Over the years, Akshay has worked with Bollywood legends like Manoj Kumar, Rishi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Raakhee and Tanuja. While the actor co-starred with Manoj Kumar in the 1995 thriller “Maidan-E-Jung”, which also featured Dharmendra, he has also worked with Shatrughan Sinha in the classic “Aan-Men at Work”, Feroz Khan in “Welcome” and Rishi Kapoor  in “Namastey London” and “Housefull 2”. In addition, Akshay has also shared screen time with the legendary Amitabh Bachchan in “Ek Rishta,” “Aankhen,” “Ab Tumhaare Hawale Watan Saathiyo,”  and “Waqt-The Race Against Time,” amongst others.

While speaking to a noted publication recently, Akshay said: “There is so much to learn from them, and although I did not have many scenes with some, like Manoj-ji and Dharam-ji, I cherish the experiences.”

Fans of Akshay Kumar were in for a real treat this weekend when the superstar posted a shirtless selfie on a social networking site. Needless to say, Khiladi Kumar looks ripped and oozed machoness. This was also the actor’s first selfie ever.

In the picture, Akshay is seen showing off his muscular torso in a way of telling his brothers that “If I can do it so can you”. Wishing his fans a happy Sunday, the international icon tweeted:

Akshay Kumar is known as India’s undisputed fittest actor and has always promoted natural ways of achieving a healthy lifestyle and physical prowess.

His passion for fitness and martial arts is well known. The international icon was formerly a professional martial arts trainer in Bangkok before turning to acting. Akshay Kumar is not only a qualified Martial Arts Instructor but has risen in recent years to the prestigious accolade of Shihan — teachers’ teacher. Alongside his countless action films, Akshay hasamassed a wide array of martial arts qualifications including a sixth degree black belt in Karate and a black belt in Taekwondo. Even when not training for a specific film, Akshay keeps himself physically fit, with his exercises often starting as early as 5am.

The actor recently leveraged his sporting expertise in order to help women learn how to better defend themselves, with the launch of a Martial Arts Institute for women in Mumbai. The institute is set to provide three month long, free of charge, self-defense courses.

A gritty and tense thriller about the relationship between two brothers gone awry,“Brothers” is an official remake of the 2011 Hollywood film ‘Warriors’. It BROTHERS FIRST LOOK UKstars Akshay Kumar, Sidharth Malhotra and Jacqueline Fernandez in lead roles, and features veteran actor Jackie Shroff in a pivotal role.

The film is directed by Karan Malhotra of Agneepath fame and is produced by Karan Johar, under his Dharma Productions banner. In the film, Akshay will be seen playing Sidharth’s older brother —  who are both martial arts fighters — seeking victory in the ring.

Akshay Kumar had taken on the training of his co-star Sidharth Malhotra. The pair reportedly worked relentlessly on a gruelling fitness regime, both requiring highly controlled diets, prolonged martial arts training sessions and weight lifting.

Whilst working together, their goals were reportedly very different, with Sidharth needing to gain considerable muscle mass in a short space of time, whilst Akshay had to lose 10-12 kilos for his role, suggesting that Akshay’s character will have a far sleeker and trimmed look than more recent action films we’ve seen Akshay in.

Akshay’s social message hits the right chord

Gabbar is Back UK ReleaseRiding high on the success of Bollywood blockbusters “Gabbar Is Back” and “Baby”, international superstar Akshay Kumar says it feels really great to be appreciated by your audience and fans. ‘I am just so overwhelmed with all the love that people shower on me. I don’t know what to do… how to return their love. The more I try to give back, the more it multiplies. It is just unbelievable. They recently put a huge garland on my film’s poster. I want to say that I love them all’, Akshay told India’s leading national daily Hindustan Times recently.

Akshay has been flooded with calls and messages from not just his fans but also from politicians, who congratulated him for taking up the issue of corruption in his latest project “Gabbar Is Back”.

Akshay firmly believes that because the film was received well by so many fans, the social message in the film has also reached many people. “I do hope we all become anti-corruption at a personal level and instead of harassing a guy who jumps the signal, we put those involved in ghotalas of billions in the dock. Most of the incidents in Gabbar… are based on real-life incidents”  … the international icon was quoted as saying to Hindustan Times.

