Interview: “Shah Rukh Khan is a gentleman” – Jasmine Jardot

To be cast in the role of Shah Rukh Khan’s friend in a Bollywood film would be the dream of many. But that is exactly what happened to Jasmine Jardot, who plays the role of Maria in Jab Tak Hai Jaan. From working alongside SRK’s character in a restaurant, to dancing up a storm and doing the splits in the energetic Ishq Dance and Ishq Shava tracks, Jasmine gets to show off not just her acting prowess but her dance skills too.

Born and brought up in the UK, Jasmine – like Katrina Kaif – is also part Indian. Steven Baker sat down with the talented beauty as her Bollywood journey begins.

How did you bag a Yash Raj film as your debut Bollywood release?
I had to do a few auditions involving a dance routine, some dialogue and just talking about myself for YRF to get to know me a bit. It was all filmed and then sent over to India for them to narrow the choices down and to finally pick someone, I let myself forget about the audition because it was such a huge film and the work I had done before was predominantly dancing and modelling and up until this point my acting experience was limited so when I found out I was really quite shocked, I told my family in India about getting the part and they couldn’t believe it they were so happy. It was an amazing feeling.

Do you remember your first day on set?
Yes. Actually, when I started filming I hadn’t spoken to anyone from the film so when I turned up on the first day I was a little apprehensive. But everyone was so welcoming and even though they were working extremely hard, they always had time to laugh and made me feel at ease. I think this shows how passionate everyone was about this film and it certainly has given me a hunger to do more in Bollywood.

It must have been special to have been directed by the late Yash Chopra?
I feel extremely privileged to have worked with Yash-ji on Jab Tak Hai Jaan as he was such a legendary figure within the industry. It was an amazing experience for me to have worked with him. My mother is from Calcutta so even though I grew up in Britain I was brought up watching Hindi films and Yash Chopra was always one of the greats, so when I was asked by my agent to audition for a Yash Chopra Bollywood film, I jumped at the chance.

You display some fantastic dance skills when you take Katrina clubbing…
I loved filming ‘Ishq Shava’ and ‘Ishq Dance’ the choreographer, Vaibhavi Merchant, was amazing. It was so energetic and had this really cool underground feeling to it, I come from a classical dance background so this was very different and I loved it. The audience will see me playing the role of Maria, who takes Meera (Katrina) to the tunnel where Samar (SRK) is. I dance just before Katrina and Shah Rukh enter the floor in ‘Ishq Dance’. They were very good in this. Their energy and passion took over and they looked incredible in the film. Katrina Kaif is very kind, I liked her a lot and she is very talented as well as being stunning.

How was it sharing screenspace with Shah Rukh Khan?
Shah Rukh is such a gentlemen, he is fantastic. in one of the scenes we were shooting we had to hold these heavy silver trays with champagne on them and between each take he would take mine and hold it for me until we started again, I thought that was wonderful, he is so humble and down to earth something you would not expect from such a high profile actor, he is very wise and I learnt a lot from the both him and Katrina.

What happens to your character Maria by the end of the film, does she also find love?
Maria ends up marrying Zain played by Sharib Hashmi in the movie. Sharib is one of the nicest people I have ever met, he is very funny always joking but a fantastic actor, he made me cry on set with his performance.

What next for Jasmine Jardot?
Working on this film has opened up avenues for me in terms of what I want to do. The next movie you can see me in is the British gangster film AB Negative coming to cinemas in 2013. I am also currently working on the Hindi language, taking more acting and dance classes, and looking forward to doing more work in Indian cinema.

“We are excited to see the film. We thank the family for this premiere. Yash ji would have liked this,” Amitabh Bachchan said.

Yash Chopra passed away Oct 21 after being diagnosed with dengue.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan was supposed to be his last film and is out now on general release across UK cinemas.

Anushka Sharma feels lucky

Anushka Sharma feels lucky to have worked with both late filmmaker Yash Chopra and his son Aditya Chopra.

“I feel very happy and lucky to be a part of Yash Chopra’s last film and to have worked with Aditya in my first film,” said Anushka.

The actress was at the 18th Kolkata International Film Festival to promote her forthcoming film Jab Tak Hai Jaan along with Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif.

The actress, who made her debut in 2008 with Aditya Chopra’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi opposite Shah Rukh Khan, will be next seen with the superstar and Katrina Kaif, in late Yash Chopra’s last directorial venture Jab Tak Hai Jaan releasing in UK cinemas on 13th November.

