Sony Music India is celebrating their foray into the Indian film music market with the release of Tujhe Yaad Na Meri Ayee 2, recreated from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The film’s soundtrack was the first project Sony Music signed in India and released on 12 August 1998. The Soundtrack for the Karan Johar directorial was composed by Jatin-Lalit.
The Soundtrack of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai became a global hit and the best-selling Bollywood soundtrack of the year, with 8 million units sold in India. The title song remained on the Indian music charts for over a year. Sony Music Indonesia also sold 300,000 copies in Indonesia, for a combined 8.3 million copies sold in India and Indonesia with a global of 12 million copies.
Sony Music set up offices in India in 1997 and was primarily focused on English music but was looking to explore Hindi film music.
The full soundtrack came in second place in a poll conducted by the BBC for best Bollywood soundtracks of all time, the first place being taken by Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, an album which was also composed by Jatin–Lalit.
