Historically known as Tongues on Fire and, more recently, London Asian Film Festival, the festival synonymous with programmes featuring strong, South Asian feminist content will run in London, Leicester, Manchester and Edinburgh from 14th – 25th March, now known as UK Asian Film Festival.

The Opening Gala Dinner on 14th March at The May Fair Hotel, will host an In Conversation with Mahira Khan”. On 16th March at Regent Street Cinema, London the actress will conduct a Q&A following a screening of social issue film, Verna. Interview: “Filming in London was very exciting” – Sidharth Malhotra

Sidharth Malhotra is the newest Bollywood heartthrob on the scene. The 33-year-old actor made his debut in 2012 with Karan Johar’s ‘Student Of The Year‘ and has built up quite a fan following through his performances with UK hits such as Kapoor & Sons and Brothers

Hailing from an Indian Armed Forces family, Sidharth entered the film industry after working as a junior assistant director on the award-winning My Name Is Khan. He caught director Karan Johar’s eye, who then decided to launch Sidharth along with Varun Dhawan, son of director David Dhawan, and Alia Bhatt, daughter of renowned producer Mahesh Bhatt in Student Of The Year. The three actors shot to stardom in India even before their highly-anticipated debut film released.

Aiyaary (2)

Malhotra has since starred in hits such as Ek Villain, Ittefaq and A Gentleman. He is gearing up for his newest release, Aiyaary, also starring Manoj Bajpayee and Rakul Preet.

Speaking to BollyNewsUK, the actor discusses his new movie and filming in the British capital…

You must be very excited starting the new year with Aiyaary
Yes, every Friday brings in new excitement. The script and content of Aiyaary is very powerful and director Neeraj Pandey always showcases intelligent content in his films. Audiences will understand the reason why we’ve made the film, as it’s very relevant now. It’s a packaged spy thriller, which I’ve never done before, so it’s something new for the audience.

The title of Aiyaary is unusal. Was that intentional to make the film mysterious?
I believe that Neeraj Pandey has a knack for finding these words when it comes to naming his films. It was also very apt for the characters as we are playing intelligence agents in the film. Aiyaary means the art of trickery, and these guys definitely have that skill. It’s also a very intriguing title, which helps us.

Aiyaary (1)
Neeraj Pandey films usually share critical acclaim and box office success. Are you worried about the trend of 2017 where most movies didn’t perform well though?
No, I don’t worry about that. Every film has its own audience at the end of the day. When you sign up to do a film, you know the extent of the business it is likely to make. This is a thriller first of all, which doesn’t have the trappings of a commercial love story. It has a good subject which is relevant to the country and its youth. Also, looking at Neeraj Pandey’s track record, he has never had a film under-performing at the box office. Its more relaxing because of his past track record.

You disappeared from social media with the hashtag #SidsOffTheGrid leading up to first promotions of Aiyaary. What was that about?
(Laughs) We were just preparing audiences for what is going to happen when Aiyaary releases, as my character in the film goes off the grid. In my head, I wanted to see if people will miss me online. I was very happy to see that people were concerned, including you who messaged and called. It was very nice actually. I was back in two days, it was a fun activity.

Your last film Ittefaq was only promoted on social and digital media. However, some film studios are going back to the traditional marketing style. What do you feel works best?
The trend has really changed. It has more become about what happens on the Friday of release. Audiences want to know what the reports are, what their friends and family thought of the film, as it is an expensive experience to go to the cinema. The taxes aren’t helping either.  I believe more than marketing or public relations, it has become all about what the first day is like. Social Media has a massive reach. You can disseminate authentic information from your official accounts. There is no middle man and hence, misunderstandings are avoided. I feel, in a country like India, social media is still a new phenomenon and doesn’t have the same numbers as the US or UK. We must cater to the traditional formats of information as well. Audiences are shifting from TV and newspapers to online, albeit slowly. Although, Facebook has a great reach in India, which is great. Twitter and Instagram are fairly new, and you can’t only depend on these medium to create awareness.

