One of the most compelling Bollywood heist dramas of 2013 and based on real life events, Neeraj Pandey’s Special 26 releases in the UK and Worldwide on 8th February 2013, presented by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Tip Top Entertainment.
The crime action drama stars Akshay Kumar, Kajal Aggarwal, Jimmy Shergill, Manoj Bajpayee, Anupam Kher and Divya Dutta, with music by M.M. Kreem and Himesh Reshammiya.
Set in the early 80’s, Special 26 is inspired by a real life collective of con artists who pulled off a string of intelligently calculated robberies targeting famous business personalities and politicians by posing as CBI or Income Tax Officers, on the pretext of conducting raids to uncover hoardings of black money.
Synopsis: A daring day light robbery at Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri still remains one of the most sensational unsolved cases in the history of the Mumbai police. The incident dates back to 1987, when 26 so-called probationary CBI officers entered the jewellery shop and the mastermind strode straight to owner Pratapbhai Zevari, introduced himself as a Research and Analysis Wing Officer and produced a search warrant.
He ordered that the close-circuit camera be shut and that the jeweler surrender his licensed revolver. No telephone calls were allowed as the recruits took cash and samples of ornaments for investigation. The mastermind was never seen again. The Mumbai police are still clueless about the mysterious conman who knew only too well how the intelligence agency functioned.
Special 26 is based on many such true yet unreported incidents and tells the thrilling tale of how a gang of con artists plan and execute perfect crimes across the length and breadth of the country. The police are close on their heels and a brilliant cat-and-mouse game unfolds, with each side’s gain only proving to be temporary, as the master criminal minds are pitted against the diligent perseverance of the law enforcers. Only the side that can out-think and out-maneouvere the other will emerge victorious.
