Interview: “I don’t know why people think it’s a crime to work with the Khans” – Kareena Kapoor Khan

Kareena Kapoor Khan in Bajrangi Bhaijaan (1)Bollywood royalty Kareena Kapoor Khan spent some quality time in London recently with beau Saif Ali Khan.

The award-winning actress will be seen on-screen with Bollywood superstar Salman Khan this Eid, 17th July, in Kabir Khan’s political drama, Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Kapoor plays the role of Rasika in the film which is produced by Salman Khan Films and released in UK cinemas by Eros International.

Taking time off her London vacation, Kareena caught up with Asian Sunday Newspaper to speak about Bajrangi Bhaijaan and much more…

You’ve been spotted by fans in London and have been taking selfies with them too. How has the annual UK holiday been this year right before the release of your next film?
I absolutely love it. You know me and London is more than home for me. Whenever I come back here, I have this feeling that I am finally home.

You also met Channing Tatum whilst in London. That picture sort of broke the internet…
(
Laughs) I think most of my selfies are breaking the internet. One of my friends took it and he is on Instagram and Twitter which is how it got out as I am not on any social media platforms.

You recently said that you are choosing films differently now compared to a few years ago. How has the process changed?
I think, I love the fact that I can be a part of blockbuster commercial movies. They have always been a part of my repertoire and my DNA. I love doing commercial masala films. I also do different films like Balki’s next directorial also starring Arjun Kapoor. My role in that film amazing. Then I will be seen in Udta Punjab which is a drama film about the drug issue in Punjab, India. I am trying to just balance it out, like always.

Kareena Kapoor Khan in Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2)Do you go by your instinct when choosing a film then?
Yes, I do go by my instinct. Sometimes it turns out right and sometimes it turns out wrong but I have no regrets. I really have to just feel what I have to do. I have always done what I wanted to do and never followed any particular rules as such.

One doesn’t really say no to a Salman Khan movie but what made you say yes to Bajrangi Bhaijaan?
(Laughs) Everybody is used to seeing Salman in films which are loaded with action and comedy. This is one Salman Khan film where the story is the hero. The story is very different. Kabir Khan makes larger-than-life commercial blockbuster films but he also makes films which have stories and a meaning. The characters in the film are all very relevant to the plot. The entire setting of the film is also very real.

Popular male actors tend to take credit for the success of blockbuster movies while female actors are sometimes not given their due. Does that worry you when you are a part of blockbusters?
Not at all and I don’t think like that. I have been a part of commercial films like 3 Idiots, Bodyguard, the Golmaal series and Singham. I don’t think anyone has said that it’s just a Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan film. Talking about Ra.One for example, if you take out the song Chammak Challo it becomes a different film. People were mostly only talking about that song. In Bodyguard people mostly spoke about the chemistry that I share with Salman Khan on-screen. In the case of 3 Idiots, people remember my scenes very well. It’s never been about it. Even back in the days such as Hema Malini in Sholay, she didn’t have the title role. Sholay was about Dharamji and Amitji. She was a part of the film and you can’t take her out of it. For me it doesn’t work like that. I don’t know why people think it’s a crime to work with the Khans. I just don’t understand why it’s such a hue and cry and trust me, everyone wants to work with them (laughs).

The film has been a bit controversial because of its reported story…
People don’t know the story. It’s such an emotional drama and a beautiful story. People are trying to make a controversy out of it, not that it matters, but people are still going to watch the film and they will still be flocking to the theatres. Once they see the film they will know how appreciative the film is to both India and Pakistan.

Kareena Kapoor Khan in Bajrangi Bhaijaan (3)How was it like to work with Salman Khan again after Bodyguard?
We have a very special relationship. When his sister became a producer for the first time with Bodyguard, I was the heroine of the film. When his brother Arbaaz Khan directed for the first time (Dabangg 2), I had a special appearance in the song Fevicol Se. Now Bajrangi Bhaijaan is Salman’s first production after working in the industry for twentyfive-years and I’m the heroine of the film. I think there is a very deep connection between the Khan’s and myself.

