Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan: I has emerged as the highest grossing Indian title at the UK Box Office in 2022. The Tamil-language epic period action drama film stars Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, and Jayaram.
Ponniyin Selvan: I released in just 119 locations in the UK with an additional 21 locations in Ireland in a mix of three languages; Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi.
Just four original Hindi films made the list of Top Ten Indian films at the UK Box Office in 2022 with Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva securing the second spot as Disney’s widest-ever Bollywood release in the UK.
Laal Singh Chaddha took the fourth spot even though it remains the widest-release of all times for a South-Asian title in the UK with 350 locations distributed by Paramount Pictures UK. Paramount’s other Indian release of 2022 Gangubai Kathiawadi starring Alia Bhatt landed at number six on the list, despite opening during Covid-19 restrictions.
Yash Raj Films, one of the oldest Indian studios based in the UK, claimed the tenth spot with Drishyam 2, still running in select cinemas.
K.G.F: Chapter 2 has made the list twice as two distributors released the film in the UK, one with the original Tamil version and three additional Indian languages, and the other just the dubbed Hindi version. The cumulative Box Office earnings of both releases would bring the total to £1,112,307, which would bring the film at number 2 on the list.
Pakistani film The Legend of Maula Jatt remains the highest grossing South-Asian film of 2022 with a total gross of £1.43M at the UK Box Office.
Big budget Hindi films such as Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (T-Series), Jugjugg Jeeyo (Dharma Productions), The Kashmir Files (Zee Studios), and Vikram Vedha (Reliance Entertainment) failed to make the list.
