Disney submits new version of ‘Selfiee’ trailer to BBFC

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures UK has submitted a second version of the trailer for their upcoming Hindi title Selfiee.

The film is the second Dharma Productions title which the UK distribution arm of Disney will release in the UK after 2022’s Brahmastra Part One: Shiva.

Disney will distribute the film in UK cinemas via 20th Century Studios UK for India’s Star Studios, a subsidiary of Disney Star, part of The Walt Disney Company.

The original trailer of the film was classified by the British Board of Film Classification with a 15 rating on 30th January 2023. According to the guidelines implemented in the UK,  no one younger than 15 may see a 15 film in a cinema.

The new version of the trailer has been classified with a 12A rating on 6th February 2023.  Films classified 12A and video works classified 12 contain material that is not generally suitable for children aged under 12. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult.

Disney has likely resubmitted the trailer with changes in order to get a lower rating so that the trailer can be played in UK cinemas with the record-breaking Shah Rukh Khan starrer Pathaan.

Incidentally, the trailer of Pathaan was also classified with a 15 rating. Yash Raj Films, the distributor, chose to make cuts to scenes of strong violence in order to receive their preferred 12A classification.

Selfiee tells the story of Bollywood superstar Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar) needs to obtain a new driving license, from RTO officer, Om Prakash Agarwal (Emraan Hashmi), a die-hard fan of Vijay. But a misunderstanding leads to a war of words between the two, eventually escalating into a feud which is played out in front of the media and the entire country.

Directed by Raj Mehta, director of Good Newwz (2019) and JugJugg Jeeyo (2022), the film is much awaited to kickstart a fine 2023 featuring the fresh duo of Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi in the lead.
