UK Box Office: Top Ten Indian Films Mid-year 2022

BollyNewsUK can exclusively reveal the top ten Indian films at the UK Box Office for the first half of 2022. The data is compiled and provided by Comscore, the industry’s most trusted provider for Box Office data and rankings worldwide. 

The list below is compiled from all Indian titles released in UK cinemas this year between January and end of June.

Please note Dharma Productions’ Jugjugg Jeeyo is still running in UK cinemas and the list does not reflect its total UK gross.

UK BOX OFFICE DATA IS COMPILED AND PROVIDED BY COMSCORE

1. RRR

The critically acclaimed and worldwide Box Office hit RRR has topped the mid-year list, even though it failed to make the £1M mark. The film made its debut on the UK Box Office at number 2, a first for an Indian film.

The fictional drama collected £650,204 from 160 locations in its opening weekend, with a site average of £4,064, making it the highest opening weekend for an Indian film in the pandemic era. It released in UK cinemas by Dreamz Entertainment Limited.

The opening weekend includes limited evening previews from Thursday, 24th March 2022 with an impressive gross of £238,313. It was released in the UK in five Indian languages, including at selected IMAX sites across the UK.

Directed by India’s biggest director SS Rajamouli of Baahubali fame, the cast of his new film includes Indian superstars Ram Charan and Jr NTR, as well as Bollywood legend Ajay Devgn, and global talent Alia Bhatt. Also starring are British actors Ray Stevenson and Olivia Morris, Irish actor Alison Doody, and American actor Edward Sonnenblick.

RRR collected $65.6 million worldwide in its opening weekend, including international previews, becoming the number 1 release of the weekend globally. 

RRR is available to stream on Netflix UK in Hindi and on ZEE5 in Telugu.

2. Vikram

Vikram starring Prabhu Deva, Kamal Haasan, Fahadh Faasil  is an action thriller written and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and produced by Raaj Kamal Films International.

Distributor DG Tech LTD released the film in three versions; Tamil, Telugu and Hindi on 3rd June 2022.  Vikram collected an impressive £ 399,426 from 67 sites nationwide in its opening weekend, with a site average of £5,962 landing at Number 6 on the official UK Box Office Charts.

Vikram is available to stream on Hotstar UK.

3. Gangubai Kathiawadi

Paramount Pictures UK’s second Bollywood release, Gangubai Kathiawadi, made an impressive debut at the UK box office on 25th February 2022.

The film brought Paramount a collection of £243,848 (including limited previews) from 150 sites in its opening weekend (25.02- 27.02), with a site average of £1,626. 

The Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial starring Alia Bhatt in the titular role has collected a higher gross in its opening weekend than the last two hit Hindi films, Sooryavanshi and 83, making Gangubai Kathiwadi the most successful Hindi debut since the start of the pandemic. It also remains the highest grossing original Hindi title at the UK Box Office this year so far.

Gangubai Kathiawadi is available to stream on Netflix UK.

4. Beast

Beast is an action comedy film starring Vijay and Pooja Hedge and was released in UK cinemas in Hindi and Tamil by Big Films Limited. The film opened in an impressive 158 sites nationwide in its opening weekend (15.04-17.04), raking up a total of £505,648, with a site average of £3,305.

Directed by Nelson, Beast has been classified with a 12A rating by the British Board of Film Classification.

5/6. K.G.F Chapter:2

The much-awaited sequel to K.G.F released in UK cinemas in multiple languages. Distributor DG Tech Ltd (Sun Media) released the Tamil, Kannada,  Malayalam, and Telugu versions while Cinestaan AA  distributed the Hindi version of K.G.F Chapter:2.

Starring Yash, Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon, the film has been classified with a 15 rating by the British Board of Film Classification. 

In its opening weekend (15.04-17.04), the film released in 89 locations by DG Tech Ltd, collecting a total gross of £357,038, with a site average of £4,012. The Hindi Version released in 71 locations by Cinestaan AA Distributors earning £231,782, with a site average of £3,265.

The cumulative UK gross of all releases crosses the £1M mark, making it the highest grossing Indian Film at the UK Box Office so far and pushing it to the top of the list.

K.G.F Chapter:2 is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video UK.

7. The Kashmir Files

Zee Studios’ controversial film The Kashmir Files opened in 18 sites (11.03-13.03) and made its debut on number 15. The Vivek Agnihotri directorial added more sites, a total of 52, in its second weekend after a slow start and collected a very impressive £142,982 in its second weekend (18.03-20.03), with a site average of £2,750. 

The film turned out to the be surprise Indian hit at the UK Box Office this year and is available to stream on ZEE5.

 

8. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2

Kartik Aryan starrer Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 had made waves at the Indian Box Office but the opening in the UK was below average in comparison to this year’s released Indian titles such as Gangubai Kathiawadi, RRR, Beast, and K.G.F. Chapter 2. The film eventually picked up due to strong word of mouth.

Released by Rising Star Entertainments, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 collected a total of £ 123,161 from 60 locations in its opening weekend (20.05-22.05), with a site average of £2,053.

The film received a 12A rating from the British Board of Film Classification opening cinema doors to much younger audiences in comparison to recent Indian titles, which were mostly classified with a 15 rating.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 is available to stream on Netflix UK.

9. Saunkan Saunkane

Saunkan Saunkane is an Indian Punjabi-language, romantic comedy film directed by Amarjit Singh Saron. The film stars Ammy Virk, Sargun Mehta and Nimrat Khaira and was released in UK cinemas on 13 May 2022.

Released by White Hill Productions, the film opened in 36 locations earning £103,279. 

The film is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video UK.

Dharma Productions’ Jugjugg Jeeyo has made the Top Ten list, even though it’s still running in UK cinemas and will have moved up the rankings with its total gross till date by now.  It entered the UK Top Ten Box Office Charts at No.6 in its opening weekend.

The film starring Anil Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, and Kiara Advani released in UK cinemas nationwide on 24th June in 107 sites by distributor Moviegoers Entertainment. It collected a decent £163,648 with a site average of £1,529.

The film is also the second highest opener at the UK Box Office for an original Hindi film in 2022 so far.
