Interview: Sidharth Malhotra talks about ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’

Sidharth Malhotra in Hasee Toh Phasee UKBollywood actor Sidharth Malhotra speaks to BollyNewsUK about his second Bollywood film, Hasee Toh Phasee.

Produced by Dharma Productions and Phantom Films, Hasee Toh Phasee, is set to release in UK cinemas on 7th February 2014. The film also stars Parineeti Chopra and Adah Sharma in pivotal roles.

Your second film is co-produced by Karan Johar who directed your first film. Did he offer you Hasee Toh Phasee?
The offer actually came from Phantom Films (Anurag Kashyap, Vikas Bahl and Vikramaditya Motwane). It all started when Phantom Films wanted to co-produce a movie with Dharma Productions and they had enquired about me. From that enquiry, Karan gave me the script of the film and told me to read it and if I like it, he said that we will go further. I read it and being just one film old, I guess you can’t really figure out everything just by reading a script or your instincts aren’t great yet. I have now started meeting the directors when I read scripts which began with Hasee Toh Phasee. The film has a lot of quirky stuff like the heroine eating toothpaste, getting stuck on the love seat up in the air and a lot of other quirky things that audiences will see when they watch the movie. I met the director (Vinil Mathew) and I was sold after meeting him as he is very quirky himself in real life. Vinil has a lot work under his belt as an ad director. I think, just meeting him was the one thing why I did the film.

Hasee Toh Phasee UK Release

One can guess from the trailer that it’s a love story where the boy meets the girl and they fall in love. What else is the film all about?
That is correct. You know, films of the rom-com genre are the toughest to promote and market. Of course, every rom-com is different but everyone already knows the ending which is similar for our film (laughs). Hasee Toh Phasee is different in a way because our characters are not how people would imagine them to be. We don’t play the typical hero and heroine. Every family has the not so successful kind of boy and that is my character in the film. He is a very confused boy who doesn’t know what to do in life. He runs an unsuccessful event management company and is pressured by his family to earn a lot of money. Actually, he has to earn a certain amount of money in the film. He thinks he is cool, but he is not. He is one of those confident kind of guys but still very emotional and correct. My friends from Delhi are like that as they get a lot of pressure about their work. Then my character meets Parineeti, who is also not very popular in her family. She comes to Mumbai and meets my character and that is what the film is all about. It’s a story of how they meet for seven days and how they interact as it’s not love at first sight. It becomes very intriguing as they spend more time together and find out weird things about each other. It is a rom-com but our characters are not what audiences would usually expect from this kind of a film.

Your first co-star Alia Bhatt just said that she is not confident about the fate of her second film at the box office. Are you worried about box office success?
Well, of course, there is that aspect. But what I am more concerned about is pulling off a solo film. I am also hoping for a little appreciation in terms of acting abilities and hope that people feel that I can play variations and characters as it’s very different from Student Of The Year. The money aspect comes in much later. I think, initially you need to focus on making a good quality product. It’s Vinil Mathew’s first feature film who has to prove his directing abilities and my first solo hero film and I have to prove my mettle as an actor. It will hopefully make money but I don’t think we need to stress about it. It’s not the kind of film where we spent an extravagant amount of money and need to worry about recovering the costs. My concern is that audiences like my character, the performances and feel that we have done something different and new, yet at the same time convincing.

You sound more confident and less shy from your Student Of The Year days…
Yes, for some odd reason I have been getting this feedback from a lot of people. Maybe I was taking my character too seriously or maybe because of Karan Johar as no one else speaks in front of him and in front of Varun Dhawan (laughs). Hopefully, people will also feel a difference when they see me in Hasee Toh Phasee.

You also look much younger in some scenes…
Yes, I had to become leaner for the film and I may look younger because of the hairstyle. This is actually a film where I am playing a character that is my age, someone in his twenties, unlike Student Of The Year. I guess being leaner and not going to the gym for the film also made me look younger.

Sidharth and Parineeti - Hasee Toh PhaseeHasee Toh Phasee is quite a fun title…
It’s an apt title because the film is only about the couple. In all honesty, the title isn’t really connected to the film though in terms of the storyline (laughs). It sounds very commercial but the film isn’t really an all-out commercial film and far more muted and subtle in performances. We actually had another title when we started the film and Hasee Toh Phasee was suggested by one of the producers, Vikas Bahl.

The music album is being liked but people are really talking about your dance song ‘Shake it like Shammi’ .
Yes, we have three dance tracks and three romantic songs in the film. There is always pressure when performing for dance songs. Shake it like Shammi is almost like a solo song for me. I would also like to clarify that Shake it like Shammi is not a tribute to Shammi Kapoor. People keep writing about it as a tribute because of the ‘Shammi’ in the song. It’s just a lyrical use of the name. The character that I am playing is not that cool that he could shake it like Shammi. It’s his attempt to shake it like Shammi to impress a girl. It’s not like Badtameez Dil where the guy is cool and can do a full-on item song performance. I think it’s come out in a fun and interesting way. I hope everyone likes it.

