Said Sonam K Ahuja, “The only way to live is to not think about it too much, and have incredible self belief. You need to really centre yourself and be in the moment and say – I’m amazing, I can do this and I’m the best version of myself. You need to have self belief”.

Arianna Huffington added , “I think there’s so much we can learn from the ancient wisdom of India, which is now validated by modern science. I think it’s all about the combination of ancient wisdom, modern science and then new role models, because in the end people learn through stories. Live life as though everything is rigged in your favour.

Interview: Sonam Kapoor speaks about ‘Neerja’

NEERJA UK CompetitionThe gorgeous Sonam Kapoor can be seen in the much-awaited and already critically acclaimed Neerja in UK cinemas now.

Neerja is a biopic and a cinematic representation of the dramatic events that unfolded on September 5th, 1986 when Pan Am Flight 73 from Bombay to New York was hijacked in transit at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi by Palestinian extremists from Abu Nidal’s terrorist outfit. This is the story of Neerja Bhanot, a 22-year-old part time model, who was the head purser on the flight. Neerja had escaped an abusive marriage and, as a life change, decided to become an airhostess, subsequently impressing everyone so much that they made her a purser.

Throughout the horrifying ordeal, Neerja didn’t succumb to her fears and instead fought her personal demons from the past and, from the minute the plane was hijacked through the terrifying 17 hours to the grueling end, used her courage, wits and compassion to make sure the passengers were protected, going so far as to hide the passports of the American passengers. Through her swift thinking and brave actions, she managed to save the lives of 359 passengers and crew on board out of 379, all at the cost of her own life.

Neerja was hailed internationally as ‘the heroine of the hijack’ and posthumously became the youngest recipient of India’s highest civilian honour for bravery, the Ashoka Chakra; was bestowed the Flight Safety Foundation Heroism award by USA; Tamgha-e-Insaaniyat ( awarded for showing incredible human kindness) by Pakistan; Justice for Crimes Award by United States Attorney’s Office for the district of Columbia; Special Courage Award by the US government; and theIndian Civil Aviation Ministry’s Award.

Speaking to BollyNewsUK, Sonam Kapoor spoke about playing the title character in the film and much more…

You’ve had a great last year and are starting off 2016 with Neerja. How are you feeling?
I am super kicked about Neerja. I really believe in the film. I also really believe in what Neerja stood for. I am really excited for people to now watch the movie and take something away from it.

Audiences would not expect to see you in a film like Neerja. How did it come about?
I don’t like to give audiences what they expect. I like to mix it up. I like to do something different with every film. My agent was working on making this film. Everything just feel into place organically as it’s such a beautiful story and very well-written script. We just wanted to make it badly. We wanted everyone to know her story since it’s so inspiring and everything became really easy because everyone has the same mind-set about it. Neerja is an unsung hero and we wanted her to become heroic again.

Neerja

Bling!, who manage your career, are producing the film. Was that a comfortable aspect of being a part of such a sensitive film?
It wasn’t just Bling! but also Fox Star and the creative producer, Rucha Pathak. I have worked with her on many occasions previously. She was the one who put Khoobsurat together with my sister Rhea at Disney. She moved to Fox Star after Khoobsurat. I have worked with the people at Fox Star before too and I just knew that I was in good hands with all these people. Everyone just really believed in the film. I am really grateful to all these people who have shown immense commitment to the film.

20th Century Fox is releasing the film in UK cinemas. Do you feel the subject and the wide reach of the international studio can make the film go mainstream in the UK?
We are releasing the film in UK cinemas with English subtitles. I am not aware of how wide the release is. It can definitely attract a mainstream audience and I hope it does well abroad. I’m sure if it catches on, Fox will increase the cinema screens.