Speaking about working with the late Yash Chopra, Anushka said, “Every morning I would come to the set and see Yashji standing there beside the camera, getting ready for the first shot. That used to create an excitement in me. That was one my cherished memories of him.”

“It is a love triangle that gives a sense of hope. So everyone should go and watch it,” said the actress about Yash Chopra’s final film.

‘Each film has its own specialty’ – Shah Rukh Khan

The quality of storytelling is more important for the success of films than the lead actors, says Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, whose presence in a movie always draws good footfalls in cinemas all over the UK.

Khan will now be seen in Jab Tak Hai Jaan which was extensively shot in the UK earlier this year.

“The storytelling is more important than saying one lady or two ladies or two heroes or two actors. Each film has its own specialty,” said Shah Rukh.

“Working with both Anushka and Katrina has been personally and professionally an invigorating and exuberant experience,” said the 47-year-old actor.

“I say it from the bottom of my heart that it is a most special film. It will have the typical love triangle by the way,” he added about the romantic saga.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Yash Chopra’s final film, starring Shah Rukh, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in leading roles, releases in UK cinemas on 13th November through Yash Raj Films.

Photos: SRK, Katrina and Anushka promote ‘JTHJ’ in Jalandhar

Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma flew down to the hometown of the late Yashji, city of Jalandhar for the promotion of their film  Jab Tak Hai Jaan yesterday, 7th of November.

The residents of Yashji’s hometown were thrilled by the presence of the stars. All three of them greeted their fans and the media with ‘Sasriyakal’.

The actors interacted with the press and fans and spoke their heart out about the film,  theirs characters and  of course the most important reason for being there, Yashji.

Yashji had always planned to visit the city, where he did his schooling and spent his college days, for the promotion of his film.
The celebrated filmmaker passed away on 21st October, just a few weeks before the release of his film.

The actors also went to Doaba College, where Yashji studied, and were greeted by about 5000 students  who had gathered to see them.

Yash Raj Films vindicated in case filed by Ajay Devgn Films

Yash Raj Films has released a statement on the controversy surrounding Yash Chopra’s final film Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

“After the Competition Comission dismissed the complaint filed by Ajay Devgn Films (ADF) on the basis that they were of the opinion that there was no contravention of the Act in this case, the Competition Appellate Tribunal, in a hearing today, also refused to pass any interim order against Yash Raj Films (YRF) on the ground that the complainant had not put forward sufficient facts to establish that YRF had violated the Competition Act.

We completely refute the press release put out by ADF as the Competition Appellate Tribunal did not find any merit in the contention of ADF because the Tribunal was of the view that ADF has totally failed to establish that the agreements entered into by YRF with the single screens cinemas would cause any appreciable adverse effect on competition. It was also noted by the Tribunal that YRF had announced the release of its film on 27th June 2011 with its announcement of the release of its film for Diwali 2012 and commenced booking of single screen theatres in June, July & Aug 2012. On the contra, ADF announced the release of its film only on 29th May 2012 and approached the single screen owners only in October 2012 by which time YRF had taken a lead. It was expressly noted that the number of screens contracted for Jak Tak Hai Jaan, being far less than that of Ek Tha Tiger, prima facie no case of adverse effect on competition, much less appreciable effect on competition, was made out.

“In a free competition Ajay Devgn admits that the cine goers will decide the film that they wish to see. With both the films having opened the booking on the same day, the cine goers already seem to have expressed their verdict. Even as we go to press with this release, we are being approached by a large number of theatres with offers to screen our film.”

While Despite several media queries, YRF has maintained a strict media silence while the matter was pending before the competent judicial authorities, deeming it inappropriate to comment on the matter while it was before the judicial authorities. YRF has never desired nor manipulated such publicity.

It is unfortunate that our refusal to comment has led to aspersions being cast on YRF’s business practises, which have always been ethical and of the highest standards.

With this matter having been laid to rest for now, we would like to get back to releasing Jab Tak Hai Jaan this Diwali on the 13th of November. This is the time to celebrate a Yash Chopra Romance, which has traditionally lit up homes worldwide, during this festive season.

And Yash Raj Films’ will continue to do so, jab tak hai jaan,” said the press release.

The film starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma will release in UK cinemas on 13th November 2012.

