‘Padmaavat’ protests continue in India, UK release unaffected

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bollywood epic Padmaavat, set to release in UK cinemas by Paramount Pictures UK on 25th Jan, is still facing protests in India.

After death treats were issued to lead actress Deepika Padukone and Bhansali, followed by multiple Indian states banning the film and the local Certification Board in India refusing to classify the film, Padmaavat was postponed.

After five cuts and a name change from ‘Padmavati’ to ‘Padmaavat’ the film will finally get a general release this week.

Based on 16th century Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s epic poem Padmavat, the movie faced resistance from its early stages due to rumour-mongering.

The film that showcases the valor of Rani Padmavati, Maharawal Ratan Singh and the famed Rajput ethos of honour, bravery and sacrifice, has from early last year sparked a furor in India inciting violence against the makers and cinemas showing the film.

The Supreme Court in India earlier this week ruled that all states must show the film. The protestors disagree saying that Padukone’s portrayal in the film ‘disrespects’ Rani Padmavati. Multiple cinema chains have already been vandalised.

Karni Sena, a Rajput caste extremist group, last year threatened UK citizens and encouraged their followers to burn down UK cinemas screening the film. By doing so, they incited violence and committed hate crime, an offense in Britain. Rajput groups in the UK also decided to protest the film, albeit without violence.

Also starring Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, the film has been classified by the British Board of Film Classification twice, the original and edited version, both with a 12A rating.

The Mayor of London’s office informed BollyNewsUK that the Mayor‘s Office of Policing and Crime has been alerted following the threats.

The Home Office stated “The UK Government will not tolerate any groups who spread hate or deliberately raise community fears and tensions by bringing disorder and violence to our towns and cities and the police have comprehensive powers to deal with such activities.”

Cineworld Cinemas PLC, the second largest cinema operator in Europe, who also control the 60 percent of the UK Bollywood market stated, “At Cineworld we show a diverse range of films to cater to all tastes and preferences, so we look forward to releasing an edited version of Padmaavat on 25 January at our cinemas.

They added, “As always, we take security very seriously and have rigorous procedures in place to protect our customers.”

Paramount Pictures UK will release Padmaavat (Hindi) in UK cinemas from 25th January 2017 in 2D, 3D and at selected sites in IMAX 3D.

An ‘85-year-old’ Rishi Kapoor in ‘Kapoor & Sons’

If one says that Rishi Kapoor is a perfectionist then that will be an underrated sentence. Rishi Kapoor spent five hours every day for a month on make up for his new look in his upcoming film.

The Kapoor actor is not at all shying away from experimenting with his looks. The actor is playing an 85 year old grouchy, bullying old man in his upcoming film, Kapoor & Sons and this is what he’s going to look like.

According to a source, “Greg Cannom is a Hollywood special makeup effects artist done make-up for him. Cannom has been nominated for nine Academy Awards and has won three times for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button ( 2008), Mrs Doubtfire ( 1993) and Dracula ( 1992). He has also been nominated for seven Saturn Awards and received one.”

During the shoot, he had to sit for five hours every day for almost a month and he had to wake up at 5 am. He is a drinking man and people say he has no patience, but for him to wake up early every day and sit for five hours straight was a bit

“When Karan (Johar) and the director Shakun (Batra) came to meet me, I suggested that they take Cannom because I had heard of him. I was not sure about this suggestion being agreed upon since it would be a costly affair, but Karan agreed even though he knew that this would cost him around Rs 1.5 to Rs 1.75 crore,” said Rishi Kapoor.

“Shakun and I met up with Cannom and discussed the look and we decided that it would be a mix of Rishi Kapoor and A K Hangal’s look”, added the actor.

Director Shakun further added, “Rishiji’s character is extremely integral to the storyline. Since he is playing a grandfather, we wanted him to look the part.”

Kapoor & Sons will release in UK cinemas through 20th Century Fox on 18th March 2016.

BTown’s freshest couple Sooraj Pancholi – Athiya Shetty is now contending for the IT couple of Bollywood. Believe it or not but the duo are making heads turn wherever they go. Ever since the trailer released and both started with their promotions, onlookers have always had something to say about their chemistry. Pressure builds up as the Star-Kids set out for their debut with huge industry expectations.