Aiyaary (3)Was it distracting for you as an actor to shoot at popular tourist attractions such as Leicester Square in London?
We were filming on Oxford Street and London is always beaming with people. We were filming at 17:00, during high rush hour time. We didn’t want to lock down the area for the shoot as it was supposed to look authentic. That was a bit of an issue.
I was wearing a hood and was sweaty, as it was supposed to portray the middle of an action sequence. I was coming out of the Underground station and a steady cam was filming me walking out. During almost all of the takes, someone passing by would react to me being there. It took a lot of retakes and was a tricky situation as to whether we should announce that we are filming or just keep going as we were. We continued filming Guerrilla style and some of the fans were sweet enough to not stare into the camera during takes. It was interesting to shoot at an actual location with people around you not knowing about it.

Since the film was moved forward, do you believe the extra time you have to promote the film is a positive to take out of the situation?
We were always prepared to create good awareness for the film but, yes it does give us a bigger window now. We have been to Chandigarh, Amritsar and the Wagah border. It’s interesting as no one has spent so much time with the Armed Forces before for a film. It’s great to give them memories and I’m enjoying spending time with them.

Reliance Entertainment releases Aiyaary in UK cinemas on 16th February 2017.

Paramount Pictures UK to release ‘Padmaavat’ on 25th January 2018

Paramount Pictures UK announced 25th January, 2018 as the UK release date of ‘Padmaavat’, after a string of bans and threats in

India. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, ‘Padmaavat’ will release in 2D, 3D and is the first Hindi film to release in IMAX 3D release, albeit in a very limited release. It has been certified for general release by the British Board of Film Classification with a 12A classification. There will be no Tamil or Telegu release in UK cinemas.

Starring Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmavati, Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh & Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji.

Based on 16th century Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s epic poem Padmavat, the movie faced resistance from its early stages due to a misinformation campaign and rumour-mongering. Despite these challenges, the film that showcases the valor of Rani Padmavati, Maharawal Ratan Singh and the famed Rajput ethos of honour, bravery and sacrifice, has managed to overcome all odds; aided by the support of well-wishers from across the film fraternity, the government authorities and the society at large.

“Padmaavat is a cinematic masterpiece in every sense of the word. We hope that we will surpass the expectations of our fans from across the world. We are humbled with the immense support we have received from the government authorities, the Central Board of Film Certification and the entire film fraternity,” said Sudhanshu Vats, Group CEO, Viacom18. He further added, “Padmaavat is a story that’s inherently Indian in its context, ethos and values. In the past, international film-makers have presented Indian stories such as Gandhi, Life of Pi, The Jungle Book and others to the world. We believe that this is the right time for us to truly make in India and show the world a tale that every Indian is proud of.”

Ajit Andhare, COO, Viacom18 Motion Pictures said, “Padmaavat is our magnum opus – a tribute to Rajput valour created at a scale that will be a delight to watch on the large screen. The film will witness a mega-scale release across maximum screens, languages & formats covering 2D, 3D & Imax 3D in India & the world. It carries the trademark style of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, wherein each frame of the film is a timeless work of art. We have partnered with Paramount Pictures to distribute the film across select international markets including non-traditional territories. Padmaavat will create its own benchmark as an immortal classic when it releases across the world on the 25th of January.”

Sanjay Leela Bhansali said, “Padmaavat is a dream come true for me. I have always been fascinated by the stories of honour, valour and vigour of our great Rajput warriors that have been captured so beautifully in our literature and this movie is my homage to those glorious stories. I would also like to thank the entire film fraternity for supporting Viacom18 and Bhansali Productions through the entire production and pre-release phase and hope they like the film they so supported.”

Exclusive Sneak Peek in London: #Dilwale soundtrack

Sony Music Entertainment and Red Chillies Entertainments Pvt. Ltd. recently launched one of the most anticipated film soundtracks of the year, ‘Dilwale’ with a worldwide exclusive listening session of three tracks from the OST at the Sony Music headquarters in London. Shah Rukh Khan sent a video message for the event and music composer Pritam interacted with the UK media via video conferencing.

Dilwale will reignite the quintessential, romantic magic of the iconic Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan on-screen pairing for the first time since 2010’s worldwide hit, ‘My Name Is Khan’.

The soundtrack for ‘Dilwale’ has been composed by renowned music director Pritam, collaborating with lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya. The duo has previously come together to create hit songs for soundtracks such as ‘Cocktail’, ‘Barfi!’, ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ and ‘Dhoom 3’.