The soundtrack of Bajrangi Bhaijaan is already topping charts…
Pritam, the composer, has always done a spectacular job. He composed the music for Jab We Met too. The music of the film is very soulful but simultaneously you also have songs that you can dance to.

Bodyguard also released on Eid and people at a London cinema couldn’t get tickets and were seated on the floor to watch it on the first day…
Oh God, that will most likely be the case for Bajrangi Bhaijaan too because the excitement level is extremely high among our fans. The audience is expecting a good film and they want to see a film with a good story that features Salman Khan. That is something that is going to be deeply respected.

Your item song from the film Brothers, ‘Mera Naam Mary’ has just been released…
I think that it will be ten steps ahead of Fevicol Se from Dabangg 2.

Your fanclub on Twitter wants to know if you call Saif Ali Khan by his reported legal name ‘Sajid’ too?
(Laughs) No, that’s not his legal name and I don’t know where that all came from in the media. His mother thought of the name but his name is only Saif Ali Khan and thank God for that.

Interview: “I have to work harder now” – Jacqueline Fernandez

Bollywood star Jacqueline Fernandez will be seen in UK cinemas from today in the much awaited Salman Khan action comedy, Kick.

Kick is helmed by popular producer-turned-director Sajid Nadiadwala, with the screenplay written by Sajid Nadiadwala and acclaimed author Chetan Bhagat.  The film also stars Randeep Hooda, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Mithun Chakraborty and a special appearance by Nargis Fakhri.

The former Miss Sri Lanka Universe spoke to Bollywood Reporter Sunny Malik about the film, her co-star, love for London and her upcoming concert at The 02…

You have had huge success with Race 2 last year. Soon after you were signed for Roy with Ranbir Kapoor, Kick opposite Salman Khan and as the face of ‘The Body Shop’ in India. Your life has changed quite a bit…
It is definitely an extremely great time for me. I know that every movie and project is exciting but with Kick, it is a completely different experience because it is the biggest movie of my career. It’s just WOW for me! I have worked extremely hard on this movie, the hardest I have ever worked. But I haven’t had the time to allow it to sink in, that I am doing something which is so huge. We just wrapped up the movie a few weeks ago and I just finished dubbing for the film too. You have no idea, everything just seems like a dream to me. I am on cloud nine and exploding (laughs). From the trailer launch to the song launches, it’s weird but I had the same feeling I had during Aladin, my first feature film. When I watch the promos of Kick, I feel like this is the first time I have ever seen myself on screen. It’s really cool.

Jacqueline Fernandez in Kick - UK Interview (2)There were strong rumours of another actress being cast for the film last year. Suddenly it was announced that you were the leading lady opposite Salman Khan. Was it hidden from the public or did it happen all of a sudden?
It happened overnight. It happened in slow motion for me (laughs).  I was called to Sajid Nadiwala’s office for a meeting. I presumed it was a meeting for anything else but Kick. I would never have thought that I’ll meet him for a role in Kick. I worked with him twice before and know that he makes good cinema. He suddenly offered me Kick and I was completely shocked. It was the least expected thing that ever happened to me. When there were rumours floating about who the actress will be in the film, usually I would wish for it to come to me or dream about being a part of the movie. At that time, Kick seemed so big to me that I didn’t even dream about it. I thought that were was no point in even dreaming (laughs). That was my attitude. I don’t know what amazing Karma I had in order for me to get this opportunity. It was a shocker.

Everyone wants to work with Salman Khan… He even recently tweeted about you to his 7.45 million followers…
He follows me on Twitter now, which is the coolest thing that ever happened in my life (laughs). A few weeks ago he tweeted that Jacqueline Fernandez will release the song Jumme Ki Raat, without tagging me in it. Just because he tweeted my name, my Twitter following increased by about 300,000 people. I was in shock and couldn’t believe it. Now he has followed me and I am scared to check my Twitter because it might crash (laughs).

Salman Khan has also lent his voice to the soundtrack of Kick… Were you surprised that he sings?
It’s amazing. Is there anything that Salman Khan can’t do? He is an all-rounder artist. He can do it all. When I heard him in ‘Hangover’, I was surprised because he has such an incredible voice.