Running strong for the fourth week, Gabbar is Back is a mass entertainer where the actor plays the role of a vigilante. The film carries a strong message against corruption where the actor throws in some power-packed punches. Gabbar is a story of a common man, Ajay (Akshay Kumar) wronged by the establishment, who starts the Anti-Corruption Force (ACF) that aims to track down and cease the corrupt strata of society.

Akshay Kumar is India’s most bankable star and according to many close to Akshay, both professionally and personally, the secret to the actor’s enduring appeal, ongoing and recent box office success and longevity is his winning formula for choosing commercially viable films and his no-nonsense, ultra-professional approach towards his work. Akshay Kumar is one of the few stars in India who has consistently given a break to first-time directors, producers and newcomers.

The international  superstar has two other high profile films lined up for release later this year – Brothers and Singh Is Bliing

Gabbar is Back is on general release internationally.

Akshay Kumar feels Baby deals with an extremely relevant and topical issue

BabyIn a career spanning over 20 years, Akshay Kumar’s repertoire boasts multiple genres from comedy to action to drama and rather than chase superstardom, his focus has always been to be known as an actor. He says, “I don’t want to be typecast in any particular genre. I think no one can ask me this question that why do I only do the same kind of films because I have never done that in my career. I would like to be known as an actor and not a superstar. I don’t like the tag of superstar.”

Akshay says his upcoming thriller, Baby, deals with the serious issue of counter terrorism. He has once again teamed up with director Neeraj Pandey after the critically lauded and commercially successful Special 26, this time playing an undercover agent. “In today’s time, terrorism is a big issue. Every nation is facing this problem and we should all take this seriously and try to fight with it. The story of Baby is about that. There is a group of 27-28 people and their only mission is to finish terrorism from everywhere. And this group is still immature so the code name of their mission is Baby,” Akshay says.

The actor adds that the subject is very close to his heart. “Every film I do that is special for me. My father was in the army. So I know many things about the services and I find myself quite close to the army men. I feel very proud whenever I do an army based film,” he adds.

Gulshan Kumar presents Baby, a Neeraj Pandey film, a Crouching Tiger and Friday Filmworks production, produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Shital Bhatia, Cape of Good Films and Crouching Tiger, releasing on 23rd January, distributed in the UK by Filmonix.

Esha Gupta, goes ‘Beparwah’ for Akshay Kumar’s Baby

While the forthcoming Baby will be a unique film with no songs, Bhushan Kumar’s high-octane thriller has come up with a novel theme song. The track, titled Beparwah, reflects the theme of the film and is an ode to the attitude of its characters. The makers recently released the audio track, which is fast stirring a buzz on social media.

The gorgeous Esha Gupta, who represents sensuality and glamour that manifests itself in the tone and attitude of the film, shot for the theme song with the music composed by Meet Brothers. The song, which reminisces the various on-goings happening in one’s country, underlines the attitude of the film and, as the makers of the film have stated, history is made by those who give a damn, for those who think selflessly and put country first. A highly stylised set was created especially for the theme song with two distinct looks – one a pristine, angelic white setting and the other a sensuous and mysterious play with darkness. Both looks are plush, accentuated and perfectly capture the mood of the song.

Akshay Kumar supports Global Action/2015 campaign launch

Akshay KumarIndia’s leading global ambassadors comprising A-list actors, actresses, renowned directors, award-winning authors, dignitaries and esteemed public figures came together in an unprecedented show of unity on the 15th of January 2015 to show their support via Twitter and Facebook for the launch of the historic action/2015 campaign. The campaign, billed as one of the biggest global outreach initiatives in history to address world-changing issues of climate change, poverty and inequality, saw a massive outpouring of solidarity from celebrities such as actor Akshay Kumar, who was the first major celebrity to tweet his support for the campaign reaching over 7.2 million Twitter followers and over 14 million users on Facebook. He was joined by compatriots Sonam Kapoor, Malaika Arora-Khan, Pulkit Samrat, Kiara Advani, Mohit Marwah, Arfi Lamba, Chandan Roy Sanyal and Purab Kohli, author Chetan Bhagat, producers Ashvini Yardi (Grazing Goat Pictures)and Ritesh Sidhwani (Excel Entertainment), TV personalities Gautam Rode, sport stars Yuvraj Singh and Vijendra Singh to name some of the growing list of supporters.

