The list of Top Films of 2023 contains Box Office data till 5th January 2024. *Animal & *Dunki are still showing in select UK cinemas.
1) – Pathaan
Shah Rukh Khan starrer Pathaan has emerged as the highest-grosser of the year and the highest-grossing Indian title of all-time at the UK Box Office with a total gross of £4.3M.
The action thriller, part of Yash Raj Films’ Spy Universe, has also broken all-time records becoming the first Indian title to cross the £3M and £4M marks at the UK Box Office. It dethroned Yash Raj Films’ Dhoom:3 which remained the highest-grosser for an Indian title here since 2013. Pathaan broke the record and reached #1 in just 10 days after its general release.
Pathaan opened at #2 on the UK Box Office chart, the second Indian film ever to peak at #2, a record first held by RRR.
The opening weekend collections of the film came in at £1.4M with the total coming to just below of £2M (with Wed, Thu previews). It collected a historical £1,967,854 over its extended five day opening weekend from 212 locations with a very high site average of £9,282. From Friday-Sunday(27th-29th Jan), the film raked in £1,415,870.
2) – Jawan
Jawan starring Shah Rukh Khan in multiple avatars released on 7th September in three language versions (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu) across the UK and Ireland in 261 locations and opened at #2 on the official UK Box Office charts. It became the second-highest grosser of the year and all-time, and second film to cross the £3M mark for an Indian title here with a total gross of £3.1M
The film collected £1,346,689 in its opening weekend with a high site average of £5,160. The weekend figures include £306,793 from 254 previews. In its third weekend Jawan took the second spot of all-time grossers overtaking Dhoom:3‘s lifetime collection of £2,710,319.
3) – Rocky aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani
Released by Moviegoers Entertainment for Viacom18 Studios, the film stars Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi. The Bollywood rom-com released in 146 locations in its opening weekend, bringing in £370,882, with a site average of £2,540.
It crossed the coveted £2M mark at the UK Box Office in its fifth weekend and closed at £2.3M. Only 12 other Indian titles at the time had crossed the mark at the UK Box Office with 3 of those films also directed by Johar; Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (Yash Raj Films – £2,213,877), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (Yash Raj Films – £2,061,251), and My Name Is Khan (20th Century Fox – £2,626,809).
4) – Animal
Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna and Tripti Dimri, and directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga opened with a bang at the UK Box Office. Despite receiving a 18 rating from the BBFC, meaning no one younger than 18 may see the film in a cinema, the film had one of the highest opening weekends for an Indian film at the UK Box Office in 2023.
Distributor AA Films released the film in three versions in UK cinemas; Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. It opened in 172 locations on 1st December 2023 with no previews, and raked in a very impressive £719,022 over the weekend 1st-3rd December, with a high site average of £4,180.
It became the fourth Indian title to cross the £2M mark in 2023, that too just in its third weekend with the total gross till the first week of 2024 at £2.3M.
5) – Tiger 3
Yash Raj Films’ Salman Khan & Katrina Kaif starrer Tiger 3 had a strange Sunday opening day on 12th November 2023. The film had limited previews on Saturday, 11th November and opened at a total of £425,668 from 271 locations over its first two days.
The film didn’t feature in the official Box Office chart for the weekend 10th-12th November, as this only includes films that open on that Friday or earlier.
In the first reporting of Box Office figures from its official first weekend, technically the second weekend from 17th-19th November, the film was reported at 168 locations with an opening gross of £1,184,001. The film closed at £1.5M.