Some movies often bring Jodis who undeniably have the gift to sizzle the screen. Such Jodis also become the audience favorite, and they want to see them together more frequently. They become the IT couple of Bollywood. Aamir Khan – Juhi Chawla and Shahrukh Khan – Kajol are an example of evergreen iconic Jodis. Such Jodis define the genre of Love and Romance. Among the fresh faces; Varun Dhawan – Alia Bhatt and Aditya Roy Kapoor – Shraddha Kapoor have nailed it perfectly. The audience is always eager to see them in one frame.

HERO - UK Release - Eros International (2)Sooraj– Athiya too are now being compared in the same league. Viewers are talking about the freshness they bring on screen. The dynamic couple has an amazing youth appeal and fan base.  The kind of support their fans have shown on social media is remarkable.

It comes as no surprise that the industry stalwarts have supported the two since the beginning. But when the youth supports you, you know you have appealed to them. As the Jodi gears up for their debut with such praise, the duo is excited and nervous at the same time. While as Star Kids it is easy to throw starry tantrums and get carried away, this duo set another example. They did everything that they were told to. Such intense characters are a result of such dedication and hard work.

Amar Butala, COO of Salman Khan Films says, “The team at Salman Khan Films is delighted at the response the debutants are getting from the trade and audiences. Sooraj and Athiya are two very talented actors and have incredible chemistry, which has been evident in the trailer and the songs. Director Nikhil Advani says, “Sooraj and Athiya came to me as one. They were always looking out for each other and Encouraging each other. They were each other’s biggest critics. So today when everyone else sees the chemistry or the compatibility they share its not surprising at all for me. For me they will always be just one unit Sooraj-Athiya.”

Hero is Produced by Salman Khan and Subhash Ghai and Directed by Nikhil Advani. The film is released in UK cinemas by Eros International on 11th September 2015.

Emraan Hashmi prepares for new role in ‘Humari Adhuri Kahaani’

Humari Adhoori KahaaniBollywood actors have often mentioned meeting real-life people to get into the skin of the character. While Rani Mukerji interacted with Mumbai police officers for a cop’s role in Mardaani (2014), Vidya Balan met sleuths to play a detective in Bobby Jasoos (2014).

Now, Emraan Hashmi, too, is doing the same. The actor, who plays a restaurant chain owner in his next, Humari Adhuri Kahaani also starring Vidya Balan, has been meeting hotel employees to learn about the nitty-gritties of their profession.

The actor has been taking time out from his work schedules to visit different hotels in the city. “Every alternate day Emraan visits a hotel and he interacts with the management. He is trying to understand their behaviour towards the hotels’ staff and their conduct with the guests,” says a source close to the actor.

Emraan is also meeting a lot of hotel chain owners to know how they function and observe their body language. The actor is also not shying away from interacting with the waiters and is trying to understand how they manage a crisis situation at work.

“He is happy with whatever observations he has made so far and feels this experience will help him to play the role to perfection,” adds the source.

When contacted, Emraan confirmed the news saying, “Yes, I have been meeting a lot of hotel management people. It is always good to study real-life situations before playing a character.”

Humari Adhuri Kahani is directed by Mohit Suri and releases in UK cinemas through 20th Century Fox on 12th June 2015.

Interview: Deepika Padukone talks about ‘Finding Fanny’

Deepika-Padukone-Finding-Fanny first lookDeepika Padukone will be seen in UK cinemas again from 12th September 2014 in Homi Adajania’s Finding Fanny.

Finding Fanny is the story of five dysfunctional characters from Goa on a road trip to search for the long-lost love of Ferdie played by Naseeruddin Shah.

In this interview, the Om Shanti Om star talks to Bollywood reporter Sunny Malik about the film and much more.

You agreed to do Finding Fanny while you were filming for Cocktail in London. Did you ever have second thoughts afterwards as it’s a different kind of film?
No, never. I was narrated the film during Cocktail and by the end of the film, I decided that I want to be a part of Finding Fanny. Forget all my films last year that have released, as Cocktail had not even released when I said yes to Finding Fanny. The experience that I had with Dinesh Vijan (producer) and Homi Adajania (director) on Cocktail was amazing, which is why I didn’t have to think twice before saying yes to Finding Fanny. I knew that during the making of the film we will have a great time. For me that is the most important thing while making a film. I want to work with people I have a great equation with and have a good time working with. Everything else is secondary e.g. what people are going to think or what the result at the box office will be. I didn’t think of these things at all.

