UK Box Office: ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ fails to open big

Yash Raj Films released Pooja Entertainments’ Bade Miyan Chote Miyan as the big Eid release on 10th April. The film received a 15 rating from the British Board of Film Classification and stars Akshay Kumar, Tiger Shroff, Manushi Chillar, and Alaya F.

With Eid falling on Wednesday, 10th April, Indian films released mid-week to serve audiences with new content for the Muslim holiday period. All Box Office takings prior to Friday for a new release are considering “previews” under comscore data compilation. 

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan took just £91,825 from 199 previews on 10th & 11th April. The total box office weekend collections including previews stand at £195,020 from 208 locations, with a site average of just £938. This is remarkably low for such a wide release and an extended opening weekend. The film has also underperformed  in other key international markets such as United States/Canada, Australia and Germany. 

The film also failed to be the top grossing Indian title at the UK Box Office during its opening weekend, which is usually expected for any major film releases with multiple A-List actors and released by a major studio such as Yash Raj Films. 

Zee Studios’ also released a title on Eid, Maidaan, starring Ajay Devgn. The mid-week release only raked in £15,265 from 138 previews. The total opening weekend collections are at 50,427 from 153 locations with a poor site average of just £330.

Malayalam film Aavesham was the highest-grossing Indian title for the weekend 12th-14th April. The film had a smaller release than Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Maidaan.  The film opened in 126 locations collecting £207,308 with a high site average of £1,645. The film also had a mid-week release with £53,754 from 109 previews. 

Rhea Kapoor’s production Crew starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Tabu, and Kriti Sanon is still holding in its third weekend, collecting a healthy £51,253 from just 45 sites, with a site average of £1,139. The total collections stand at an impressive £522,947.

Other Indian films which opened during the weekend 12th-14th April include: Varshangalkku Shesham – £15,328 from 6 locations; Geethanjali Malli Vacchindi – £9,597 from 16 locations; Romeo – £8,641 from 22 locations; Jonde Roho Bhootji – £7,579 from 13 locations. 

The total gross of all Indian titles over the weekend 12-14th April stands at £561,973.
