Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures backs ‘Udta Punjab’

Shahid KapoorOne of the most eagerly anticipated films of the year, Udta Punjab has now received a massive studio backing from Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms.

Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, Udta Punjab features Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Punjabi superstar Daljit Dosanj, who will be making his Bollywood debut with this film.

Udta Punjab, which revolves around the dark drug market of Punjab, marks the association of two creative powerhouses – Phantom Films And Balaji Motion pictures. According to sources, Ekta was so impressed with the concept that when she heard it, she immediately called Madhu Mantena, who is a producer at Phantom Films to discuss a possible partnership. At that time, Phantom was in talks with many other production houses, but Ekta’s drive and passion easily made her stand apart and the deal was inked.

Commenting on the Association, Vikramditya Motwane says “Balaji were partners with us on our very first Phantom production. It’s an emotional relationship and we’re delighted to be collaborating with them again on Udta Punjab. It’s a script, a director and a cast we’re very happy with & we’re excited about the way it’s come together.”

Ekta adds “Udta Punjab is one film I’m most excited about. I’ve always admired the work Phantom does and collaborating with them on a project that boasts of such fantastic talent is exciting.”

Udta Punjab stars Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Diljit Dosanjh and Alia Bhatt.

Interview: Ileana D’Cruz speaks about ‘Happy Ending’

Happy Ending UK ReleaseIndian film actress Ileana D’Cruz will be seen in UK cinemas this Friday, 21st November 2014, in Happy Ending. Having worked in Telugu and Tamil cinema, the actress made her foray into Hindi cinema with 2012 blockbuster Barfi! opposite Ranbir Kapoor and alongside Priyanka Chopra. The 27-year-old actress has since worked with the likes of Shahid Kapoor and Varun Dhawan and is extremely excited about her new venture, produced by Saif Ali Khan’s Illuminati Films.

Happy Ending is directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. and also stars Govinda, Saif Ali Khan, Kalki Koechlin, Ranvir Shorey, Preity Zinta and Kareena Kapoor Khan. The much awaited rom-com will release in UK cinemas through Eros International in UK cinemas.

Here the actress talks to Sunny Malik about the movie, working with Saif Ali Khan and being friendly with Kareena Kapoor Khan…

How are you feeling about your upcoming film, Happy Ending?
I am extremely excited because the film is very different from the films I have done in the past. Barfi! was completely different and Main Tera Hero was a wholly commercial film with a little over the top humour. Happy Ending is very modern. If I may say so, it has very intelligent humour. It is more casual and conversational. The acting that was required of me was very different from films like Main Tera Hero. It was strange and took a little while as it was very new to me. I am excited because I loved the way the film has shaped up. Happy Ending, I think, will appeal to Indian and overseas audiences.

How did the film come about for you?
I was very excited when I was offered the film because I have loved the films Illuminati (Saif Ali Khan’s production house) has produced. They have made very slick comedies and shot them beautifully. They promote the films really well too. The music is very important to them. I was looking forward to the doing the film without knowing the story. When I heard the script, I was pleasantly surprised. I wasn’t expecting such a good role.

IleanaTell me more about your character…
The heroine in the film is at par with the hero. It’s a very sassy role and not a typical Bollywood damsel in distress heroine. My character is an author who writes novels but doesn’t believe in them. She doesn’t believe in love or happily ever after. She is the type of girl who asks the guy just before they make out, “You aren’t going to fall in love with me, right?” There were times where I felt that I was not doing much as my character keeps a straight face a lot of times. It was a bit nerve wrecking. I am glad I waited and chose to do this film.

Saif takes a little time to open up. How was your experience interacting with him in the beginning?
I had this stupid impression that he was going to be exactly like I have seen him in his films. That was quite stupid of me considering I am part of the film industry. I was expecting a chirpy goofy guy. He was quite normal and very polite. I kept to myself on the sets because I figured that he is reserved and doesn’t like chatting too much. Unfortunately, he took that as me being incredible formal on the sets. One day we ended up talking at one of those parties we had on the sets. He came up to me and asked me why I am so aggressive and defensive? Ironically, I became very defensive and questioned him what was wrong with him as I am not defensive at all (laughs). We had a nice conversation and we just suddenly broke the ice. We got to know each other and got comfortable. It was a very good working relationship. I find it hilarious when he gets angry even if it is for two seconds. I didn’t take him too seriously, so it was good (laughs).

He also compared you to Rani and Kajol…
I was quite shocked when he said that. I take is as a very big compliment. I don’t know if I agree with him or not. They are brilliant actresses.

Kareena Kapoor Khan, who has a cameo in the film, said that you have become friends while filming in the US…
I didn’t have any scenes with her unfortunately but she spent some time in Detroit with us and we got to know each other. We bumped into each other during breakfast and it was a really nice atmosphere. We just chatted and she is aver normal person I love that about her. She has no hang-ups, is simple and I think, she liked the same about me. We got along really well. I don’t know if we are friends because we haven’t spent as much time together. We are definitely very fond of each other as people. She has handled herself very beautifully considering the many year she has been in the industry. I think, I was expecting a different person and was surprised that she is a such a lovely person. I can’t say we are friends but we are definitely friendly.

Happy Ending is out in UK cinemas on Friday, 21st November 2014.

From Student to Killer : Haider

Vishal Bhardwaj’s attraction for Shakespeare is undeniable. Earlier, he made Maqbool, which was an adaptation of Macbeth, and then Omkara, which was his version of Othello.