Dilwale Sneak Peek poster

‘Dilwale’ features a standout musical contribution and a wide variety of genres from key ballads to anthemic dance tracks that bring to life the truly unique and evergreen chemistry of Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan. Looking back over two decades in film, Bollywood’s favourite onscreen couple has always shared a backdrop of incredibly successful music, with classic hits from ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, ‘Baazigar’, ‘Karan Arjun’, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ and ‘My Name Is Khan’; still very much in the hearts and minds of Bollywood music lovers of all ages, all over the world. Not to forget the timeless Kajol-Shah Rukh Khan classic, ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’, which celebrates a landmark 20 years in cinema this month, making it the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema.

[tweet 661543584471076864 align=’center’]

Speaking about the launch Shah Rukh Khan through his video message said that it was a special day, as the music of a Bollywood film has never been sampled to the media in the past and that too even before the trailer has been released.

The three tracks previewed to the press at the event are titled ‘Gerua’, Manma Emotion Jaage’ and ‘Janam Janam’. The soundtrack of Dilwale will feature seven tracks in total.

Speaking to the media at the sneak peek event, Pritam said that Dilwale is a very special movie for him. “I have never worked on a full-fledged Shah Rukh Khan movie. I composed the music for Billu which featured SRK in a special appearance. Last year on his birthday, Shah Rukh told me that he was coming to me with something special. I was extremely excited as I have always wanted to work with him. Our generation has grown up idolising SRK-Kajol.”

Veeran Tha Dil Ka Jahaan
Jis Din Tu Daachil Hua

Duniya Ko Bhula Ke
Tumse Mila Hoon
Dil Se Nikli Hai Dua
Rang De To Mohe Gerua

” ‘Gerua’ is a romantic song picturised on SRK and Kajol in Iceland. It has been sung by Arijit Singh and Antara Mitra. I actually reworked the song after I saw the picturisation and added Bulgarian folk instruments in the track. When I found out that Kajol has been cast opposite SRK in Dilwale, I couldn’t sleep for one night. Then I stopped thinking about it. Their legacy is impossible to beat. This was the first romantic song that I played to them and they approved it straight away. The words in the song mean that ‘I should become a yogi in your love and leave the world’. We went through a few voices for Gerua but Arijit suits the track and Antara brought a freshness to it,” said Pritam about the love song ‘Gerua’

Manma Emotion Jaage

Chooriya Re
Gooriya Re

Tere Jalwa Dekha Tu
Mana Main Mausam Jaage Re
Dil Jaaga Re
Manma Emotion Jaage

Talking about this dance party song, Pritam said, ” This song has been picturised on Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon in a grand way. It’s a fun track and the main hook of the song is something that Amitabh Bhattacharya came up with.”

Janam Janam

Jaane Saath Chalna Yoohin
Kasam Kasam Aa Ke Milna Yoohin

Meri Subah Ho Tun Hi Ho
Aur Shaan Bhi

Teri Baahon Main Hoon Mere Dono Jahaan
Tu Meri Aarzoo
Tu Meri Aashiqui

Janam Janam

“After SRK and Rohit Shetty narrated the script to me, this was the track I composed on the next day. They instantly liked it as well. Janam Janam is truly the theme of the movie and is played whenever SRK-Kajol meet in the film.  While the film is a typical Rohit Shetty film, it also has a love story which is very important,” said Pritam.

‘Dilwale’ is directed by Rohit Shetty, whose last collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan, ‘Chennai Express’, was a runaway, global success. The film also features the crème of Indian cinema’s new generation talent, Kriti Sanon and Varun Dhawan, alongside a seasoned supporting cast of actors like Johnny Lever, Sanjay Mishra, Vinod Khanna, Kabir Bedi, Mukesh Tiwary and Varun Sharma.

Venky Mysore – CEO, Red Chillies Entertainments Pvt. Ltd. said “Music continues to be an integral part of Indian films and that of movies featuring SRK have always been received very well world over. With the help of Sony Music this time, we wish to present every Hindi film music lover with a musical brilliance in the form of ‘Dilwale’.”

Shridhar Subramaniam – President India & Middle East, Sony Music Entertainment said, “We are committed to make Dilwale the biggest Soundtrack in the International markets by putting together one of the most aggressive and innovative marketing campaigns. The pairing of Shah Rukh Khan with Kajol has had a special place in the hearts of millions and with the addition of two young heart throbs Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon we believe that the music of Dilwale will carry forward this tradition.”

