too?
(Laughs) No, that’s not his legal name and I don’t know where that all came from in the media. His mother thought of the name but his name is only Saif Ali Khan and thank God for that.

Kareena Kapoor Khan visits Madame Tussauds London

Kareena Kapoor Madame Tussauds LondonAward winning Bollywood actress, Kareena Kapoor Khan, recently visited her staggeringly lifelike wax figure at Madame Tussauds London and gave its glamorous new look her seal of approval after donating a stunning new outfit. The figure has undergone a dazzling restyle and now wears a beautiful red sari with gold waist detailing and jewellery inspired by the outfit worn by Kareena in the film Ra.One while performing the song ‘Chammak Chalo’. Fans can visit Kareena’s figure for a limited time this summer, before it returns to Madame Tussauds Blackpool in the Autumn.

On seeing her redressed wax figure, Khan said: “The sari looks really pretty, really spectacular – and I always think that the figure’s eyes are just like mine.”

She added, “I wanted my fans to see my figure in an outfit that was known and loved from one of my films, and my favourite outfit to wear out is a sari, so I jumped at the chance to redress my Madame Tussauds figure in one. This is a moment I’ll treasure forever.”

Kareena’s figure was originally launched wearing a striking black outfit with silver jewelled embillishment. The actress gave our creative team a sitting in Mumbai, where they took hundreds of precise measurements and reference photographs, and was closely involved in styling the overall look of her figure. In all, the figure took the talented team four months to complete at a cost of £150,000.

Fans can visit Kareena’s redressed figure in our incredibly popular Bollywood area, alongside four other major names in Indian cinema – Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Hrithik Roshan and Amitabh Bachchan. The world famous attraction recently gave fans the opprtunity to choose which female Bollywood star (between Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone) will be honoured with a wax figure next year via an online public poll, and will announce the results soon.

Ajay Devgn reprises action hero role in ‘Singham Returns’

Singham Returns Bollywood’s leading man Ajay Devgn is set to reprise his iconic role as the charismatic and fearless Inspector Bajirao Singham in this Summer’s big-screen action offering Singham Returns, which releases worldwide on Indian Independence Day, 15th August 2014 through Reliance Entertainment.

Audiences will be treated to a feast of fist-fights, fanciful footwork and fantastic stunts, as Ajay resumes the role he first made world-famous in 2011, this time also adding a producer credit to his impressive cache of career highs together with Reliance Entertainment.

Singham Returns pays homage to the original blockbuster film ‘Singham’, which re-defined the action genre in Indian cinema with its stellar narrative of good versus evil, sensational stunt sequences and perfectly choreographed action. Singham Returns imbibes the core themes of India’s freedom, encapsulating such values as heroism, daring feats, determination and perseverance, as the ever-brave Inspector Bajirao Singham takes on the establishment to rid his city of corruption and deceit in the upper echelons of society.

Singham Returns 2The second instalment of the Singham brand once again reunites action film supremo Rohit Shetty (Golmaal series, Chennai Express) with award-winning actor and producer Ajay Devgn (Golmaal, Singham, Omkara) in what promises to be the must-see family ‘masala entertainer’ of the summer. Joining the successful pairing of Ajay Devgn and director Rohit Shetty is leading lady and fellow Golmaal 2 and 3 co-star Kareena Kapoor Khan (3 Idiots). Other notable performances come from internationally-renowned actor Anupam Kher (Bend It Like Beckham, Silver Linings Playbook) and Amol Gupte (Taare Zameen Par).

Complementing the all-star line-up is a well-written script by acclaimed writing duo Sajid-Farhad, who penned the original script for Singham as well as writing other hit films, such as Housefull 2 and Bol Bachchan. The rousing musical score is expertly put together by Ankit Tiwari, perfectly nuancing every finite detail of this gripping and intense film.

Singham Returns is produced by Reliance Entertainment and releases in UK cinemas on 15th August 2014.

Interview: Kareena and Imran talk about ‘Gori Tere Pyaar Mein’

Gori Tere Pyaar Mein in London (12)Bollywood royalty Kareena Kapoor Khan and Imran Khan flew down to London to promote their upcoming film Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, directed by Punit Malhotra and produced by Karan Johar.

Synospsis: Sriram Venkat (Imran Khan) is the most shallow guy on earth who doesn’t value relationships, family, friends, life or the country. Not necessarily in that order. Because he couldn’t care less about the order. This makes him the clear ‘black’ sheep of the family.

At some point this shallow man begins to narrate the story of the crazy relationship he shared with Dia Sharma. His ex-girlfriend. A firebrand social activist who wanted to change the world. An attraction which was physical initially but then got emotional and finally veered into complex territories resulting in a clash of ideologies and mindsets which drove them apart. Bitterly. Sriram believed that charity begins and ends at home. Whilst Dia felt that you have to be the change that you want to bring about.