During Student Of The Year, Karan Johar said that dancing is something you need to focus on. Did you spend a lot of time rehearsing for Shake it Like Shammi?

Remo D’Souza choreographed the song and was aware of that. We did a lot of rehearsals. Usually we don’t have a lot of time to rehearse. I was filming for something else but was rehearsing over night for five days for the song. It always helps to have more rehearsals as you will be more comfortable with the steps. I was quite conscious of it myself as I personally didn’t like the way I performed on the songs in Student Of The Year. I think, it also comes from the fact that I was never trained in dancing. My training began on the job. I learnt and picked up dancing as I was doing the film. It was tough for Shake It Like Shammi and Remo did make me rehearse a lot. We have some interesting steps and shots and hopefully the song will work with audiences.

Sidharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra - Hasee Toh PhaseeWhat is your definition of love?
It’s odd to sum up love in a few words or sentences. But for me, love is spending time with someone, being understanding of what the other person needs and being secure. I hate somebody being insecure and not giving me space, but then again, I think that is all men (laughs). There should be no pretense to it and can’t have any hidden agendas. To be in love with someone, it has to be an honest relationship and a lot of friendship. If you can have all these things and still enjoy the time you spend with someone, that is love. It also tells you a lot about a person if you go and spend some time alone with somebody. If you can manage to take break while you are dating and go away somewhere where you only have that person to talk to, that tells you a lot about how good your chemistry is.

Sidharth Malhotra impresses Anurag Kashyap

Sidharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra - Hasee Toh PhaseeOne film old Sidharth Malhotra charmed several women with his looks in Student of the Year in 2012 and now filmmaker Anurag Kahsyap is impressed with his acting skills.

The 29-year-old will be seen with Parineeti Chopra in Vinil Mathew’s directorial debut Hasee Toh Phasee, which releases in UK cinemas on Friday, 7th February 2014.

“Sidharth is fabulous in the film and the kind of restraint and focus he has shown in ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ is impressive. He is so real and believable to the extent that I did not expect it from him,” Kashyap said in a statement.

According to a source, the Gangs of Wasseypur director is writing a film keeping Sidharth in mind.

“While SOTY (Student Of The Year) established Sidharth’s fan base, Hasee Toh Phasee is here to introduce Sidharth Malhotra-the actor. Just two films old, the actor has managed to impress some of the biggest names in the industry, the latest being Anurag Kashyap who is very impressed with Sidharth and is keen on writing a film keeping him in mind,” said a source.

“Hasee Toh Phasee hooked me completely” – Parineeti Chopra

Actress Parineeti Chopra, who will essay the role of a mad scientist in her forthcoming film Hasee Toh Phasee, says the movie kept her ‘hooked’.

Hasee Toh Phasee hooked me completely. I had to stay very focused. It is very easy in a romcom to either play a shy or a bubbly girl with a love story in the backdrop along with lovely songs and climax,” Parineeti said in a statement.

Directed by Vinil Matthew, the movie also features Sidharth Malhotra in the lead role. Matthew is all praise for the actress, who made her Bollywood debut with Ladies vs Ricky Bahl.

“Parineeti was my first choice for the role of Meeta as I felt that she alone could pull off the quirkiness that the character required. She is quite a hard-working actress and has done a great job with this film,” he said.

Produced by Dharma Productions and Phantom Films, Hasee Toh Phasee will release in UK cinemas on 7th February 2014.

‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ kicks off

Sidharth and Parineeti - Hasee Toh PhaseeSidharth Malhotra began shooting for Hasee Toh Phasee with co-star Parineeti Chopra on Thursday 18th April. “Nothing like facing the camera,” said Sidharth excitedly for his second screen outing.

Elaborating more on his role, he plays a more relatable character in this film. “It isn’t an over-the-top role . And unlike my previous film Student Of The Year, where I played a student, I play my age and am shown as a middle-class working man,” said Sidharth.

Also admiring co-star Parineeti, Sidharth said “Parineeti has lot of spunk, energy and there is a good give-and-take with her” and admitted that her role had “more quirkiness” to it.

Parineeti who is working with Sidharth for the first time opinionates Sidharth to be “a superb co-star” who “never gets worked up”.

Talking about her character she adds, “My character is quite a difficult one. I deliberately choose roles that make me nervous. I do a lot of homework and until I get it right, I don’t give up”.

Both Sidharth and Parineeti are happy about working with debutant director Vinil Mathew, a veteran ad filmmaker.

“It didn’t feel like the first day of shoot because he is so sorted and knows exactly what he wants. He made us rehearse a lot during a two month workshop before shooting began”, revealed Sidharth.

“Also our producers, Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane and Vikas Bahl visited us on the sets. We will have enough people to give their inputs on the film’s creative,” he added.

Hasee Toh Phasee, co-produced by Dharma Productions and Phantom Films, releases  on 24th January 2014.

