Bipasha Basu in London - Bollywood Showstoppers (4)Top Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu and Esha Gupta will be walking the ramp for a special collection at the most extravagant celebration of 100 years of Indian Cinema in aid of Pratham, India’s largest education NGO working to improve learning levels amongst underprivileged children.

The event is set to be a star-studded affair with a host of British Asian celebrities such as Gurinder Chadha and Preeya Kalidas who have also confirmed their attendance.

Guests will experience a unique collection which is inspired by the three main eras of fashion in Indian Cinema, spanning from 1913 to 2013. They will be taken on a journey of mesmeric panache and distinctive style from every iconic period in Bollywood including a black & white, colour and a pattern era.

The event will also include a ‘jugalbandi as performance art’ from top Indian contemporary artist Manav Gupta (listed amongst the top ten in India by the FT) and widely regarded as a maverick genius. For the first time in London, he will be translating a Sarod performance by Pt. Wajahat Khan LIVE on canvas in front of the audience in stroke play that has no parallel.

Starting his career as a costume designer for films, Bollywood gave Malhotra a creative platform to revolutionise the Indian fashion industry. He has dressed the crème de la crème of Indian celebrities and his reputation also extends beyond the subcontinent with International celebrities including Demi Moore, Kylie Minogue, Reese Witherspoon, Karolina Kurkova, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell counting him as one of their favourite designers.

On lending his support to Pratham Malhotra said: “I am glad to be associated with Pratham, which helps educate underprivileged children in India, a cause which means a lot to me. September is the start of the Indian festive season and I’m excited to celebrate it in London with my 100 years of Indian Cinema fashion show. Bollywood and fashion are both very close to my heart, my journey as a costume designer to a couturier during the last 23 years has been an emotional experience and I’m happy to be sharing it on an International stage”.

Proceeds from ticket sales and an exclusive live auction will go towards the Pratham Institute which focuses on providing young people with the employability skills needed to address India’s growing need for skilled manpower. Between now and 2025, about 250 million young people are estimated to enter the Indian workforce, while only 5% of them aged 20-24 have obtained vocational skills through a formal training system.

Roy Martins, Board Director of Pratham UK said “Manish is an inspiring individual who has achieved success through sheer determination. We welcome his support and hope that his success will inspire the young minds that Pratham aim to ignite through the funds raised at this event”.

Will Ameesha go desi for Cannes?

Ameesha Patel - Shortcut RomeoAmeesha Patel is excited about walking the red carpet at the  Cannes Film Festival. Her upcoming film ‘Shortcut Romeo’ which also stars Neil Nitin Mukesh and Puja Gupta will be premiering at the prestigious film festival on 22nd May at the French Riviera. To have the perfect look on the day, Ameesha has teamed up with Manish Malhotra and plans to have a desi look.

Commenting on her preparations for Cannes, Ameesha says, “It is a huge honor for me to be representing our cinema at Cannes. I am not going there as a brand ambassador. I am going there for my movie and that is a big deal. Manish and I have decided that since I am representing the country on a global platform, it would be perfect to be dressed in something that’s truly desi. Nothing looks better on an Indian woman than a sari or lehenga. I have to walk the red carpet in the morning and the premiere is at night, so there will be two outfits.”

Talking about Ameesha’s look, Manish says, “Keeping in mind Ameesha’s complexion and personality, we have given her something very Indian, yet ‘red carpetish’. Black and white, being classic colours, have been incorporated in her outfit that is high on Kashmiri and Chikankari work. We have also kept in mind the summer trends internationally.”

Shortcut Romeo is directed by Susi Ganesh and will release on 21st June, 2013.

Interview: Parineeti Chopra talks to BollyNewsUK about studying in the UK, movies and more

Bollywood star Parineeti Chopra at Manish Malhotra Fashion Fundraiser in London for The Angeli FoundationBollywood star Parineeti Chopra spoke to BollyNewsUK ahead of walking the ramp for Manish Malhotra’s show in London last month.

You studied in Manchester before joining the film industry in Mumbai. How were your days here?
(Laughs) I still miss my days here. I love what I do right now; acting. My university days were just really special. The time I spent here was my first interim independent life experience, which I really loved. I was lucky enough to be in a great city. Manchester is very student friendly and I every time I come back, I have to go there because I have great memories of the place.

Did you have to keep it a secret that you are related to a well-known Bollywood star (Priyanka Chopra)?
All my close friends knew that I am related to Priyanka because I showed it off proudly. At least all mt best friends at University always knew it. There was not any problem. But yes, it did spread after a while and people would ask me questions about her. However, when I come back here now, it’s very different because they used to say that my sister (cousin) is an actress and today I am an actress. It’s very different but still exciting.