‘Mere Dad Ki Maruti’ Trailer in UK cinemas with ‘JTHJ’

BollyNewsUK has learnt that the trailer of Y-Films’ Mere Dad Ki Maruti will be attached to Jab Tak Hai Hai Jaan.

The trailer of the film starring Saqib Saleem will be played  before Yash Chopra’s final film across UK cinemas from next Tuesday, when Jab Tak Hai Jaan releases here.

Mere Dad Ki Maruthi is an outrageous comedy set against the backdrop of a loud Punjabi wedding in Chandigarh and tells the story of a boy who sneaks his dad’s fancy new car out to impress the college hottie and how all hell breaks loose when he loses it.

Produced by Y-Films, the film also marks  the directorial debut of Ashima Chibber who has previously worked as Shimit Amin’s First AD on Ab Tak Chappan and Chak De India. Ashima was also the first assistant director to Imtiaz Ali on Rockstar.

As Jab Tak Hai Jaan is the biggest release ever for a Yash Raj Films production with over 42 screens just at Cineworld Cinemas in the UK in addition to several screens at Odeon and Vue  cinema chains, the trailer will reach a nationwide audience from 13th November onwards.

“People will really like Jab Tak Hai Jaan ” – Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan releases on the same day as Ajay Devgn’s Son Of Sardaar in UK cinemas next Tuesday and the superstar says he is amused with the row over the two films, especially when everything had been sorted almost a year ago.

Ajay Devgn has filed a complaint with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) alleging that Yash Raj Films, the makers of JTHJ, have been blocking the release of his film SOS in certain theaters in India.

According to Khan, the release date was locked a year ago and the screens were also booked than. “I find it amusing. This has been decided since a year. They (makers of Son of Sardaar) must have also known, so what is the problem then? If you have delayed, then it’s not our fault. I just find it wrong,” he added.

The 47-year-old superstar also clarified that they have not forced any Indian exhibitor to showcase their film. “I don’t understand all this. I feel that the exhibitors represent the consumers to me. As a business person, I cannot assume that anything has been put on anyone by force. They chose the film,” he said.

Talking about his character in the film, Samar Anand, the actor said: “It is about a man who cannot die. Through him we show that love never ceases.”

He added: “I think people will really like the film, I don’t know in figures (box office collection).”

Post Jab Tak Hai Jaan, the actor will be busy with Rohit Shetty’s Chennai Express, which also stars Deepika Padukone and unites the pair on-screen after UK blockbuster Om Shanti Om.

Chennai Express is there at the moment. I am also discussing two or three more films at the moment,” said Shah Rukh Khan.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan is reportedly the biggest overseas release for any Yash Raj Films production and is slated to release in UK cinemas on 13th November 2012.

Spotted: Katrina Kaif, SRK and Anushka at ‘JTHJ’ Press Conference

On October 29th, popular actors Katrina Kaif, Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma came together for the very first time for a press conference to promote their forthcoming film Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

The event took place at YRF Studios and is the first promotional event post the sad demise of treasured director Yash Chopra, who directed Jab Tak Hai Jaan and filmed it extensively in the UK earlier this year.

Khan addressed the media present at the press conference and told them about the love and dedication that Yashji had for this film. The actor, who has worked in several Yash Chopra directorial ventures, said that they (the production house and the actors) want to celebrate the release of the film as the legacy of happiness that Chopra has left back.

The leading lady of the film Katrina Kaif and supporting actress Anushka Sharma also interacted with the press and shared their experiences of working with Shah Rukh and Yash Chopra.

Incomplete ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ song will not be shot – SRK

A portion of a song in Yash Chopra’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan was yet to be shot, but now will be left incomplete as the film crew has no desire to tamper with the signature style of the late filmmaker, said the film’s hero Shah Rukh Khan at a press conference in Mumbai today.

“Just a minute and a half of the song was left. He (Chopra) wanted to do it in Switzerland. We don’t have the heart to shoot that part now. We will make it impure if we had to shoot it,”  said Khan.

“The movie is ready for release. He (Chopra) had finished editing and the background mix was happening. The film was locked by Yash ji. The film which you will see has been entirely made by Yash Chopra,” he added.

The love story stars Katrina Kaif opposite Shah Rukh with Anushka Sharma in a supporting role and is all set to release on the November 13th, along with Ajay Devgn’s home production Son of Sardaar in UK cinemas.

Shah Rukh thinks that it is unfair to ask anyone to change their release date and therefore is fine with the simultaneous release of both the films.

