Dharma Productions has released the first song from the much-talked about film Gippi.
The song titled ‘We are Like this Only’ is a fun-filled song featuring Riya Vij and her school gang . The music of the film has been composed by Vishal & Shekhar.
Directed by Sonam Nair, the film stars Riya Vij, Divya Dutta, Doorva Tripathi, Arbaz Kadwani, Jayati Modi and Taaha Shah. Gippi is produced by Hiroo Yash Johar and Karan Johar.
Divya Dutta will be seen in cinemas in Karan Johar’s Gippi this May. Divya plays Gippi’s single mother in the film and says she is inspired by her own mother.
Ask Divya more about it and she says, “Yes. My role in Gippi is that of single mother who’s more of a buddy to her daughter. She’s not a stereotypical mom but crazy, yet strong and emotional. I did see a lot of my mom in my character. I lost my father when I was seven. My mom brought me and my brother up. Though I missed Dad, she never let us feel there was something missing in our life. She is a doctor and a government officer at work and a fun mom at home.
“We have done the craziest things together. Through the terrorism days in Punjab, when everything was so engulfed in fear, mom was this fearless and professional, in her dealings with all those who came to her for medical help and checkups and then little me would hide behind her dupatta praying no one shoots us! I wonder now, why she never thought of marrying again as she was so young, pretty and lonely when dad passed away but she said that her children were her world and she didn’t neeed anyone else.
“She used to write lovely poems and then throw all that in the dustbin. My brother would collect them and when we read them, we realised that our strong and fun mom was vulnerable too! Some years ago, we compiled those papers and published two books on her poetry and short stories and gifted her on Mother’s Day as a small token to my biggest inspiration!”
Lalit Modi’s niece Jayati Modi is all set to earn her share of the limelight this may as she makes her Bollywood debut. The 16-year-old will be seen in Karan Johar’s upcoming film – Gippi playing Shamira.
The young actress, who plays a teenage girl in school, bagged the role in the film thanks to social media. “The auditions were conducted through Facebook and Jayati happened to know about it via her friends. She registered in Delhi with a group of friends but everyone auditioned except her,” says a source.
Turns out director Sonam Nair noticed her in the crowd. “When Sonam asked her why she wasn’t auditioning, Jayati said she was not sure about it. But when Sonam insisted, she went ahead and not only auditioned but also bagged the role,” adds the source.
According to Sonam, Jayati was perfect for the role. “ She was not b****y but had the right attitude that was required for her character. She fit the part of ‘Shamira’ naturally. In real life as well she is very much like her character. She is intelligent, good with sports and extra- curricular activities and very popular in her school.” sums up the debutante director.
Adding another feather in her cap Divya Dutta, now has started work on her first book. Soon to be seen in Karan Johar’s Gippi she started working on her book while shooting for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.
Ask an elated Divya and she says, “During the Chandigarh outdoor, I liked how a woman’s story I was writing, was turning out. While it’s a work of fiction, personal experiences form an important part of one’s writing. Acting and writing are the two best professions. In acting, you express all that your character goes through; in writing, you can express yourself.”
Divya hopes to release her book by the end of this year. She was earlier also associated with writing for newspaper columns.

Karan Johar is all set for his new movie Gippi. It is a simple movie about a 14-year-old girl (played by 13-year-old Riya Vij), who falls in love with a hunk (played by Taaha Shah) in her school. It also has a maximum number of newcomers, all from Delhi. They shot during their summer vacations last year.
It’s one of the least expensive projects of Dharma Production and it is directed by Sonam Nair who was an assistant director in Ayan Mukherji’s Wake up Sid.
This movie is different from other Karan Johar movies, usually romantic films and family entertainers that he produces and directs.
Calling Gippi a small film with a large heart, KJo feels that the story of Gurpreet Kaur, aka Gippi, is one that many will relate to.
“Gippi is a new kind of film and it is unusual for us to venture into that space. I hope it gets all the love it deserves. The script took me back to my growing-up years. Everyone has a Gippi in them and I’m sure people will connect with the character. Small films need large strategies. And we’ll be going all out for this one. It has been translated very sensibly,” said Johar.
About Sonam, KJo says, “Ayan told me about this script being lively. When I started reading it, I found it was a page-turner. And the next morning, I wanted to make the movie. Sonam, who is the first woman director on board a Dharma project, is vibrant and fun herself. She has the spark to make great fun films.”
Speaking about the music composed by Vishal-Shekhar, he added, “They have come up with a spunky soundtrack. Just like the character of Gippi, the music had to be kick-ass.”