The action/2015 campaign will garner further support on the 15th of January 2015, when an open letter, signed by such renowned activists as Indian actor Aamir Khan, will be sent to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to encourage further action by India to address such critical issues as poverty, climate change and equality. Other major names to sign the open letter include Queen Rania Al Abdullah, U2 frontman Bono, Hollywood actors Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Hugh Jackman, philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates, UK-Sudanese entrepreneur Mo Ibrahim, singer Shakira and 2014 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai among many others.

They issue a stark warning; that while leaders have a historic chance in 2015 to make progress on some of the greatest challenges of our time at two critically important summits, currently too few leaders are playing the leadership roles needed. They set out their fear that if this does not change, leaders could be “sleepwalking the world towards one of the greatest failures of recent history.” India, although a country emerging as a powerful and revolutionary force on the world stage, still worryingly accounts for one-third of the world’s poor.

The action/2015 campaign is a growing movement of more than a thousand organisations in over 120 countries, which is urging political leaders to honour the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) previously set when they meet at the global United Nations Summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda in September 2015, and the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP21 in December 2015. The campaign was announced by education activist Malala when she accepted the Nobel Peace Prize.

On the 14th January, action/2015 rolled out in New Delhi with a congregation of over 200 children, youth and members of CSOs along with the presence of Honorable Najma Heptullah, Union Minister of Minority Affairs, Amitabh Behar from Wada Na Todo Abhiyan, Shireen Vakil Miller, Advocacy Director, Save The Children, Kaveree Bamzai, Editor-at-large, India Today Group and child representatives like Ayonara Khatun from West Bengal.  In New Delhi, on January 15, a group of fifteen 15-year old teenagers will seek to meet the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sushma Swaraj, Minister for External Affairs. A group of fifteen 15-year old teens will also be meeting political heads (Governor, Chief Minister, Ministers) in 15 states on the same day with a set of key requests.

Baby UK Release

Q&A: Akshay Kumar talks about ‘Baby’

Mr Akshay KumarBollywood superstar Akshay Kumar talks about his forthcoming film ‘Baby’, which releases in UK cinemas on 23rd January 2015.

‘Baby’, a highly anticipated action thriller, sees Akshay reunited with director Neeraj Pandey, who teamed up on the critically-acclaimed film ‘Special 26’. The film releases worldwide and in UK cinemas on 23rd January 2015.

Baby’s a bit of a strange title name for such a serious and hard hitting film?
I was very surprised when I first heard the script but slowly I got to know about the importance of the title ‘Baby’ and realized that it could never have been anything else!

You play a Special Forces officer in ‘Baby’. Did you find your role similar to that of your role in ‘Holiday’?
It’s true that I am playing another Special Forces role, but the characters are very different. Holiday was a real mix of genres, crossing between thriller and rom –com but Baby doesn’t really have that light hearted side. My role in Baby, Ajay, is a grim brutal character, as if Virat from ‘Holiday’ had lost his sense of humour.  I did love that about Virat, he had two different sides to him, he was a really complex man. Yes, he had a social life and chased the girls, but he couldn’t ever switch off. I think that even my character in ‘Holiday’ had a line which he probably wouldn’t cross; Ajay is the sort of person who would do whatever was necessary to keep his country safe.

Would you be happy if your children became police officers?
If they did, I’d be worried non-stop about them but deep down, I’d be so proud. Serving your country and protecting it, there’s no better honour! The police and soldiers are the true heroes of India. Saying that, as long as they were happy in their job, I’d  support them.

What sort of physical preparations did you do for the film?
There were a lot of preparations I had to make for ‘Baby’. Physically, it was a very demanding film and so I upped my game in the gym! I do like to keep my body guessing so I love trying out new techniques and exercises. The most recent discovery I made are these heavy wooden beads I bought in Singapore.  I have 50 beads, which weigh about 2-3 kilos  . The aim is to move them around your neck, which seriously works your core. If you do it wrong, the beads will drop. It works your cardio, so when you finish, it tones you up from the inside out.”

BabyBaby sees you working with Neeraj Pandey- were you excited to be working with him again?
Definitely! When I knew he was on board, I knew I had to get involved in the project! It’s been great working with Neeraj again, we’ve got this crazy chemistry and I’ve got such respect for him! Neeraj Pandey is one of the most complex directors I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with, he’s calm but super intense! He demands the best from his team and he made it clear from day one, ‘work hard or the door’s that way.’
What I love most about this man, apart from his direct honest opinion and crystal clear vision, is how this man doesn’t shoot to impress, he’s not here to extravagantly blow your mind, he shoots to tell you a story, his only interest is to suck you into the trail he wants you to follow. I could follow this man till the end of the earth.