Now, he has adapted Hamlet into his upcoming film Haider, which is famous for being Shakespeare’s toughest play, but it did not discourage Vishal Bhardwaj from adapting it, in which Shahid Kapoor has many diverse looks, from his long hair to going totally bald.

When asked Vishal Bhardwaj about it, he said, “Shahid goes through an emotional journey in the film, where he starts from being a simple student in search of his father, grows his hair long and learns that his father has been probably killed and then almost becomes mad to finally taking his revenge. When he came to know that I was adapting Hamlet, he was keen to play the character of Hamlet, who is Haider in our film and within a second I asked him, ‘Will you go bald or not?’ So that was a prerequisite for the role.”

Further asking filmmaker, what attracts him most about Shakespeare, he said, “His stories have timeless human drama. His stories may be 400 years old, but yet, the human conflict is the same. Human beings may have progressed, but the inner self is still 400 years old.”

Haider, starring Tabu, Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, and Kay Kay Menon, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, produced under the banner of UTV Motion Pictures, is slated to release in UK cinemas on 2nd October 2014.

Teri Meri Kahani

Kunal Kohli’s next, tentatively title Teri Meri Kahani has been shooting in England since last month. Leading actress Priyanka Chopra only arrived a day before the first day of the shoot, after wrapping up a cameo in Shah Rukh Khan’s RA.ONE.

Shahid Kapoor who plays the leading hero in the film was already in London for a shot vacation. The 30-year-old actor was often seen shopping around in the West End and indulging in pan-Asian noodles at restaurants.

The first UK schedule started in Stratford upon Avon on the 22nd July and was wrapped up in five days.Scenes for the movie were filmed outside town pubs, on the river, at the bandstand and outside Shakespeare’s birthplace.

Teri Neri Kahani is a story of a young couple, Krish (Shahid Kapoor) and Radha (Priyanka Chopra) who fall in love. According to Mr Bahri, the producer of the film, it was essential for them to shoot in Stratford, birth place of William Shakespeare, as references are made to him in the story.

“We came here to do a recce and as we walked into Henley Street we just knew we had to film here. Stratford as a location has never been seen before in Bollywood,” he told the Stratford upon Avon Harold, a local newspaper.

On last Saturday filming took place at the Old Thatch Tavern. The scene involved the Jab We Met actor getting ‘arrested’ and taken to a ‘police station’ (the tourist information office). Scenes were also shot at the bank of river Avon in a boat where the couple fell asleep together after an all-night party.

The Bandstand was used to film the all-night party on Monday evening and shooting continued until the early hours of Tuesday in Bards Walk. Kunal Kohli, the director of this love story also filmed some scenes outside the Birthplace of Shakespeare on Tuesday night. On Wednesday, the last day in Stratford, the crew filmed in the empty Royal Shakespeare Company’s Courtyard Theatre where both actors performed on stage portraying their roles respectively.

The cast and crew has since moved to Nottingham where they will continue their second UK schedule until the 13th of August. The actors started shooting at the prestigious University of Nottingham on Friday, the 29th July. They filmed in Nottingham and Long Eaton with Priyanka Chopra until the 8th of August. Shahid Kapoor and new actress Neha Sharma will continue filming until the 12th of August 2011, where one day of shoot will also take place in Leeds.

Most of the crew will be leaving the UK on the 13th of August 2011.

Bollywood stars hang out in London despite riots

Bollywood glitterati Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Ali Zafar, Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma descended into London a few days ago. Unbeknownst to them, the city was in its most dangerous time in decades, when riots spread across the capital.

Shah Rukh, Ranbir and Anushka arrived on the 8th of  August 2011 to attend the logo and new identity  unveiling   of Hero Motocorp (formerly known as Hero Honda). The high-profile corporate event was also attended by Oscar award-winning music composer A.R Rahman, American singer Akon and former tennis player Boris Becker.

The event was held at The O2, London on Tuesday, the 9th of August 2011. All three actors rehearsed for their speeches and performances a day before on Monday. While Ranbir and Anushka took time out to do some shopping in the West End, Shah Rukh did not leave his residence except for his rehearsal.

Ranbir Kapoor posed with bikes, King Khan performed with Akon and gave a brilliant speech and Anushka performed with several dancers to entertain the audience at the event. After attending the event, Khan met up with good pal Priyanka Chopra, who was in the UK for a film shoot.

The 7 Khoon Maaf actress wrapped up her shoot for Teri Meri Kahani in Nottingham on the same day Khan, Kapoor and Sharma arrived in London. She immediately took off for London and was there for three days. A source close to the project has informed us that the remaining schedule of the film with Shahid Kapoor and upcoming actress Neha Sharma will be wrapped up on the 12th of August in the UK. The next schedule will be in Chandighar, India.

Another source has revealed that Priyanka and Shah Rukh had meetings with the owners of Cineyug, a concert and event management company while they were in London. They have apparently agreed to do a show here soon. It might be a promotional concert that Shah Rukh is planning for his upcoming sci-fi flick Ra.One, but details are being kept under the wrap at the moment. Priyanka has since left London and started the shooting of Burfee in India.

Actor and singer Ali Zafar, who made a sensational debut with Tere Bin Laden in Bollywood has been vacationing in London too for a couple of days.

I can assure you all, that all these actors are/were safe from the riots happening in the UK. I met Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra during their stay in London. Check out these pictures:
