UK Box Office: “Ponniyin Selvan: I” breaks opening records

Vikram Aishwarya Rai Bachchan Jayam Ravi Karthi Trisha JayaraMadras Talkies & Lyca Productions’ Ponniyin Selvan: I, directed by Mani Ratnam, has broken opening weekend records for an Indian title at the UK Box Office in 2022 upon its release on 30th September. 

Released by DG Tech, the film is a Tamil-language epic period action drama film starring Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, and Jayaram. 

Ponniyin Selvan: I released in 119 locations in the UK with an additional 21 locations in Ireland via 2G Entertainments, in a mix of three languages; Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi. 

In the UK the film raked in £745,386.45 from 119 locations, with a high site average of £6,263.75. In Ireland, the 21 locations brought in £54,730.37, with a site average of £2,606.21. 

The cumulative opening weekend gross of the film in the UK and Ireland stands at £800,116.82 and opened at No.5 on the UK Box Office chart. 

Reliance Entertainment gave its new Hindi title, Vikram Vedha starring Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan, a wide release with 134 locations. Clashing with Ponniyin Selvan: I, the film only took £137,189, with a low site average of £1,023.80. 

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures UK’s Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva crossed the £1M mark at the UK Box Office in its 4th weekend. The collections have considerably slowed down due to new Indian releases with the film only screening in 34 locations over the weekend 30th Sept – 2nd Oct. The film took £12,868.57, with a site average of only £378.49. The total now stands at £1,026,102.40. It currently ranks as the highest grossing Hindi film, and second-highest grossing Indian title at the UK Box Office in 2022.