However, Sriram realizes that he is not over Dia and still loves her and that she is the best change that ever happened… and will happen to his life.

But Dia has moved on and is now in an obscure village in Gujarat called Jhumli.

Sriram lands up in Jhumli to take his love back… But Dia refuses to return with him. Frustrated and faced with the ultimate challenge, Sriram realizes the only way he can impress upon Dia to come back with him is by making Jhumli independent. By helping others… something he is just not accustomed to do. This is the biggest irony of his life.

What he doesn’t bargain for are the various road blocks he might face, in the face of politics, corruption and clueless villagers. But the biggest hurdle he faces eventually is himself. His own moral fabric which isn’t upto the challenge he has undertaken.

Will Sriram be able to win back his love? Will he be able to bring about the change in Jhumli as well as in himself??? This is the story of a boy and his struggle to cross a bridge… a bridge that bridges the love and gap between two people.

The film is set to release in UK cinemas on 22nd November and the two stars caught up with Bollywood reporter Sunny Malik to talk about the film and much more…

Imran, you have flown in from New York where you were promoting Gori Tere Pyaar Mein. How did it go?
Imran: It was mad. It turns out New York is not on route from Mumbai, you go way past into a different time zone (laughs). I slept through all of the interviews and just when I got into it, I had to leave for London.

Kareena, you were in Beirut for Arabs Got Talent and your fans there were pretty excited to see you perform.
Kareena: We had lots of fun. They were very warm. I think that is their culture. They are loud and warm, which is nice as they are very much like us.

Imran: Basically, they are Indians (laughs).

Gori Tere Pyaar Mein in London (5)You were honoured at the House of Commons by the British Government and Asian Sunday Newpaper. How did that go?
Kareena: It was great. I am thankful to all of my British Asian fans who made this possible. I am sure they won’t let me down with my new movie as well.

The title of your new film, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, is quite unique. How did that come about?
Imran: I honestly don’t know.
Kareena: I guess, because we are both fair. What else could it be (laughs)?
Imran: The script that Punit had written was called Jhumli. That is the name of the village where Kareena goes in the film and I follow her. The script that I signed on was called Jhumli and when we started filming, we had no title.

Kareena: I am just glad that the film is not called Jhumli (laughs).

Your director Punit Malhotra was an AD on Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and Imran worked with him on his directorial debut I Hate Luv Stories. How was your experience working with him on Gori Teri Pyaar Mein?
Imran: Obviously, it was very different for Kareena from the first time she worked with Punit. At that time the power equation was a little different (laughs).

Kareena: So you agree that you guys bullied me?
Imran: That is not true. He was a clapper boy on that film and now he has been bumped up slightly (laughs). Punit and I were basically two love sick puppies running behind Bebo. We were both running around after her seeking her approval and affection (laughs).

Gori Tere Pyaar Mein in London (7)You both have worked with Dharma Productions in the past. How would you describe your association with Karan Johar’s production house?
Imran: I Hate Luv Stories came to me when I was sitting at home for eight-nine month without work and then Karan offered me the film. I owe him a lot.

Kareena, you are sort of an in-house heroine for the banner.

Kareena: It’s like home turf for me. Karan Johar is like a brother to me. Apart from working together, we are mentally connected. He is my brother, best friend and confidante. We go beyond having a professional equation.

I was surprised to see the heroine of Punit Malhotra’s second film as a social activist. What was your reaction when you first heard the script?
Kareena: Dia is a social activist but don’t forget it’s a Karan Johar film so it as socially activist as it can be (laughs).

Imran: Don’t expect Satyagraha (laughs).
Kareena: I mean she dances on Chingam Chibake and Tooh. She is a modern girl of today. She has her ideologies and it’s a lot of fun.

There is a funny dialogue you say in the film about the Tomatino Festival that has become famous in Bollywood after Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara.
Kareena: That entire scene is actually quite good.

Imran: You have seen the funny part of it. It’s actually a very intense and dramatic scene.

Gori Tere Pyaar Mein in London (9)Imran, you usually ask directors to make changes to their scripts before you sign their films. Did you do the same with this film?
Imran: It was a long journey. Punit’s initial draft of the story was of two guys who go to this village to woo these two girls back. Funnily enough, he wanted me and Saif Ali Khan to play the two roles. Imagine what fun that set would be. At a very early stage, it wasn’t working for him so he cut out the second storyline and made it about one boy and one girl. I gave Punit a hard time. I really liked the first half which is more of a rom-com but didn’t really like the second half where my character goes to win Dia back to a village. I didn’t understand the whole point about the bridge. I was settling for less but Punit stuck with it and made it better.