Neerja - Fox Star Studios - UK ReleaseComposer Shekhar Ravjiani is part of the film as well, which is surprising. How did that happen?
Vishal plays a cameo in the film. You need to watch the film to explore what he is doing in the film. Honestly, all credit goes to Atul Kasbekar and my director Ram Madhvani to get him on board. He is a musician but he is a lovely human being and I have known him for many years. It’s great to have him a part of Neerja.

How much has the story of Neerja been changed for cinematic adaptation?
We have not amended anything of the original story. We have to be really sensitive as there are survivors who are alive and we did not want to change anything just for the sake of it. It’s best for people to watch the film and judge for themselves.

What’s next for you after Neerja?
I don’t want to reveal it because all my energy is dedicated towards Neerja at the moment. A week after the release, there will an announcement.

Neerja is produced by Fox Star Studios and co-produced by Bling Unplugged and has been directed by celebrated ad film director, Ram Madhvani. Actress Sonam Kapoor is playing the role of the young brave heart and adding to the cast is veteran and internationally renowned actress, Shabana Azmi, playing the role of Neerja’s mother.

Releasing on 19th February 2016, Neerja is produced by Fox Star Studios and co-produced by Bling Unplugged, and has been directed by celebrated ad film director, Ram Madhvani. Actress Sonam Kapoor essays her most career-defining role as the young braveheart and adding to the cast is veteran and internationally renowned actress, Shabana Azmi, playing the role of Neerja’s mother.

What Neerja Bhanot’s mother told Sonam Kapoor when they met

Sonam Kapoor with Rama BhanotIn a making of video for the upcoming film Neerja, which stars Sonam Kapoor as the late air stewardess Neerja Bhanot, the actress explains what went into the biopic, with help from director Ram Madhvani and producer Atul Kasbekar.

Sonam Kapoor tweeted the video, saying “I’m honoured to have played #Neerja. Truly inspired by her life. A peek into my journey.”

Neerja documents the story of Neerja Bhanot, who was killed in the 1986 hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 in Karachi. Ms Bhanot, who was 23, died while shielding a group of children from gunfire and became the youngest ever recipient of the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award.

For director Ram Madhvani, ‘it had to be Sonam Kapoor’.

Sonam notes that she felt a “little more responsible towards the film as it is based on a real person.” As part of her prep, Sonam met Neerja’s family in Chandigarh. In the video, she speaks about an emotional moment when Neerja’s mother Rama Bhanot said Sonam reminded her of her late daughter – but that the real Neerja was ‘prettier’. Shabana Azmi plays the role of Rama Bhanot.

Sonam also says that the legacy of Neerja Bhanot meant that she couldn’t let the family down.”They did not care whether their daughter was a hero or not. They just wanted her to be alive. I just couldn’t have let her family down. So, I needed to be very true to the character,” says Sonam.

Sonam also says that the supporting cast, which also includes composer-actor Shekhar Ravjiani, allowed her to deliver a more nuanced performance: “If they wouldn’t have been this brilliant, I would’ve been mediocre as well.”

Actress Sonam Kapoor said: “In a lot of ways, with every phase we needed motivation. It was exhausting and we were shooting 16 hours days, everyday. We were taking long, long takes and we didn’t take breaks. So every week or every four days, after a phase was over, a celebrity will come and give us some motivation, saying this is a story that needs to be told, so give it your 200%.”

Out in UK cinemas on the 19th February 2016, Neerja is produced by Fox Star Studios and co-produced by Bling Unplugged.

“I was under stress filming Neerja” says Sonam Kapoor

Actress Sonam Kapoor says she was under stress working in upcoming biopic Neerja, which is a story of a slain airhostess.

The Ram Madhvani helmed biopic is based on senior flight attendant Neerja Bhanot, who saved 360 lives on a Pan Am flight that was hijacked in Karachi in 1986.

Bhanot became the youngest and first woman recipient of a prestigious Indian award, Ashok Chakra Award, posthumously.