What was it like working with Anupam Kher?
An absolute honour – seriously, when I work with Anupamji, I am literally learning from the best. I have loved working with him – from ‘Special 26’ to ‘The Shaukeens’.

What were the shooting scenes in the desert like?
Quite crazy to be honest! It was 50 something degrees while we were out there so we just had to get it done as quickly as possible which wasn’t easy!
We needed rough desert terrain and an Arabian airport.  Plus, we just couldn’t have shot it like that in Mumbai. They won’t close a part of the street for you – they’d rather close the shoot.”

Where do you find the time to star in 3 or 4 films a year?
A lot of it goes down to hard work and organisation. I only spent 32 days on the set of ‘Baby’ and the whole film was filmed in about 50 or so days. That’s because Neeraj has his script in place. I know I’m doing four films a year while others are doing one per year, sometimes one in two years. But I do these films very easily with a lot of free time in hand. In fact, I’m the only actor who takes so many holidays. I take at least eight days off every three months and a long month-and-a-half’s vacation every year. So if I have time, what else do I do?

Akshay KumarWhat sort of themes does ‘Baby’ have?
There are a lot of messages that will be conveyed through Baby. We can see in the trailer that the film also tackles the issue of terrorism but I want people to watch the film and realize the other messages that we want to convey.

Overall how have you found 2014?
It’s been an absolutely fulfilling and busy 2014 and 2015 is gearing to be even busier.  I’ve got an interesting mix of film genres coming up from a thriller, drama,  to action, romance…I think it will be one of my most diverse years yet

Do you have any New Year Resolutions?
I don’t believe in making New Year resolutions. I believe in the simple philosophy of work hard, please my fans, do good work, & be a loving husband and father, and that’s it. I’m not displeased with anything that I do, I have no vices, no bad habits, there’s nothing I need to cut back on. I just bring in the new year with a happy family, & I try very hard to keep them happy, that’s all that’s important to me

Akshay Kumar’s Perfect film making Formula

Akshay Kumar - GabbarSuperstar status is achieved when an individual does what they do well, whilst making it look easy – and fans of international superstar Akshay Kumar may well have wondered exactly how the actor manages to balance making on average a record four films a year, with travelling the world to pursue numerous other projects and enjoying time with his family.

The star of the recently released, The Shaukeens, has recently revealed his carefully constructed formula for managing such a jam-packed schedule. It may be a surprise to hear that Akshay Kumar gets his 8 hours of beauty sleep, by choosing not to party and instead be asleep by 10pm. The actor’s day starts at around 5am – a time which suits Akshay as it means he can complete most, if not all of his work by 10am, allowing him plenty of free and work time.

Following each of his four film shoots a year, which last on average for 60 days at a time, Akshay Kumar ensures he takes a week long holiday with his beautiful wife Twinkle and two children, Aarav and Nitara. The rest of the year is spent completing other projects, honouring brand endorsements and enjoying what else life has to offer!

The actor, who recently wrapped filming of Baby, set to be released at the start of 2015, sums it up perfectly –  “You just need to make one’s time a priority, so you can make everyone else’s life easy. We’re only here once. If I played with time, there’s no way I could make 4 films a year and travel the world with my family. Respect time and time will be on your side. Abuse it and it will pass you by, along with all its opportunities.”

‘The Shaukeens’ is a laugh-at-yourself concept comedy

The Shaukeens UK ReleaseLaughing at yourself is always a tough job, especially on screen. That is what differentiates The Shaukeens from other comedies in the same genre. Writer Tigmanshu Dhulia and director Abhishek Sharma designed the film on the basis that all actors in the movie would have a blast laughing at themselves.

As Sharma says, “Akshay plays himself but with a twist – while he talks about staying healthy in public, he is an alcoholic in real life.”

Lisa Haydon’s character is almost that of a stalker fan. “I am not like that at all in reality but it was good to make fun of myself,” she laughs.

The three Shaukeens in the film – Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor and Piyush Mishra – had to bring to the fore their ‘tharki’ side to stay true to their characters.

Abhishek Sharma reasons, “Hollywood does it all the time. I feel the audience in India too is ready for a comedy of this kind where actors have dared to laugh at themselves.”

The Shaukeens is produced by Murad Khetani, Cape Of Good Films and Ashwin Varde. It releases in UK cinemas this Friday on 7th November.