‘Dilwale’ releases in cinemas on 18th December 2015. The film is produced by Red Chillies Entertainments Pvt. Ltd. and distributed in the UK by UTV Motion Pictures. Music is on Sony Music.

Dilwale set to release on 18th December

Interview: “Hollywood and Bollywood are very separate things” – Nargis Fakhri

Spy Nargis FakhriBollywood actress Nargis Fakhri can now be seen in UK cinemas in the new action-comedy film, Spy, also starring Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne, Miranda Hart, Bobby Cannavale, Allison Janney and Jude Law.

The gorgeous actress plays a small but pivotal role in the film and has a major action sequence with actress McCarthy in the movie.

Nargis, who was born in New York, made her Bollywood debut opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar and was most recently seen in Main Tera Hero with Varun Dhawan.

The 35-year-old star recently flew into London to walk the red carpet at the European premiere of Spy, held at Leicester Square, and caught up with BollyNewsUK ahead of her big night.

You have flown in from Kenya. What were you doing there?
Oh My God, I was saving rhinos (Rhinoceros). There is only one left. It was at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Nanyuki, Kenya. He’s the last male northern white rhino in the world. Can you imagine that there will be no more once he dies? There used to be twenty-thousand from the 1960s and now there is only one left. I was there to raise awareness because people should visit the place because it’s an once-in-a-lifetime experience. I was also trying to get people to donate as they’re trying IVF and it’s very costly.

TCopyright - Facebook SPY Movie (3)he last time you were in London to promote a movie was for Rockstar (2011). How has it been so far to be here for Spy?
Wow, that was such a long time ago. I love London and it’s always nice to be here, especially when the weather is nice. It’s really close to Mumbai too as it’s only eight-hours on a flight compared to sixteen-hours to New York or even twenty-four-hours to Los Angeles.

You are represented by CAA KWAN in India, formerly known as KWAN, who joined hands with CAA, one of Hollywood’s top talent agencies, a few years ago. Did ‘Spy’ happen through that association?
No, my agent in London DAA were handling everything in relation to Spy. I actually met Paul Feig, the director, in LA a while back. It was quite surprising that he knew about Bollywood and Indian cinema. He knew about the work that I had done. We were having a meal when he mentioned to me that he will be starting a movie and there is a role that he felt I was perfect for. He asked me whether I would have time for it. I said yes immediately.

Were you worried about how much screen time you’ll get in your debut Hollywood movie?
I have realised that Hollywood and Bollywood are very separate things. They don’t get each other. They have a different way of doing things. I was born in New York City and was exposed to American cinema from a young age. I have friends who are actors, writers and entertainers. I know how hard it is to get into the industry. It’s super hard. You have talented people struggling for years. Yes, same goes for Bollywood but you don’t get judged for having small part in a film in Hollywood. You can have a really small role in one film and be the leading actor in your next. It doesn’t work the same way in Bollywood. If you do a supporting role, you get pigeonholed and only end up doing that. In Bollywood you have to work with the big guys and that’s it. You can’t work with anyone else. I understand that but getting offered this part in Spy with this amazing director and cast was a no-brainer. It doesn’t matter how many minutes I’m on-screen or how big the role is, this is a big deal.

Was the experience more comfortable for you, compared to working in Hindi movies, because English is your first language?
It was but the sense of humour culturally is very different in India. I get the American sense of humour and even the British one. In Main Tera Hero, we have a scene where Varun sings a bhajan (devotional song) to the beat of Ranbir’s Badtameez Dil. I just didn’t get that (laughs). I really questioned everyone and asked how this is funny? Anupam Kher explained it to and had to associate it with something that I would understand. Then I said, “Oh, that’s funny”. With me, it’s sometimes lost in translation in Bollywood. I literally translate everything and I don’t get the jokes. Then someone has to explain it to me. I am the poor person that has the delayed reaction to a joke (laughs).

Spy Melissa

There is a major action sequence in the film between you and Melissa McCarty. Did you have to prepare a lot?
I had three days of choreography and quite some time over the day going over everything. There were still issues when we filmed it. I hurt myself a few times and Mellisa hurt me a couple of times too. But it turned out alright in the end.

Spy, released by 20th Century Fox, is in UK cinemas now.

This interview was first published in Asian Sunday Newspaper (National).