“It was not emotionally draining. It is important that this story is told. It is about this girl, the youngest civilian who got Ashoka Chakra. She was a normal girl…She did bit of modelling. She had the courage to save the world,” Sonam said.

The actress said she was stressed throughout the shooting in anticipation that whether she is doing justice with her role.

“I hope I have done justice to it. I was stressed throughout the film hoping I have done best job possible. I feel the reason why this film was made is to recognise
everyone that it doesn’t matter who you are, where you come from.

“You have to be ordinary to do extra ordinary things and everybody has that in them. You need to have courage to do things.”

The 30-year-old actress revealed that there are quite a few similarities between her and Neerja.

“My values with family, relationships, sensitivity, strong sense of ethics…I think the sense of right and wrong, young people need to see these values and have courage to do right things. This ordinary girl did extraordinary. It is not about me, director and producer but about Neerja.” she said.

Neerja is a biopic drama on the life Neerja Bhanot played by Sonam Kapoor, directed by Ram Madhvani, produced by Fox Star Studios and Bling Unplugged.

Neerja is the courageous story of a 23 year old girl – an air hostess – who lost her life while saving passengers from terrorists on board the hijacked Pan Am Flight 73 on 5th September 1986.

London Video Press Conference with Salman & Sonam #PRDP

Superstar Salman Khan and Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor recently spoke to London journalists via video conference about their upcoming release, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.

To be released in UK cinemas by 20th Century Fox on 12th November, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is directed by Sooraj Barjatya and has music composed by Himesh Reshammiya.

Check out here what the duo had to say about the film…

What do you love most about Prem Ratan Dhan Payo?
Salman: I like the film’s nice, sweet, cute, ticklish moments. I like the film overall and how this really nice, happy, sweet film turns into this really emotional, beautiful, romantic love story which involves the family, brothers, sisters.

I think PRDP is Sooraj’s best work to date. What I see in the character of Prem is what every guy should be like with a girl, which is very difficult as you need to have a lot of patience to be “Prem” in real life. Prem is so endearing that every girl would want to marry someone like Prem. He’s somebody like … he’s actually Sooraj Barjatya! Trust me, Prem is Sooraj. In fact Sooraj likes to see that side in me but the problem is that I only don’t see that side in me in my real life. So Sooraj puts that on film.

You have worked with Sooraj thrice already. How was the experience like this time around?
Salman: I just wish I could do another 4 or 5 films with Sooraj! I’m here in this industry only because of Sooraj Barjatya. A 19 year-old boy took a stand when he was directing his first movie, at a point in time when Rajshri Productions weren’t doing that well, to take on an actor who had already done a film that’s releasing before his film.Sooraj had seen Biwi Ho To Aisi, and we all knew that I sucked in the movie, but despite that he took me on because he thought I was good in the screen test for the film. He went by his instincts and the gut feel of his sister Chanda and cousin Charu.

Sonam: You see Salman was always gorgeous looking…it’s because they had a crush on him!

Salman: Well, they thought they saw something in me to suggest I would make it. I still don’t see what, how… I don’t even question it…let it go!

Sonam & Salman

What are your favourite tracks from the soundtrack?
Salman:  Mine is the title track – Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, and I like Jalte Diye, Jab Tum Chaho, Prem Leela and Aaj Unse Milna Hai

Sonam: Jalte Diye and Prem Leela are my favourite songs from the movie. I also like Aaj Unse Milna Hai as well – it’s a very beautiful, romantic song.

Can you share some fun moments from the making?
Salman: We were working! It wasn’t supposed to be fun. You cannot make such a beautiful film whilst having fun; you need to be focused.

Sonam:  It was a happy time – I think that’s the best way to describe it, we were very happy and content.