It’s also the first time that you are dubbing your dialogues in Hindi… that must have been a tough task?
Honestly, throughout the year it has been a gradual process of just working hard and being consistent. I believe that is why I got a film like Kick. Even though I didn’t expect it, I knew that I was someone who was working hard. I was going to my Hindi classes and there was never a point where I wanted to give up. I was constantly analysing what else I can do and was meeting people for work. What I have learnt now is that you have to be consistent in your work. Even now, just because I have got a big movie, doesn’t mean that I can sit back and enjoy. I possibly have to even work harder now. I am obviously prepared to do it because it’s something I am doing ever since I am here working in the Indian Film Industry. I take my work very seriously and I am also enjoying it as well. It’s beautiful when you enjoy what you do.

Jacqueline Fernandez in Kick - UK Interview (5)You also came to London to shoot for the film but the schedule didn’t go ahead because of Salman’s visa issues.
I went mad when I was in London as I explored it quite a lot. Sajid Nadiwala was in Glasgow to shoot some actions scenes with Randeep Hooda. We were in London and as soon as our shopping spree was over, we were told that the schedule has been cancelled. It was still amazing though. We were shopping for the movie but we had a lot of fun all the time and were buying stuff for ourselves.

What new areas of London did you explore?
I went to all the markets like Portobello Road. I visited quite a few vintage markets and antique stores. Besides the usual visits to Harrods, I had afternoon tea, which sounds clichéd but I had to do it (laughs). We also checked out some amazing clubs. I also went to The Arts Club which was nice. It was the best time I have ever spent in London because we had free time and weren’t just shooting for a movie every day.

You are also a part of Bollywood Showstoppers, the concert taking place at The 02 in London on 3rd August…
I am excited for that. It’s in London and that is always a good reason. I also like the mix of people who are a part of it like Shahid Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha and Ali Zafar. I love performing and I am so excited to be in a show with my contemporaries. I have never performed in London. I can’t wait to maybe dance to ‘Jumme Ki Raat’. It should be fun. We have been working on the look and styling and have recently started rehearsing too with the choreographers from London.

Interview: ‘I don’t like to associate myself with any camps’- Kangana Ranaut

Hungama_QueenBollywood beauty Kangana Ranaut speaks to Sunny Malik about her next release, Queen.

The film is a feel-good and female-centric flick directed by Vikas Bahl and produced by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures.

Queen releases in UK cinemas on 7th March 2014 through B4U.

How was your experience attending the Burberry show at the recently concluded London Fashion Week?
It was really beautiful. London was great as it didn’t rain that day. We were expecting it to rain and it didn’t. So we were quite lucky with the weather (Laughs). It was my first experience at an international fashion week and show. Burberry and I go long back as they have been dressing me for red carpet appearances and events. I was thrilled to see their collection. I loved how they received me. It was just a lovely experience.

Your film Queen was postponed from February to March and is now clashing with two other films at the UK Box Office…
The makers weren’t sure yet as we have a song called ‘Hungama Ho Gaya’ and they wanted it to become slightly more popular. They wanted to market the song more extensively which is why the release date was postponed by a week. The film is now releasing on 7th March. I think, it was a call taken by the makers, the marketing team and the distributors. They all wanted to promote the music further because it’s the kind of soundtrack that grows on you after you listen to it a few times. We don’t have clichéd Bollywood numbers inspired by the 70’s which you can’t hear ever again after liking them and listening to them a few times. Vikas Bahl, the director, told me that this music needs time to become popular.

People have been praising your performance after watching just the trailer…
I am getting amazing reactions. Mr. Amitabh Bachchan has apparently tweeted about the trailer. I also met him at a party recently. Mr. Bachchan, Mr. Aamir Khan and Mr. Salman Khan all told me that they are eagerly waiting to watch the film. What else can one ask for? It’s very important to me because I have felt accepted for the first time. I have never received such support for any of my films before.