You are in London to walk the ramp at Manish Malhotra’s charity fundraiser for The Angeli Foundation. How did that come about?
I am one of the few lucky actresses to be associated with Manish Malhotra. I have walked for him thrice, in three different shows, in Dubai, Delhi and Mumbai. I am also associated with the Mijwan foundation in India, which also helps the girl child. Malnutrition and girl children are two causes that I am associated with, in India. When The Angeli Foundation show happened, Manish called me for it. I did not have to think about it because it is a cause I completely support and a designer I know and always works for good causes. It was also in a city that I love (laughs). I decided that I have to be here.

Bollywood star Parineeti Copra stuns audiences at Manish Malhotra Fashion Fundraiser in London for The Angeli FoundationAre nervous to walk the ramp in London?
No, I am not nervous (laughs). I am very excited. I never thought I will come back here for work. I never thought I will be recognised here. It is winter and I am wrapped up, but still there were a few people who recognised me. Last time, when I came to London in summer, it was just surprised that so many people recognised me. I used to walk these same streets four years ago in a very different world and frame of mind. Today it’s very different but positive. I thank God for that. I was living here alone and whenever I came to London it was with my friends or family. I did everything without thinking. Today, there are certain places I have to think twice about, before visiting. I have to always think about how I am dressed. But if these things would not happen, I would be very depressed. As an actor, you look for recognition. If I would not be recognised, I would be very depressed.

Ishaqzaade did not release in the UK. Were you disappointed?
Of course, you should ask YRF why they did not release it here (laughs).

An international cut was to be released in the overseas market. It has not happened so far. What is the update on that?
Frankly, I am not in a position to say what is happening with the international cut. I am aware that there was supposed to be a second release. However, with newcomers like Arjun and I, it was a huge risk to release it in the overseas market even though it was a big budget film in the same week of release as India. Hence, Aditya Chopra, Avtar ( YRF – International) and the international distribution team decided not to release it here. Why the international cut has not come out, only the international distribution team will be able to tell you (laughs). If I think selfishly, only as an actor, I would have loved it to release everywhere. The film has done extremely well in India and people abroad have managed to see it either on DVD or legally online, which is great. If there have been releases with newcomers after that, they had more confidence to release them abroad. I think, Ishaqzaade started that and I am very proud of the fact (laughs). I hope the international cut is released very soon.

The title of your next film with Sidharth Malhotra is quite fun and unique; Hasee Toh Phasee (If she smiles, she is mine)
(Laughs) Yes. They are talking about me obviously.

Sidharth and Parineeti - Hasee Toh PhaseeIt should be the other way around because you have a lovely smile.
(Laughs) So it should be him when I smile. I think, I’ll be doing that in the film (laughs). I think, titles always need to create interest because that is the only thing out there before anything else.
Everybody is saying good things about it and it fits into the film really well. I wish I could tell you more about the film but I am not allowed.

What other films are you currently doing besides Hasee Toh Phasee?
I have a three film deal with Yash Raj Films. I am currently shooting the third film, directed by Maneesh Sharma with Sushant Singh Rajput. His film Kai Po Che just released. I am shooting for the film immediately when I go back to India. I start Hassee Toh Phasee in mid-April and finish it in in July or August. I then start Shaad Ali’s film in August. There are two more films that are locked but I can’t talk about.

The film directed by Shaad Ali is with Ali Zafar right?

Yes, Ali Zafar plays the second lead but I am paired opposite Ranveer Singh. There will be two guys and me (smiles).

You turned down a film with Akshay Kumar..
Yes, that film was offered to me but it was not a script I wanted to be a part of. It was not something I wanted to do because there was not much to do for the girl. I want to work with Akshay one day because he is also one of my favourite actors. I will work with him one day.

Your cousin sister Priyanka Chopra has made her foray into music as a recording artist. I saw a video of yours singing a song from Ishaqzaade. Is singing something you want to pursue later on in your career?
You know, sometimes I love singing more than acting. I have been singing since I was three. She came into the music world in a big way. If I get an offer like hers, if that ever happens to me, I would definitely take it up. I would love to playback for myself one day. Singing is my passion.

Photos: Parineeti and Urmila at Manish Malhotra’s London charity show

Manish Malhotra with Urmila Matondkar and Parineeti Chopra at Fashion Fundraiser in Londn for The Angeli FoundationIndia’s leading fashion designer Manish Malhotra last night stunned London fans as his breath-taking collection appeared on a London catwalk for the very first time.

The award-winning designer showcased his collection at the prestigious Grosvenor House Hotel in London’s Park Lane, in aid of The Angeli Foundation, a charity that works to empower the Girl Child in India, and in association with Dubai based Rivaage boutique.

The 450-strong audience at The Angeli Foundation Gala Fundraiser, were on their feet with rapturous applause as Malhotra’s Bollywood buddies Parineeti Chopra and Urmila Matondkar walked the ramp to support the designer and the cause.

As well as Parineeti Chopra and Urmila Matondkar, a host of British Asian stars also put on their glad rags and came out to support The Angeli Foundation and Manish.