What is the most memorable moment from the filming?
Salman: I think every single day was beautiful. Actually walking to the set was a really beautiful feeling. The set were so lovely that we didn’t mind shooting long hours. Sooraj actually is very particular about shooting long hours – he doesn’t like to shoot that many hours, even if the scene was not complete he used to say, let’s leave it now and we’ll continue tomorrow, even if we were like no let’s do it now.  You see, it’s a very large-scale film; in every frame there were like hundreds of people, there was a regal theme, which also made it a very expensive film. Each day costs the production 45, 50 lakhs so when Sooraj said let’s pack up and continue the scene tomorrow, it seriously took a lot of courage.

You have always had a vision for the type of roles you want to play. Is prem ratan dhan payo the biggest payoff of that sort of conviction?
Sonam: Yes, I think that’s what it is. I think you are absolutely right. After I did Mausam, I gave my heart and soul to that and after it didn’t do very well, I didn’t sign a movie for a year and a half. Then I decided to sign Raanjhanaa – everyone around me said I was stupid but I decided to stick to my conviction. But I stuck to my guns. You’re absolutely right that this is the payoff for being patient and handling my life with dignity.

Salman

You have reposting videos of people grooving to the title track. How did that come about?
Sonam: Okay, I’m going to tell you a secret, when I spoke with the marketing team at Fox, they mentioned that people were finding the title Prem Ratan Dhan Payo a bit of a mouthful. They told me we needed to come up with a really fun and genius way to talk about the film a lot. So, there was this really cute guy who did this dubsmash on Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and I thought let’s put this up on instagram and maybe people would be excited about doing dubsmash. I thought it would be cool so I put it up and people really liked it a lot. And then a friend from New York told me to call a competition and to get the 5 best dubsmashes on Instagram – I did just that. There were lots and lots of people who did the dubsmash. It was easy to do and people loved doing the dubsmash as it has a great rhythm. Salman did one too, but he didn’t do it for long. My aunt Sridevi also did one with Shilpa Shetty.  She loves me so much! I remember when I was just becoming an actress, she sat down with me and showed me how to do make-up really patiently for like hours and hours really patiently. I think she was extremely kind to have promoted me and the film. I’ve known Shilpa for a very long time and they had done the dubsmash at my home whilst I was away on promotions for the film. Once they did it they put it up on Instagram and I got a message from Shilpa saying to go on Instagram to see what we’ve done!

You have portrayed many characters named Prem. Is this one different?
Salman: Prem is my favorite character too. I think this Prem is lovelier; he’s a grown man but a very childlike. Sooraj has written this character. He has always been a mature man and romance has also grown in his life ten folds. He was always a mature filmmaker starting his career at the age of 19. He wrote Hum Apke Hain Kaun at the age of just 22 and made the film when he was 24, and there is no man as mature as Sooraj Bharjatya. The way he has written this character, he basically wants men and boys to be like Prem; he wants to change the way they are and to change this for women in the world. He wants men to be funny and charming but to also be respectful to women.

PRDP - Poster (1)

What was your reaction when you were cast in the film?
Sonam: I was very nervous, like really nervous. It’s not easy working with someone who you’ve been a huge fan of. Also it’s not easy because before Salman, I had never worked with a big star like him before. It’s usually been contemporaries. I was nervous but he really made me feel comfortable. The best thing about him professionally is that he is the most hardworking actor that I worked with, he pushes himself and he is extremely talented. He’s also very modest. Also, professionally it’s easier to work with someone who doesn’t judge you in anyway. I remember when I was messing up he’d come and tell me really nicely, he has a lot of patience.

Salman: That is true, when you need to get some good work out of a bad actor you need to be patient.

Are you playing a double role in the film?
Salman: Yes I am playing the roles of Vijay Singh and Prem – but if I open up too much about the characters I will spoil the suspense. But what I can say is that both the characters are phenomenal.

Sonam Kapoor learns driving a Jeep for ‘Dolly Ki Doli’

Sonam Kapoor in DollySonam Kapoor, who is known to be a fashion icon, is seen driving a jeep in new film Dolly ki Doli.