The audience now looks at films differently. People constantly want to see something new. How is this film different from other rom-coms you have done?
Imran: That is what the second half of the film adds. I swear, if Punit had listened to me and just made the film in the space of the first half, it would have been a very mediocre film.

Imran, in I Hate Luv Stories your character was largely based on Punit Malhotra. How much of him will we see in this film?
Kareena: Sriram is completely like Punit.

Imran: I am pretty much playing the same character again. Sriram is not that different from Jay of I Hate Luv Stories. There is always a lot of Punit in his films (laughs).

Gori Tere Pyaar Mein in London (3)Kareena, who was his inspiration for your character?
Imran: There was a girl…

Kareena: Yes, I think, there was a girl whom he actually went after to.
Imran: Maybe not to a village but I feel that there was a girl like that (laughs).

The music is being liked by audiences…
Kareena: I like Shake that Tooh and Dhat Teri Ki. They are both wild numbers and fun. You just want to get up and shake your tooh.

Were you apprehensive about dancing to a song like Tooh because of its lyrics?
Kareena: No, it’s a sweet song. The atmosphere of a Punjabi wedding is like that.
Imran: People are taking these things too seriously.

On ‘A date with Ek Main aur Ekk Tu’, Imran you said that you wanted to compare your ‘Tooh’ with Saif Ali Khan and Kareena will decide who has a better one. Did that ever happen?
Kareena: Oh, we still have to do that.

Imran: I think, Saif is freaking out because he knows he can’t win it. He is backing down from the challenenge (laughs).
Kareena: Don’t be so sure. You both can’t win to me (laughs).

Imran and Kareena to promote ‘GTPM’ in London

Gori Tere Pyaar Mein UK ReleaseImran Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan are set to visit London to promote their upcoming film, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, this month.

Leading international film and entertainment company Reliance Entertainment has joined forces with Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions to release this year’s must-see romantic comedy with a twist – Gori Tere Pyaar Mein (My Fair Lady, In Your Love). The urban-rural ‘rom-com’ brings love, loss and laughter together in one feel-good tale set in the picturesque village of Jhumli in Gujarat, India.

The film stars some of Bollywood’s brightest stars and veteran talent, including heartthrob Imran Khan and favourite leading lady Kareena Kapoor as well as veteran star Anupam Kher. Gori Tere Pyaar Mein is directed by popular filmmaker Punit Malhotra (I Hate Luv Storys) and has a vibrant, foot-tapping musical score by acclaimed composing duo Vishal–Shekhar.

Imran Khan plays Sriram Venkat, an extremely shallow man who doesn’t value his relationships, family, friends, life or his country, making him the ‘black sheep’ of his family. His world is turned upside down when he meets firebrand social activist Dia Sharma (Kareena Kapoor) and he begins to narrate the story of his tumultuous and unconventional relationship with the ‘love of his life’ the beautiful and kind-hearted Dia. The audience gets to delve into the psyche of Sriram to find out how the purely physical attraction between the two lovers turns into a deeper emotional connection and then disintegrates due to a clash of ideologies and mindsets.

However, once Sriram comes out of his selfish stupor, he realises that Dia is the only woman for him and sets about winning her heart back by any means necessary. He follows her to the remote village of Jhumli, which is inhabited by all manner of eccentric and colourful oddball characters, and life soon takes a surprising turn for Sriram when he learns that in life there is no better feeling then helping others.

Will Sriram win over his true love Dia? You’ll have to watch and find out!

Gori Tere Pyaar Mein is produced by Dharma Productions. Reliance Entertainment distributes Gori Tere Pyaar Mein in UK cinemas on 22nd November 2013.

Hrithik and Kareena to star in Karan Johar’s ‘Shuddhi’

Heroine - Kareena Kapoor There have been speculations about the star cast of Shuddhi for a long time now. Finally Hrithik and Kareena have been finalized for the role.

The film will be directed by Karan Malhotra, director of Agneepath, and produced by Karan Johar.

Says KJo, “I’m excited to see Hrithik and Kareena back after 12 years.”

“When Karan (Malhotra) came to me with Shuddhi, his desire was to cast Hrithik and Kareena. I spoke to both of them and they were happy to be on board. The film is an intense love story and because it has a reincarnation theme, he has written a script that is dramatic and outstanding,” said Johar.

“Also, such a theme requires actors who can bring the desired intensity. To me, it is really an important casting. But I don’t look at it as a coup. Kareena is beautiful, talented and a powerhouse performer. And Hrithik, well, what can I say? He can melt a nation just with his eyes,” added the director.
