Aamir Khan is coming back to UK cinemas with Reema Kagti’s much-awaited Talaash, after he was seen in a rather short role in Dhobi Ghat two years ago.
The 47-year-old actor, often called a perfectionist and cinematic genius, starred in Bollywood’s highest-grossing film ever, 3 Idiots with Kareena Kapoor Khan, who also features in his latest suspense drama – Talaash.
In a 60 seconds chat with Bollywood reporter Sunny Malik, Aamir Khan talks about his latest offering, co-stars Kareena and Rani and shooting the film at London’s Pinewood Studios.
Since you are producing Talaash with Excel, is co-producing something that will follow with all films that you will do in the future?
No, it would be a case to case basis. My production houses also produce films which I don’t star in.
Talaash is a supense drama, not a thriller, as Reema Kagti told me. Do you think it is difficult to promote such a film in the UK since family films and rom-coms tend to do better here? Would you say the film is a risk in that way?
All the films that I have done have been risk takers be it Rang De Basanti, Lagaan or Taare Zameen Pe.
Do you think, with the controversies that surrounded the film initially of being similar to another film and the constant delay of release can create a negative image in the audiences’ mind or is any publicity good publicity?
There has been only one change in the release date from June to November. We all felt that it was important to have Talaash as a solo release and not while Satyamev Jayate (Truth Alone Prevails) was on air.
Was it your decision to cast Rani in the film, as one of the producers?
Reema took the decision to cast her. Yes, she is a friend but I am known to keep both separate.
One expected you to come together with Excel Entertainment for a “feel-good” film like Dil Chahta Hai or their recent production Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara. Why did you decide on doing such a serious film?
I do films that I instinctively like.
It seems like Kareena has a strong role to portray in the film. Do you think that is the case because the film has been written by a female director and that today Indian female actors are given better roles than in the past?
No, it purely depends on the story that we are telling.
You shot for 4-5 days in London at Pinewood Studios with Kareena Kapoor Khan. Was the whole experience slightly scary for you since you are not a good swimmer?
I have learned swimming for Talaash and shooting under water sequences was scary.
You also used Facebook to tell your fans that you watched an IMAX film in London while you were here shooting for the film. What do you like to do when you are in the British capital?
Everything. I like to walk by the lake and enjoy the evenings.
You spent quite a lot of time with the crew, producers and Kareena at the wrap-up party in London.. One imagines you as someone who does not really party or drink much.. Did you make an exception after the shooting of Talaash was over?
I don’t drink. However, I am a social person and hang out with friends.
What’s next for Aamir Khan the actor, the producer and the TV host?
Dhoom 3, Rakumar Hirani’s P K and Satyamev Jayate 2.
Talaash is out on Friday, 30th November 2012, nationwide in the UK.