Sonam left no stone unturned, when it came to preparing for her role in the film. She even learned driving for the movie, as in the film you see her fleeting away at several occasions for which it was required for her to drive.

So Sonam ensured that she took a special 21 day driving class and drove a jeep in the film.

Says a source, “Sonam Kapoor rides a jeep in the film for which she had to go back to the drawing board and take driving lessons…While Sonam does know the basics she had never driven a jeep before and took a 21 day crash course so that she was comfortable behind the wheel before she got into the next schedule of the film”.

Dolly Ki Doli is in UK cinemas now.

Q&A: Sonam Kapoor talks about Disney’s ‘Khoobsurat’

Check out a Q&A of Sonam Kapoor about Khoobsurat, which releases in UK cinemas on 19th September 2014 through Walt Disney Pictures in association with Anil Kapoor Film Company.

Rekha played your role in the original Khoobsurat, did you find any inspiration from her?
People are drawing comparisons, obviously, but I can never be as good as her, and this is not just about Rekhaji. Meena Kumari, Katherine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn … they were all icons and I am inspired by all of them. I am also inspired by other women who are artists. I am inspired by clothes that I find beautiful, or by art. I am not trying to imitate or ape someone and there is more to me than just the clothes. My paintings, for instance. I love art. I collect books. I do so many things and there are so many other facets to my personality as well. But I guess I can’t really carry my paintings or my books around with me, so it’s my clothes that become the talking point.”

Sonam in Disneyland

Will Rekha watch the film?
Rekha is close to our family. She has seen Aisha. So we will be showing Rekha this film. In fact, she will be one of the first people to see it. She has given me her blessing.

Do you think you will be as good as Rekha?
I don’t think I can do justice to what Rekha has done. This film is an ode to Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s filmmaking. There are very few films that have been wholesome entertainers and have great value. Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s films appealed to all, as they were fun films with a message. Today, such films are made by Raju Hirani. It is a huge responsibility but it was exciting to work on this film.

How did you manage to sign Fawad Khan as your prince?
We auditioned a lot of actors for the film and thought he would be right for the role. He’s big in India as well. I don’t know anyone who watches TV and doesn’t know Fawad. In fact, he has a bigger fan following than me. We were shooting for a TV show recently, and there were girls taking pictures of his van even when he hadn’t stepped out. And it [the decision to cast him] has got nothing to do with being an Indian or a Pakistani; an artiste is an artiste. He is the perfect hero. In our industry, we have so many boys, but what we don’t have is men. When you meet Fawad, you realise he is a man.

Did you feel like you had other responsibilities, other than acting, as this is your home production?
When I take on a job as an actor, I only concentrate on doing that, otherwise there is a conflict. You have to just do your best with what you have got. So, it’s just the matter of taking each day, enjoying my work, and saying that I will be a selfish actor who will do my best for the film.

Sonam in Disneyland

For you, what do you want the audience to take away from this film?
In line with the idea of the film, which is to be happy and positive. This movie shows that life, and movies by extension, don’t have to be dreary and dark. They can be colourful and cheerful.

The new track from Khoobsurat, ‘Abhi Toh Party’ will surely have you on the dance floor. The song is sung by the new Rapster of Bollywood, Badshah, who sung the chartbuster ‘Saturday, Saturday’ from Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania.

In a never-before-seen persona, Sonam Kapoor looks relaxed and at ease in her ensemble of a cropped top, jacket and dhoti pants, finishing her look with ornate, chunky jewellery.

The song is set in a formal party, where a bored-looking Dr Mili Chakravarty (Sonam Kapoor) livens up the party with her sensational dance-moves. What’s more, she even includes some of her own superstar father’s (Anil Kapoor) iconic and inimitable dance steps.

Khoobsurat releases in UK cinemas on 19th September 2014 through Walt Disney Pictures in association with Anil Kapoor Film Company.