Malhotra’s collection was organically Indian with Kashmiri and Chikankari work woven onto traditional silhouettes and styles such as the lehngas, his signature floor length anarkalis and lehnga anarkalis in colors inspired from 50’s such as exclusively dyed corals, pinks, blues.

The two leading ladies certainly did Malhotra’s collection justice. Ms Matondkar who opened the show was dressed in a beautifully fitted and styled navy lehnga woven with white chikankari, with Parineeti Chopra adding fabulous glamour to the finale in a glittering floor length, red and gold anarkali lehnga.

Malhotra selected The Angeli Foundation as the charity of choice for his UK launch after the horrific rape of Jyoti Singh Pandey in Delhi highlighted the shocking inequality and attitudes towards women in our country. The Angeli Foundation works to ‘Save the Girl Child’ and redress the balance for women who are treated as second-class citizens throughout their lives. From female foeticide to limiting healthcare and education in favour of male siblings, to bride burnings, unreported rapes and acid attacks, inequality exists from womb to woman.

He said of his support for The Angeli Foundation and the response on the evening: “I can think of no better partner to have worked with for my debut show in London. The Angeli Foundation works so hard at a grass roots level to change the lives of young girls in the hope that their voices will eventually be heard and that attitudes in our society will change. As celebrities, it is our role and responsibility to lead by example and if I can make some small change by lending my support to this invaluable case, then I have achieved something.”

Parineeti Chopra added: “As a former PR person I know the value of celebrity and how they can help raise awareness and start to drive debate and discussion. After the tragedy in December I don’t think there is anyone in our industry that doesn’t feel strongly about gender inequality and the terrible treatment of women. When Manish asked if I would walk the ramp for the Foundation, there was no doubt in my mind that it would be an honour to play a part in something so important.”

Ratika Puri Kapoor, chair of UK Chapter of The Angeli Foundation said of the event: “I have been overwhelmed by the support that we have received for The Angeli Foundation. As a small charity that is still in its infancy in the UK we needed to create a springboard that would help raise the issues around gender inequality in India and highlight the objectives that we have as a charity. There is no doubt that we couldn’t have raised our profile in any better way than with the support of Manish, Parineeti, Urmila and the amazing British contingent who I hope will take the message on further.”

The Manish Malhotra Fashion Extravaganza in aid of The Angeli Foundation and in association with Rivaage Boutique took place on Saturday 23rd February 2013 at the Grosvenor House Hotel. The event was sponsored by Air India and Exclusive Cakes4U.

Manish Malhotra to showcase first UK collection at Gala Charity Fundraiser

Manish Malhotra India’s leading fashion designer Manish Malhotra will be making his UK catwalk debut at a Gala Fundraiser in aid of The Angeli Foundation, a charity that works to empower the Girl Child in India, at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Saturday 23rd February 2013 in association with Rivaage Boutique.

The multi-award winning designer who has been leading the way with his stunning collections for the past 18 years has a client list that reads like the Who’s Who of the Indian film industry and includes the Prince of Bollywood Shahrukh Khan as well as former Miss World’s Aishwarya Rai, International artist Priyanka Chopra and former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen.

His reputation extends beyond the subcontinent, with his creativity and stunningly opulent creations having been seen on some of the most famous bodies from Hollywood including Demi Moore, Kylie Minogue, Reese Witherspoon, Karolina Kurkova, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell.

Malhotra shot to fame in 1995 as stylist and costume designer for Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (DDlJ) – one of India’s most successful films, and having created the costumes and styled over 50 films, he is widely acknowledged as the man to have changed the face of Asian fashion in Bollywood films.

Malhotra selected The Angeli Foundation as the charity of choice for his UK launch after the horrific rape of Jyoti Singh Pandey in Delhi highlighted the shocking inequality and attitudes towards women in India. The Angeli Foundation works to ‘Save the Girl Child’ and redress the balance for women who are treated as second-class citizens throughout their lives. From female foeticide to limiting healthcare and education in favour of male siblings, to bride burnings, unreported rapes and acid attacks, inequality in India exists from womb to woman.

Manish Malhotra & top models showcasing some of his stunning designsHe said of his support for The Angeli Foundation: “I work in an industry where women are revered and respected. I have had the privilege of dressing some of the most beautiful and powerful women in the world, but when I step out of the door and into the stark reality of India, I see the injustice and inequality all around me. The Angeli Foundation is providing an invaluable service to these girls and women. The charity helps them raise their self-esteem, confidence and ultimately value themselves enough to get a voice. Without women, I wouldn’t be where I am today and so I want to give what I can back to an organisation like Angeli that celebrates womanhood.”

Ratika Puri Kapur, chair of the UK Chapter of The Angeli Foundation said of Manish Malhotra’s support: “The Angeli Foundation was established in India eight years ago, but is in its infancy in the UK. The support of India’s most successful stylist and designer will help increase awareness of our work amongst the communities here and help us raise funds for these critical projects in India.”