What attracted you to the film when you were narrated the story?
It was the script. It was so refreshing and different from anything else I have done or was offered at that time and most importantly, it stayed with me. The characters and story just stayed with me after the narration. If I may say so, I was so impressed with the script at that time and now after watching the film, it has turned out to be even better. People have watched the film a couple of days ago and we are still getting messages of how they loved the film and how the characters have stayed with them. That exactly is what the film is about. It is not a massive commercial film or a film that will change society. It’s just a simple and feel-good movie which brings warmth and a smile to your face.

Your first look was rather shocking as you were holding a butcher’s knife covered in blood…
Well, that is just another day in the life of my character Angie.

As Homi, the director, and Dinesh, the producer, are very good friends of yours, does it ever get awkward when you have creative differences during the making of a film?
Not at all. I am very comfortable with them. All the movies I have done with the two whether it was Love Aaj Kal, Cocktail or now Finding Fanny, we have all come together in a productive manner. I think because we are friends, we are comfortable with each other and we discuss everything. If someone is unhappy or has something to say, we always discuss it. It’s not necessary that we act upon it but we definitely discuss it. I think, the three of us collaborate and come together really well.

How was your experience working with Dimple Kapadia this time again?
For me she become a personal favourite now, not just as a co-star but as a person. She is someone I have got along very, very well. She took me out shopping and treats me like a daughter. I was moving to my new house and was looking for things for the new place. I remember she had a day off and she told me that she was going to go and look for some things as I had told her how the place was going to look like. She picked up cushion covers, carpets, candles and photo frames for me. She told me that she will call me at ten o’clock in the morning and take me shopping when I have day off. She had the whole day planned out. And sure enough, she called me at ten o’clock in the morning when I had a free day and said that she is ready and we should go. I quickly got ready, we hopped into a car and went shopping. She didn’t even allow me to pay for anything. She took me out for lunch and told me how she was extremely fond of me. I remember we came back at six or seven in the evening. I will never forget that. Even today, people ask me about her because of this new film. In one of my interviews, I praised her and I meant it. She was so touched that she sent me a bag of goodies the next day. My equation with her really goes beyond films. She is someone I connect with at an emotional level.

The duration of the film is quite short for Indian movies. Do you feel that is a plus point?
I have always believed that you have to enjoy a movie for what it is. There are filmmakers that make movies which are three hours long and then there are filmmakers that make films which are one or two hours long. I don’t think the duration of a movie matters at all. It should have no bearing of what the audience feels eventually. As long as you feel that you have enjoyed the movie and connected with the characters, that is all that matters. Suddenly there is too much focus on numbers like box office or duration. These are all silly external factors. If we manage to bring out a smile to your face at the end of the movie, that is a sign of a good film for me.

Finding Fanny

The film is being released in UK cinemas by 20th Century Fox. Do you think this being an English language film, it can reach a wider audience?
Yes, most definitely and hopefully it will. It is nice to know that a big studio like Fox is a part of a film like Finding Fanny. I do hope that it reaches a lot more people. The idea of films in general is to make them available and accessible to as many people as possible. I don’t think language should ever be a barrier. I can say that the reach our films have had in the last couple of years is phenomenal. I was shooting in Corsica (island near France) and I had fans over there. They were not of Indian origin. They were people who were born and brought up there or in France. They have seen Om Shanti Om over and over again. I can’t tell you exactly what, but it was such an overwhelming feeling.

Finding Fanny stars Deepika Padukone. Arjun Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia, Pankaj Kapur and Naseeruddin Shah. The film is directed by Homi Adajania and releases on 12th September 2014 in UK cinemas through 20th Century Fox.

The iconic Madhuri Dixit and inimitable Juhi Chawla ignite the silver screen in powerhouse performances that will resonate with audiences and cinemagoers both traditional and new, as Gulaab Gang presents Indian filmmaking at its finest on the platform of world cinema.

Gulaab Gang heralds a new dawn in Hindi cinema for multiple reasons, among them that two of the industry’s most accomplished and acclaimed female artists take centre stage in a strong, social message film about female empowerment, with women at the heart and soul of the film; the adulated and beloved Juhi Chawla delivers a career magnum opus in her first negative screen role; and the beguiling Madhuri Dixit lends her vocals to Soumik Sen’s emotive and heart-stirring soundtrack that harmoniously complements a film that will pack a punch with audiences and critics alike for years to come.