“It is unfair to ask anybody to change the release date of their film. Everybody loves their films. Yash ji would have felt the same way. Films will always overlap and it is not fair for us to ask them to change it,” he said.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan is set to break records at the UK Box Office from 13th November 2012.

Watch: ‘Challa’ from ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’

The much awaited release of the music from JAB TAK HAI JAAN starts today with the release of the first song from the album, Challa. The song went live online exclusively on the YRF YouTube channel today.

Starring Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, the film has also brought together the award winning pair of A. R. Rahman and Gulzar, who orchestrated by Yash Chopra, have created some wonderful music for this romantic film.

As Yash Chopra, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, told Shahrukh Khan while in conversation with him, “This is my favourite song and it is your song in the film. It is the soul of the film – you belong to everybody but nobody is yours. This song is in Punjabi language and it has been sung beautifully by Rabbi Shergill. Gulzar Saheb has written the lovely lyrics. He has given words to my vision. Working with AR Rahman and Gulzar, is like working with magicians.”

JAB TAK HAI JAAN  releases in the UK on November 13th 2012.

‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ is Yash Chopra’s last film

Veteran filmmaker Yash Chopra, who turned 80-years-old on Thursday, announced in a chat with actor Shah Rukh Khan that he will not be directing any more films after Jab Tak Hain Jaan.

“I will not direct any other film after Jab Tak Hain Jaan. I have got lot of love in all these years. I think now the time has come to pay back. I want to help directors, actors, technicians who I could not help all these years,” said Chopra.

“This industry has given me so much. I am very much happy and satisfied with the film. This film has turned out better than my expectation. I don’t want to do anything else. My wife has been complaining a lot. I want to make her happy and enjoy my life,” he said.

Shah Rukh, who has been an integral part of Yash Raj Films for the past 20 years and stars in Jab Tak Hain Jaan with Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, said he was saddened by Chopra’s decision.

“I feel sad but great people decide when they want to finish. For years I have worked with Yashji. This is a moment of happy sadness. We are happy that we are part of that film which made you happy,” said Khan.

Terming it a “moment of history” for himself, Shah Rukh said he felt very touched and “can’t question it anymore”.

Chopra started his career as a director in 1959 with Dhool Ka Phool and in 60 years in the industry, has given many hits including Waqt, Silsila, Chandni, Dil Toh Pagal Hai, and Veer Zara, among others.

About his decision to make Jab Tak Hain Jaan, Chopra says this film was a gift for him from his eldest son Aditya Chopra, adding that his son had promised to serve as his assistant and fulfil all requirements.

“He has been a wonderful assistant. When I decided to make this film I thought my soul should be in this film,” Chopra said.

The music of the film is given by A.R. Rahman and lyrics have been written by Gulzar.

“They are geniuses and magicians according to me. There is a certain pattern of how music is made and they changed this pattern. Gulzar’s poetry gave words to my vision,”  said Yash Chopra praising them.

Yash Raj Films will release Jab Tak Hai Jaan in the UK on 13th November 2012.

Watch: ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ Trailer

Yash Raj Films has released the trailer of Yash Chopra’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan on YouTube.

In the film, Shah Rukh plays an army man named Samar Anand in the film. He looks dapper as usual, but it is undoubtedly his lover boy smile that leaves the endearing touch. Add to that Katrina’s chic looks and Anushka’s bubbly, cheerful and energy-packed demeanour, the film surely looks inviting, and expects to bring audiences to theatres in huge numbers upon its release in November.

The trailer opens with Shah Rukh dressed in an army man’s uniform, riding a bike in the breathtaking landscapes of Ladakh. And Gulzar’s deep poetry adds to the beauty of the backdrop.

Scenes of Katrina in floral gowns and Shah Rukh’s intense gaze at her on London’s streets give the touch of romance, as do his parts with Anushka amid the scenic beauty of Kashmir.

There is drama, love, passion and the trailer hints at a sense of vengeance in Shah Rukh’s character, who walks amid random bombings towards the end. It looks like a case of a classic love triangle, but leaves a lot more to guess.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan is special for many reasons. It marks the return of Yash Chopra to direction after seven years after Veer-Zaara, Shah Rukh’s trademark romantic avatar, and it has Gulzar’s inimitable poetry, Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman’s melodies and shots from Kashmir.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan is scheduled to release in UK cinemas on 13th November 2012 through Yash Raj Films.