Khoobsurat - PosterSynopsis: Walt Disney Pictures and Anil Kapoor Film Company is all set to have its fairytale beginning, as it launches into the magical realm of Indian cinema with its Bollywood offering – ‘Khoobsurat’ – releasing on 19th September 2014.

Khoobsurat, directed by Shashanka Ghosh (Waisa Bhi Hota Hai II, Mumbai Cutting), is a family entertainer which revolves around a royal misfit (the sensational Sonam Kapoor) who ultimately falls in love with her prince charming(latest Pakistani hearthrob, Fawad Khan).

Khoobsurat is a quirky, modern romantic comedy about what happens when a vibrant, hopelessly romantic physiotherapist meets a handsome young Rajput prince who is the complete opposite of her – and is engaged to someone else. It is a battle of values between two individually crazy families — one that encourages discipline and self-restraint versus the other, which is all for spontaneity and open-mindedness. The film also features veteran actors Kirron Kher, Ratna Pathak Shah and Aamir Raza Husain.

Sonam Kapoor in Dior in London - Bewakoofiyan (6)London Fashion Week is going on. Will we see you attend any shows?
No, I can’t attend any LFW shows this time. I am in London for some work and unfortunately don’t have the time.

You had a good 2013 with successful films like Raanjhaana and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Are you selecting your films more carefully now because expectations are high?
I am trying to choose films that push me as an actor. I am trying to do new and different things. I get bored really easily and I don’t want that to happen.

What do you want; box office success or awards?
I am greedy, I want both.

Your new film Bewakoofiyaan is your first YRF production. How did it come about?
Well, I have been in talks with Yash Raj for a few other projects but nothing ever materialised. I can’t tell you which other projects. It unfortunately doesn’t work that way (smiles). Nothing worked out but then this film came along and it was quite exciting. I really liked the fact that Habib Faisal (Band Baaja Barat) had written it, Nupur Asthana was directing it and that I would be acting with Rishi Kapoor. When all these things came together, I just decided that I was going to do this film.

What was the deciding factor for you while listening to the script of Bewakoofiyaan?
I think it was the fact that the story had real problems and real people. I liked that. People like my character exist in cities like Mumbai and Delhi or any Indian metropolitan cities. People in such cities are concerned about their job, their cinemas and having popcorn (laughs).

How well do you think Bewakoofiyaan will do at the overseas box office?
My films have done really well in the UK and I hope that the trend continues with Bewakoofiyaan. But I don’t know. I just hope the audience understands the film because these are problems that you face in metropolitan cities in India. However, I think that most problems are universal and hope UK audiences understand them when they watch the film.

How was it like working with Ayushman Khuranna?
It was amazing working with him because he is very pleasant, hardworking and talented. When you wake up in the morning, you want to be on the film set with someone like him.

Not many expected you to work with Rishi Kapoor after the repercussions of your Koffee with Karan episode.
Yes, but honestly most of it was media created. I have known him all my life. I call his sister ‘Maasi’ (Aunt). We are family friends. I love him and he loves me. We had a great time working together.

Sonam Kapoor in Bikini YRFWhy is it such a huge issue for people that you are wearing a bikini in the film?
It’s the Indian mentality.

A few years ago you said that actors in Bollywood need stylists. Now a lot of your contemporaries use your stylist. Are you happy with how they look now?
I am always happy with what people wear. As long as it doesn’t hurt my eyes, I am good.

Disney is producing your next film, Khoobsurat…
Yes, it’s Disney’s first production in India and they have decided to make it me with me. I am very excited about the film. I am also doing a film produced by Arbaaz Khan. He has produced the Dabangg franchise and is now producing Dolly Ki Doli. I think he likes his films to start with D (laughs).

Bewakoofiyaan releases in UK cinemas on 14th March 2014.

The obstinate old man believes that only a rich man can bring Mayera happiness and a mid-level executive like Mohit simply isn’t good enough!