Gulaab Gang - UK ReleaseSynopsis: Somewhere in the Hindi heartland, an ashram of sorts has been set up by ‘Rajjo’ (Madhuri Dixit), where women armed with axes and sickles and dressed in pink nine yards mete out evil and seek out justice for one and all, while making hand-ground spices, hand-woven baskets and sarees. But when the party she was campaigning for reveals its true colours, Rajjo knows she has a whole new battle ahead of her, dual-headed by a corrupt force of evil in the guise of ‘Sumitra Devi’ (Juhi Chawla).

Sumitra Devi is an institution whose money, bullet and connection-driven juggernaut of politics is a threat Rajjo hasn’t encountered before. Realising the devil incarnate is soon enough going to swamp, sabotage, silence and encompass the work she has been striving for all these years and draw her into a deadlier web of buyout, Rajjo is forced into battle with this new, unseen evil… at the ballot box. With something she has lived to learn all these years – the strength of soul, song and stick – this season the color of justice will be pink.

Proving the power in pink in Indian cinema’s most compelling, female-centric film to date, Gulaab Gang releases on 7th March 2014, produced by Anubhav Sinha, presented and co-produced by Sahara Movie Studios and Bharat Shah, distributed internationally by B4U.

B4U to release QUEEN in UK cinemas on 7th March

queen-uk-release-b4uIndian cinema presents one of the most delightful and upbeat female-centric films of recent times, bearing all the hallmarks of an iconic piece of filmmaking. Reflecting today’s India, sitting between modernism and conservatism, from the perspective of a charismatic female protagonist, Queen releases in cinemas on 7th March 2014, to mark Women’s Day (on 8th March), produced by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and distributed internationally by B4U.

Directed by maverick filmmaker, Vikas Bahl, whose previous directorial projects include the globally lauded Chillar Party, Queen is a charming, romantic comedy that represents new wave Indian cinema at its best, sure to be unanimously welcomed by contemporary Indian cinema connoisseurs as well as world cinema audiences and critics globally, in the same vein as previous foreign language successes such as Amelie and the 2012 Indian film hit, English Vinglish.

At the helm of Queen and reigning over the screen is the irresistibly loveable Kangana Ranaut, delivering her most formidable role to date and set to rule the hearts of audiences with her essay of a small-town, Indian girl about to embark on a journey of self-awakening and self-discovery that will change her life forever. Joining her onscreen are two of the finest artists among the new generation of Indian film talent – Rajkummar Rao and Lisa Haydon. Queen beautifully conveys a contemporary India caught at the crossroad of modernity and traditionalism, oozing charm and feel-good warmth, perfectly accentuated by a melodious and breezy soundtrack by composer Amit Trivedi.

Queen- Gujariya (3)Synopsis: ‘Rani’ (Kangana Ranuat) is a 24-year-old born and brought up in a conservative, Punjabi family residing in Rajouri, New Delhi. Being the only girl in a traditional family unit, she has always been protected to such an extent that even a trip to the grocery store around the corner requires her mother asking her younger brother to accompany her. The typical, ‘Chintu, zaraa Didi ke saath chale jana’ scenario.

Rani’s sheltered life revolves around her Home Science course at college, her collective of female friends and her father’s ‘mithai ki dukaan’ (sweet shop). Like any other girl, she dreams relentlessly of the perfect guy to tie the knot with before embarking on her honeymoon – a life milestone for which she has been saving up since class 9.

When she reaches suitable age, her parents introduce her to ‘Vijay’, the son of their close family friend, and after persistent coaxing and the typical-boy-trying-to-impress-girl routine, Rani begins to fall for Vijay and, in her mind, accepts him as her beau. Engagement follows with the wedding planned for six months later, as Vijay is imminently posted to England as an engineer. So with dreams of her wedding and well-planned honeymoon on the agenda, Rani and her family kickstart the preparations.

As the dates approach, with relatives and functions in flow, Vijay returns for the wedding but calls it off at the 11th hour, citing a mismatch of interests and lifestyle. Rani is unable to come to terms with the jilt. Her entire family tries to console her with the typical reassurances. Then, taking her life and destiny in her own hands, she decides, impromptu, to go for her meticulously pre-planned honeymoon… by herself. A girl who has never been out in Delhi unescorted by her younger brother now leaves for a foreign land to embark on a life journey filled with experience and adventure.

Join Queen on her journey of self-discovery on 7th March 2014, produced by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and distributed internationally by B4U.