Interview: Parineeti Chopra talks to BollyNewsUK about studying in the UK, movies and more

Bollywood star Parineeti Chopra at Manish Malhotra Fashion Fundraiser in London for The Angeli FoundationBollywood star Parineeti Chopra spoke to BollyNewsUK ahead of walking the ramp for Manish Malhotra’s show in London last month.

You studied in Manchester before joining the film industry in Mumbai. How were your days here?
(Laughs) I still miss my days here. I love what I do right now; acting. My university days were just really special. The time I spent here was my first interim independent life experience, which I really loved. I was lucky enough to be in a great city. Manchester is very student friendly and I every time I come back, I have to go there because I have great memories of the place.

Did you have to keep it a secret that you are related to a well-known Bollywood star (Priyanka Chopra)?
All my close friends knew that I am related to Priyanka because I showed it off proudly. At least all mt best friends at University always knew it. There was not any problem. But yes, it did spread after a while and people would ask me questions about her. However, when I come back here now, it’s very different because they used to say that my sister (cousin) is an actress and today I am an actress. It’s very different but still exciting.

You are in London to walk the ramp at Manish Malhotra’s charity fundraiser for The Angeli Foundation. How did that come about?
I am one of the few lucky actresses to be associated with Manish Malhotra. I have walked for him thrice, in three different shows, in Dubai, Delhi and Mumbai. I am also associated with the Mijwan foundation in India, which also helps the girl child. Malnutrition and girl children are two causes that I am associated with, in India. When The Angeli Foundation show happened, Manish called me for it. I did not have to think about it because it is a cause I completely support and a designer I know and always works for good causes. It was also in a city that I love (laughs). I decided that I have to be here.

Bollywood star Parineeti Copra stuns audiences at Manish Malhotra Fashion Fundraiser in London for The Angeli FoundationAre nervous to walk the ramp in London?
No, I am not nervous (laughs). I am very excited. I never thought I will come back here for work. I never thought I will be recognised here. It is winter and I am wrapped up, but still there were a few people who recognised me. Last time, when I came to London in summer, it was just surprised that so many people recognised me. I used to walk these same streets four years ago in a very different world and frame of mind. Today it’s very different but positive. I thank God for that. I was living here alone and whenever I came to London it was with my friends or family. I did everything without thinking. Today, there are certain places I have to think twice about, before visiting. I have to always think about how I am dressed. But if these things would not happen, I would be very depressed. As an actor, you look for recognition. If I would not be recognised, I would be very depressed.

Ishaqzaade did not release in the UK. Were you disappointed?
Of course, you should ask YRF why they did not release it here (laughs).

An international cut was to be released in the overseas market. It has not happened so far. What is the update on that?
Frankly, I am not in a position to say what is happening with the international cut. I am aware that there was supposed to be a second release. However, with newcomers like Arjun and I, it was a huge risk to release it in the overseas market even though it was a big budget film in the same week of release as India. Hence, Aditya Chopra, Avtar ( YRF – International) and the international distribution team decided not to release it here. Why the international cut has not come out, only the international distribution team will be able to tell you (laughs). If I think selfishly, only as an actor, I would have loved it to release everywhere. The film has done extremely well in India and people abroad have managed to see it either on DVD or legally online, which is great. If there have been releases with newcomers after that, they had more confidence to release them abroad. I think, Ishaqzaade started that and I am very proud of the fact (laughs). I hope the international cut is released very soon.

The title of your next film with Sidharth Malhotra is quite fun and unique; Hasee Toh Phasee (If she smiles, she is mine)
(Laughs) Yes. They are talking about me obviously.

Sidharth and Parineeti - Hasee Toh PhaseeIt should be the other way around because you have a lovely smile.
(Laughs) So it should be him when I smile. I think, I’ll be doing that in the film (laughs). I think, titles always need to create interest because that is the only thing out there before anything else.
Everybody is saying good things about it and it fits into the film really well. I wish I could tell you more about the film but I am not allowed.

What other films are you currently doing besides Hasee Toh Phasee?
I have a three film deal with Yash Raj Films. I am currently shooting the third film, directed by Maneesh Sharma with Sushant Singh Rajput. His film Kai Po Che just released. I am shooting for the film immediately when I go back to India. I start Hassee Toh Phasee in mid-April and finish it in in July or August. I then start Shaad Ali’s film in August. There are two more films that are locked but I can’t talk about.

The film directed by Shaad Ali is with Ali Zafar right?

Yes, Ali Zafar plays the second lead but I am paired opposite Ranveer Singh. There will be two guys and me (smiles).

You turned down a film with Akshay Kumar..
Yes, that film was offered to me but it was not a script I wanted to be a part of. It was not something I wanted to do because there was not much to do for the girl. I want to work with Akshay one day because he is also one of my favourite actors. I will work with him one day.

Your cousin sister Priyanka Chopra has made her foray into music as a recording artist. I saw a video of yours singing a song from Ishaqzaade. Is singing something you want to pursue later on in your career?
You know, sometimes I love singing more than acting. I have been singing since I was three. She came into the music world in a big way. If I get an offer like hers, if that ever happens to me, I would definitely take it up. I would love to playback for myself one day. Singing is my passion.