You have never been a part of camps… Do you feel that the film fraternity has accepted you now?
I don’t like to associate myself with any camps or such. I want to do my own thing. I like to have a little personal life whenever I can. I’d like to be my own person. I don’t want to just cling onto others. I feel that everyone has their own goals. My goal is mine and I don’t need to associate that with another person’s goals. I like to keep it that way. I’d love to work with artists such as Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, Mr. Aamir Khan and Mr. Salman Khan, at the same time it is not the goal of my life or career. It’s not something I am working towards. I am not sure about acceptance from the film fraternity as I don’t work for anyone. I work for myself and my own happiness. It’s alright if people don’t accept me. I won’t be unhappy about it.

queen-uk-release-b4u

Vikas Bahl just produced Hasee Toh Phasee and is known to make exceptional films. How was your experience being directed by him in Queen?
What I love about these contemporary filmmakers is their spontaneity. They allow artists to contribute to the film in many ways. Vikas allowed me to write dialogues of the film, not that I was planning to or worked towards it. It just happened very organically. He liked what I was coming up with and he let me write my own dialogues. At the same time, he understands the needs of an artist. I remember, I was working multiple shifts and was filming for Krrish 3 and Queen simultaneously. One day when I came from the sets of Krrish 3, Vikas asked me what was wrong with me as I wasn’t behaving and walking like my character Rani. I can’t just switch on and switch off. It takes me months to get into a character and I can’t just work like a robot. He understood that and respected me as an artist. He didn’t shoot with me that day. It’s nice to work with such a director because you then put your all into his film because he respects you.

Could you relate to your character Rani?
I don’t really relate to the character. She has major issues. She believes that by changing herself, she can please people around her. Her goal is to keep everyone happy. She is really naïve. I don’t identify with these traits of her personality. But at the same time, I also come from a middle class background and I understand how and why she feels that way. I have also come from a small city to a big one. But I never had issues like low self-esteem. Everyone has these phases but it’s not something I have experiences throughout my life like Rani has.

How was your experience shooting in places like Amsterdam and Paris?
We frequently shoot abroad but mainly for songs for which we dress up quite a lot. You look like an actress and people come and take pictures with you (laughs). However, for this film I had a very girl-next-door look and honestly, looked very ordinary. People would look at me and wonder why I am so special and why would someone make a movie with me (Laughs). That was a bit different. People would ask the crew “Is she the leading actress?” You know, people have this idea of a Bollywood actress wearing a chiffon saree and her hair flying (laughs) but that wasn’t the case with me.

QUEEN What kind of roles do you want to do?
I am very happy what I am being offered. I am happy with films like Queen and Revolver Rani. I am also doing the sequel to Tanu Weds Manu. I really can’t tell what exactly I want to do in the future but I would love to do a sci-fi film after doing Krrish 3. I would love to do films like Tomb Raider or Kill Bill. I want to do films which are stylish, sci-fi and about women. It will be a good change and it would challenge me as a performer. I have been missing a stylish character after Fashion. I would love to save the world in a film (laughs).

Three big films are releasing on Friday including Queen…
It’s sad as I would have loved to have a solo release for Queen (laughs).

Bollywood films with Khans or rom-coms do really well abroad and in the UK. What are your expectations from Queen?
I can’t really tell. It’s a shame that some people abroad watch my films only on DVD. Tanu Weds Manu, Fashion and Gangster are really popular abroad but everyone has seen it on DVD or TV. It is different for an audience abroad compared to our audience in India. Indian audiences are very Bollywood oriented. They watch our films every weekend. That is the only entertainment they get here. I don’t know how it works in the UK. I hope that people like it in the UK because Queen has an international appeal.

Queen- Gujariya (3)You are not on Twitter. Why is that?
I have a website which I try to update as much as possible but I am not on Facebook or Twitter. I am not a very social person (laughs).

Your interview with Anupama Chopra went viral on social media…
I never thought that the interview would go viral. That is just how I am. I had no clue that it had gone viral for the longest time. Initially, when messages started to pour in, I would get ten messages a day. I was giving a lot of interviews during the promotions of Krrish 3 and the messages just didn’t stop at all. Then I said, ‘Which interview was it?’ and people told me that it was my interview with Anupama Chopra. Then I saw it and realised that it was really nice and they had also edited it quite nicely.
