UK Box Office: ‘Varisu’ opens at No.7 – second highest opening of all time for a Tamil title

Tamil-language action drama Varisu debuted at No.7 last weekend 13-15th January 2023 , achieving the second-highest opening of all-time for a Tamil title, behind only Ponniyin Selvan: I.

Starring Vijay and Rashmika Mandanna, the drama tells the story of an entrepreneur’s life is transformed when he reunites with his estranged father, much to the chagrin of his brothers. The British Board of Film Classification has classified the film in two languages, Tamil and Telugu, both with a 12A rating. The Telugu dubbed version released with the title Vaaradudu.

The film opened at a very impressive £648,230 in the UK released by Ahimsa Entertainment, whilst the film took £ 19,978 in Ireland, where Akshaye Traders released the film.

Tamil-language Ajith Kumar starrer Thunivu also opened last weekend across 91 locations, collecting a high weekend collection of £273,277, with a site average of £3,003. The film landed at No.9 on the official Box Office UK charts.

Yash Raj Films’ latest release Kuttey starring Arjun Kapoor had a disastrous opening with just £10,062 from 27 locations, with a site average of £372.67.

The Indian studio is still raking in the fruits of their previous release Drishyam 2  still showing across 10 locations in its 9th weekend. The film collected £1,309 last weekend, with a site average of £130.94. The total gross of the film stands at a healthy and impressive £454,079.

Other Indian films which opened during the weekend 13-15th January include: Waltair Veerayya – £123,174 from 55 locations; Veera Simha Reddy – £95,423 from 57 locations; Malikappuram – £9,689 from 10 locations.
